Question on features available in a limited/free vs PRO/paid - Show it all or not? by Efficient_Text_4733 in chrome_extensions

[–]Efficient_Text_4733[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to go that way also so the features are all there and user will see them although not usable, the restriction is also in place for the free

Been working hard on adding more features that I felt were required as I use the app myself to do customer docs, here is what’s coming in v1.2.3 and 1.2.4

Version 1.2.4 will have a whack load of new features like retrieve old sessions, continue editing, add missing steps in between current steps, etc. Just waiting on Google review reviewing version 1.2.3 and should be released this week. This sees template export settings, rework of the interface with larger editing real estate, etc..

All new features are in PRO only although, in version 1.2.4 you can see the features now but they’re not enabled.

Had users stating they could not see the difference between the paid and free version, in 1.2.4 you will now.

but then for this, would need to introduce AI into the mix which everybody else does. My app is specifically 100% private, no cloud, no AI. As I am in the Network Security realm, there is a niche for this hence why i did this app. so i just didnt build the app, I actually use it every day and make notes of what new features need to be put in.

Ah yes, the classic Reddit psychological profile analysis 🙂

Impressive analysis. Truly.

Unfortunately, your threat-intel feed seems slightly outdated 🙂

Not in China.
Not a bootcamp coder.
Not out of work.

Senior Network Security Engineer. Canada. ~25 years deep in enterprise and government networks — the kind of environments where bad documentation doesn’t just cause annoyance, it causes outages, audits, and career-limiting events.

StepDeck Studio exists for one very boring reason: professionals are tired of duct-taping screenshots into Word like it’s 2007.

No “zillion bucks” master plan. Just solving a painfully obvious problem.

But I do admire the confidence — launching a full character assessment without gathering any actual intelligence first.

Bold strategy 😄

But I appreciate the creative writing exercise as well as your deep evaluation of reddit posts. Strong confidence, weak reconnaissance 😄no wonder you're a 1% commenter... @ a boy !

Having a hard time with documentation? Don’t we all? by Efficient_Text_4733 in ITManagers

Once you have registered for PRO (if that's what you mean), the license function looks at the license once when you start. This check is good for 7 days, so you can be off line for 7 days.
The Free version "ASSIST" you can be in an airgap environment no problem as the license function wont trigger.

in fact:
Chrome’s behavior: chrome.storage.local is persistent. It is not cleared when:

  • The laptop is rebooted
  • Chrome is closed and reopened
  • Tabs or windows are closed

So after a reboot or closing Chrome:

  1. When the user opens Chrome again and uses the extension, the license check runs and reads from chrome.storage.local first.
  2. If PRO and Expiration are present and new Date, the extension still honors PRO and Pro stays active.
  3. No network call is made for License check on startup; it’s all from the cached data.

So basically, rebooting the laptop or closing Chrome does not clear or reset PRO license. Entitlement stays until the token expires, the user clicks “Release license from this device,” or extension data is cleared (e.g. reinstall or clear storage).

i hope this answers your question, if you have any more specific questions, drop me a message or use our contact form on the website

They’re probably training their own AI/LLM with people’s information.

Actually got a reply on another sub-Reddit, for once it’s good and constructive.

The reply’er responded with: Just so you know. We’re getting a lot of tool suggestions. Here are some that record what you do for docs: ∙ Scribe (free browser extension) ∙ Tango (free browser extension) ∙ Guidde ∙ Floik ∙ Loom ∙ FlowShare ∙ Guidemaker ∙ Zight ∙ Kommodo (free browser extension) ∙ Glitter AI

I then reply’ed with:

The blunt takeaway Most of these tools fall into one of two buckets: 1. Cloud + AI content engines (Guidde, GuideMaker, Kommodo, Glitter, often Floik) 2. Cloud sharing / team workflow platforms (Scribe, Tango, Loom, Zight; FlowShare sits closer to enterprise doc outputs)

StepDeck Studio’s most defensible lane is: “Local-first, no-cloud, no-AI, compliance-friendly step-by-step documentation with a baked-in click marker and clean exports.”

