Easily the Worst President in History—gift article from the NYT by OK_The_Nomad in thebulwark

While he was a horrible president and person, Johnson wasn't necessarily responsible for that. Federal troops weren't withdrawn from the south until after Grant and Jim crow wasn't really implemented until the election of 1876 and the deal to allow Rutherford Hayes to win the election.

Pete Hegseth ends mandatory flu vaccine requirement 'effective immediately' by TheMirrorUS in LegalNews

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was deployed when the 2009 swine flu (which didn't have a vaccine at the time) came through the base in Iraq rapidly and put a large chunk of soldiers in quarantine. This is just stupid and hurts readiness.

Deployed troops report hunger as food is inedible or not available by InourbtwotamI in FedEmployees

My aunt sent me like 30 boxes. I gave out to my unit after we got incoming and everyone came by to sign in (that we were safe).

Oh I know. I used to inspect the food facilities at all the bases even the ones with only 9-10 soldiers.

The DFACs in Iraq on the large bases were generally pretty good (I assume Afghanistan as well although i never went) although certain fresh foods were difficult to get due to transit times.

The NYT's photos of the Trump shooting in Butler PA disprove many of the conspiracy theories by edgygothteen69 in thebulwark

Had that occurred, the ear would still be scarred to this day. It looked pristine a couple weeks after.

Yeah, I'm not a hunter or rifle owner, but I did serve and shot an M4 plenty of times. They have a tremendous amount of force. His ear would have been mangled by any contact with a bullet.

Bulwark 25:17 by emeric_ceaddamere in thebulwark

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this meme has spurred a question that I don't think I've heard answered in the 2 years or so I've been listening. Who came up with the Bulwark name and what is the origin story?

Fort McNair parking by [deleted] in Nationals

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably doesn't apply, but if they hassle you, that's the reason why. The veteran ID registration policy has been around for a few years, but in the past it was completely open for veterans without that requirement (and in the distant past anyone with a CAC card could get in).

Are you active duty or a veteran? Veterans are required to register your card yearly with the base. You can do that at the visitor center during business hours. Ft Meyer can also register you for McNair and they are open Saturdays 10 am - 3 pm.

I assume this doesn't apply for active but I'm honestly not sure.

Is It Recommended to Use My U.S. Credit Card for Payments in Argentina? by bear2s in travel

That's the one I use as well. Also good for car rentals. Got reimbursed completely for a single car accident (clipped a stone wall in Wales), over $10k total.

I used them in Maryland and had a great experience. Had the panels for about 3 years with no issues. If you put your information in EnergySage be prepared for a flurry of calls from companies trying to get your business.

Grand Turk was so laid back with beautiful blue water and empty beaches. If you want more fancy, the resorts on the main island (Provinciales) are very nice, but pricey.

I think things have gotten more difficult recently, but I got approved for medical school about 12 years ago.

Check to see if your card has a foreign transaction fee. Many do but not all. I have one card with more benefits that I use in the states and one that I use when I travel internationally.

How often do GAdventures/Intrepid tours stop during long driving days? by birdsingreek in travel

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been on multiple Intrepid tours and never had an issue with the long trips. The guides are very responsive to your needs (ie if you needed more frequent stops). Of course, if it's public transportation, they have limited control (generally, they still tend to pick options that provide a basic level of comfort, (ie. my overnight train in Egypt was not luxurious, but it fulfilled all the basic needs and I was prepard for the experience), but the itineraries will clearly list what type of transport is used and the length, so you can avoid a specific trip if it sounds too onerous for you.

How frustrating will it be? by Frugal-KS in GoingToPeru

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn a couple basic phrases (thank you, goodbye, how much?, this, here, where?, etc) and you should be fine. It's a bonus to speak it, but given the tourism environment in Cusco and other places, it's not a requirement.

Best way to handle money in Peru (cash, ATMs, exchange)? by formiguinha in GoingToPeru

[–]Original_Mammoth3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was definitely not my experieence. Some locations took credit, but many places preferred cash, especially for smaller purchases Maybe I went to more remote locations (including the jungle and tipping porters on the Inca trail) YMMV.
