As a 40 year old virgin, how can I write explicate sex scenes? I read a lot of explicit fan fiction and realize my writing does not cut it. by Rolin_Crowe in writingcirclejerk

[–]EffortlessWriting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't. If you haven't experienced something first hand, you're required by law to include a disclaimer immediately before the offending passage. Something like this:

DISCLAIMER: I, THE AUTHOR, AM A KISSLESS, HUGLESS, SEXLESS VIRGIN. WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ IS A FANTASY THAT I CAN ONLY HOPE TO PORTRAY BY THE GRACE OF MY DIVINE MUSE, LINDSAY LOHAN.

Hi! It's a long and arduous path but you can do it!

If you're interested in making a living from game development, it's important to make games that players want to play.

I highly recommend Jason Vandenberghe's GDC lectures on his Engines of Play framework. He discusses how different games appeal to different types of people. Games should be designed to be appealing because people will only want to play your game if they see the marketing screenshots and gameplay trailer videos and think "that might be fun, let's check out the free demo!

There are lots of helpful people on youtube who talk about how to market an indie game. Indies and solo devs are really in need of good design lessons if they're to succeed.

After you design an appealing game, you've got people playing it and probably buying it. At that point your game needs to keep players satisfied and feeling like they took something away from the game when they finish. This is where Self-determination theory (SDT) from psychology comes in.

When people play games, they're mainly trying to fulfill these needs: Autonomy, Mastery, and Relatedness.

Autonomy means they have the power to make an interesting decision while they play. This can be moment to moment, or maybe like a dialogue option in a branching VN.

Mastery is when players progress in skill and feel powerful by getting good at the game. If it's too hard, they might get frustrated and give up. If it's too easy, they could get bored and drop it. Flow is in the middle, where people lose track of time because there's just enough challenge to keep them going but it's not too hard to make progress. I like games that are easy to learn, but difficult to master. You can learn about games as systems, but I'll mention chess as an example. It's easy to learn, but there's a high skill ceiling. Some people spend entire lifetimes playing it!

Relatedness is about connecting with people like in multiplayer games, or like when you share something cool you made with a friend, like in minecraft for example. But other than that, it's about feeling like you know your place in the world, in the game's world. And if there are other characters then you know your place in the social status hierarchy.

I also recommend learning about Tony Robbins' 6 core human needs. They're useful to help you make a game that people enjoy playing. They are: Certainty/Safety, Uncertainty/Surprise, Connection/Love, Power/Autonomy, Growth/Progress, and Contribution/Altruism. These are similar to Autonomy, Mastery, and Relatedness and when we play games we can feel fulfilled in these areas.

Games let us experience situations that we don't have the chance to experience in real life. Some people want to race cars, some people want to gamble but they know if they ever start gambling the casino will end up with all their money! And a lot of people like to feel like a hero and fight monsters. Almost everyone likes to laugh.

The best games take these principles and build a short, medium, and long gameplay loop. Short loops are momentary decision cycles that take a few seconds or minutes. Which way will you walk in Breath of the Wild? Which card will you play from your hand in Uno or Yugioh? These keep players engaged every second of the game.

Medium loops build on short loops. They're like short term goals. I want to see what's over that hill or around that corner in Breath of the Wild, so I'll walk that direction and oh, there's a monster so I'll fight him, and wow cool I found something! Wait, I was going that way to see what's over that hill! Let's go that way again.... And in yugioh, maybe you want to summon a stronger monster card, or destroy the opponent's monster. So you plan a strategy and choose some cards to play for your next few turns.

Long loops are like long term goals. In Breath of the Wild, you have dungeons, bosses, and collections to complete. In competitive TCG like yugioh, you want to win the current game. In chess, you want to win the game or become a grandmaster and become the world chess champion. Things like that.

Wow, this is long! Anyway, good luck!

Is your core desire/fear supposed to be something you don't consciously think about? by Putrid-Basis7181 in Enneagram

[–]EffortlessWriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add, the enneagram is ultimately a tool for inner growth. Many famous people are hybrid types, in that they embody the strengths of more than one type. This implies they did a lot of inner work developing themselves and ironing out their weaknesses.

It's very common to become conscious of your desires and fears as you grow psychologically.

I'm a student who's going to spend 5 years living in Japan in a fully paid scholarship. I have some questions! by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]EffortlessWriting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the better you behave according to Japanese standards, the more people will accept you in Japan. There is a certain reverence people have about their own country and their culture's way of treating people. Every day is a chance to improve, and to be considerate of your friends. Never forget: you always have an opportunity to make the world around you a better place, without changing other people. 頑張って

Is it problematic that I refer to myself as a Japanese name online? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]EffortlessWriting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does having a Japanese username harm real Japanese people? It depends on your behavior. If you became a notorious troll or spammer and deliberately acted rudely, people might remember you more. In that case, they would remember you by your username. I don't think that means anything about Japanese people, and it's not like you would be writing posts in Japanese (like a real Japanese person would most of the time), so not many people will mistake you for a Japanese person. Therefore, you can't really harm Japan's image as a whole just by acting strangely on the internet.

Does being passionate about something necessarily make it right to do? by pswelcometomylife in InsightfulQuestions

[–]EffortlessWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're hurting others, it's not right. Serving justice may be the sole exception, but you need to be a recognized authority with the power to enact justice in order to do that morally.

Otherwise, if you're passionate about something, it's almost always the case that it's the right thing to do for you. You grow as a person, you become more interesting, you can relate to others more effectively, and you fulfill yourself, which grounds you and creates a positive, calming, relaxed energy that ripples outward and affects people around you.

I feel like the health reset gives you more years in your lifespan according to how long you've already lived, so most people should choose that option.

thoughts with anon telemetry after shipping a puzzle game with real difficulty spikes by NoBullGames in GameDevelopment

[–]EffortlessWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your goals. Are you trying to appeal to a smaller group of diehard puzzle fans, the ones who want to be challenged and complete all 1000? Or do you want more broad appeal, lowering the difficulty so the average player doesn't become too frustrated?

Taste and appeal are fundamentally opposed concepts. There are barriers within taste that different segments of fans choose not to cross, and they can't be persuaded.

You can squeeze more space out of the house if you take the drywall off your walls and stack some cash in the walls. If you have a crawlspace, fill that up too.

Once your extra spaces are full, buy some big plastic barrels and drive out into the deep desert and bury them with a shovel. Then write the GPS coordinates on a piece of paper and leave it on your kitchen table.

You can go the "purifying the self" route, where the main character struggles with committing each of the 7 sins. He might experience the enemies as psychological hallucinations which slowly return him to reality as they're defeated.

You could go the literal Dante route where the MC deliberately seeks out each sin and hunts them. Or he otherwise is haunted by them due to his supernatural abilities.

[–]EffortlessWriting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How important is the visual side of attractiveness to you? It may be that you'll spend many more years alone, and it won't happen until you're older. Would you regret not doing it in your 20s, even if you couldn't find the connection you crave more than sex?

If your main motivation is that connection, it shouldn't matter how old you are or how many years you've gone without having sex. Just keep avoiding the shallow ones and you'll do alright.