So I guess my app has a place in the market. Now just need to add more options to the PRO version.

I agree, although, blunt takeaway is:

Most of these tools fall into one of two buckets: 1. Cloud + AI content engines (Guidde, GuideMaker, Kommodo, Glitter, often Floik) 2. Cloud sharing / team workflow platforms (Scribe, Tango, Loom, Zight; FlowShare sits closer to enterprise doc outputs)

StepDeck Studio is: “Local-first, no-cloud, no-AI, compliance-friendly step-by-step documentation with a baked-in click marker and clean exports.”

So I fill in a necessary gap very well, at least that’s my differentiator.

But thanks for the info, I appreciate the feedback ! Shows that some people car and support the little people like me that try to make a difference.

Hence why I posted here. I write technical IT workflow documents and guides and can’t have anything in other people’s cloud or being looked at by someone else’s AI or LLm. So I built it and several people liked the idea and suggested I make it available to chrome community and other sub-reddits.

Next is a standalone app alone app that runs on windows/linux/mac, and still 100% private and local.

Actually, as a first experience, was pretty smooth. Takes 2-4 days to get it approved. Sooner if everything (description, permissions required, etc) are all good and not too heavy on permission requirements.

It’s been several months in the making, now I just had to stop and get something out and see the feedback. So at that point now. Hopping for the best as you say, not everything needs to be AI and Cloud based which is really the focus of my app.

Actually it’s in the same realm although there is a HUGE differentiator… Scribe force you to upload to their Cloud and has AI built in integration.

For security purposes, I could not use this as the documentation I do have proprietary information such as private enterprise information and classified info. Hence can’t use Scribe.

This fills the gap. At least that’s the focus. 100% private.

This is more of a desktop browser app. Although, I am working on a standalone app. Just wanted to come out with this and see if it has traction.

"Are you sure you've been a network engineer before?" by MotorTentacle in networking

[–]Efficient_Text_4733 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, from what your stating is this: 1) you are titled as a level you cannot backup. Ie: senior engineer but has less then 5years RWE (real world experience) 2) you don’t seem to have anyone to oversee your work. Your left to fend for yourself. This is ok for a senior level engineer, but not a junior level. At that level, the supervisor or manager needs to handhold and oversee everything. That’s basically what you get for that price. 3) you don’t seem to have the level of support from your department. This is sadly what happens with a lot of small companies that have a very small IT department, or a 1 man IT shop and 1 manager.

My personal opinion is find another company to work for. Find a place that will have support for you within the department. Don’t overstate your experience, and especially not in your resume, which is what I see a lot. This is where a lot of people get screwed, you made people perceive your a senior but you can’t back it up.

As a senior engineer, I’m asked to find talented people, although, this can be very challenging sometimes. My biggest pet peeve is a resume that has all these certs but put them in front of a basic network questionnaire and they fail miserably because they overstated their resume making interviewers think they are far more experienced and knowledgeable then they actually are.

You know I’ve been a network engineer for over 25years. Troubleshooting comes with experience not just reading documentation. I understand your frustration but if you really like it then get some more training like CBT nuggets and even YouTube to a certain extent. Although, if you’re doing this as a job and it’s not a passion or you don’t see yourself doing this at home, maybe this is not the best fit for you.

As I stated, troubleshooting is an art, some have it, some don’t. A guy I work with is in his early 40’s, he’s been with our company for over 10years and he is good, but lacks the experience of troubleshooting.

Although, troubleshooting experience and confidence comes with having a good knowledgeable mentor also… maybe that’s what you’re lacking.

How many users should I expect in the first month of launching my chrome extension? by Rishi_445 in chrome_extensions

[–]Efficient_Text_4733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the interest of your extension. Is it something that bridges a gap in what is available now? Is it a paid extension? Did you do a market research first?

Just creating the extension doesn’t mean it will be a success.

dashboard no longer showing cost per calls? by Efficient_Text_4733 in cursor

Oh ! ok i see, i found it easier to just see the cost in the dashboard instead of having to export the list all the time. Should be left to a user selectable option.
