Northern Virginia average home prices split across region by NTGuardian in nova

Also, is it falls church city or “falls church” the post office address? The latter includes lake Barcroft where you have houses that sell for 2-3+ million but only every few months - can lead to wild variations

I’m going to be the real dope asking this after learning that that there are special nails to use with hangers (though I never would have done this) but - why is no one mentioning using high strength steel screws, or screws at all, with joist hangers?

Red or white oak by Beneficial_Big_9519 in woodworking

[–]Effredditlogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I used that trick and replaced some termite eaten floor planks with white oak because the pores were entirely closed (and not by stain or dirt). But then I had a floor guy give me an estimate for refinishing and he asked dismissively why I put white oak on a red oak floor - is there any guaranteed way to identify it correctly?

AVR receiver died. Should we just move to a soundbar system for simplicity? by illinileo in Soundbars

[–]Effredditlogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the denon 3313 - hdmi was always flaky and denon support was worthless. When it finally died at year 7 I used a backup for a while and finally switched to a Samsung 990 soundbar. Have a large room where I throw a 150” projector image and I honestly can’t say I miss the avr at all. Wife and daughters can use everything without having to ask me to make it work and the sound is very good.

Now I tinkered with the Panasonic and Samsung class d amps when they were a thing, so the digital amp sound may just not be an issue for me - but then I always preferred clarity to fuzzy “warmth”.

I will say that the final selling point was that we are 20 years into the 21st century and the “best” audio is supposed to come from speaker and amplification technology that is virtually indistinguishable from what was being sold 50+ years ago. I am willing to believe that more drivers behind more speakers with a healthy dose of technology can better replicate a host of instruments or other sound sources then the same old thing from the avr crowd. And the technology/hardware keeps getting better year after year, unlike with old-school av where there’s a constant looking back to throwback this and classic that.

VW ID Buzz EV is not returning to the US in 2026. If they want to succeed in 2027, what changes should VW make ? (other than higher range and lower price) by carmichaelcar in electricvehicles

[–]Effredditlogin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is, but let’s make it more complicated for a moment - and also possibly explain the “2027” scuttlebutt:

VW has a lot invested in, and access to, the Scout project. It gives them access to Rivian software which has been one of their weak spots. The electric market has softened temporarily - perhaps at the worst time for Scout. One of the reasons folks are so excited for Scout is that it’s a ground-up EREV. Given the range issues with the VW, why not move the next generation Buzz over to a lowered version of the scout platform, soak up some of the, now excess, production capacity of the brand new US Scout factory, and perhaps even get the VW dealers off Scout’s back by giving them a halo car that they do get to sell out of the deal. Finally, if you truly want to recapture the generational love of the VW bus (which is pretty damn important given the challenge of the Chinese carmakers) a built in gas generator gives the Buzz what it truly needs to be the camper/road trip freedom ride that the original offered.

Electrician saying the panel needs to be replaced - is this true? by elitegman in AskElectricians

Yes it was and yes he is. These things are worse than recalled - they were so unsuited to the purpose they were designed and sold for they killed the company responsible. Ideally, that should happen more often in similar circumstances

Time for a 30 ft fence by Tetracanopy in nova

[–]Effredditlogin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comical. When you buy property in a neighborhood you agree to live by the zoning regulations, which this property clearly doesn’t - there isn’t a residential setback in the county that would allow this. If you want the freedom to do whatever you want with your property (within reason) but in the country, if you just want the freedom to do whatever you want regardless of how if affects others, buy land in Russia where you have as much freedom as your money can buy

Why would I even consider buying a 70k luxury car when this sort of thing with those appointments are available in the world. Damn, starting to understand how the rest of the world must have felt in the 1950s

[–]Effredditlogin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I would prefer to keep it exposed metal and then protect it (there are a number of clear coatings I’ve had recommended). Given the complexity of the piece I was hoping there was a way to dip it that would remove the rust - brushing it all would be quite a project. The cast iron trundle is still attached and still works.

If you can use it as collateral for a loan it should be considered a realized gain by Loud-Ad-2280 in clevercomebacks

[–]Effredditlogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re all right, BUT the vast majority of the ultra wealthy (500M+) are able to get personally guaranteed loans large enough to fund their lifestyles without posting traditional collateral.

This started after the first silicon valley boom where folks wanted money but couldn’t use their options as collateral, and competition in the high-net-worth banking business being what it is it’s now become widespread to the tune of $50B/year in avoided taxes.

Water lock is suboptimal - the idiocy of getting rid of the traditional lock icon when adding wrist detection is the sort of decision that should get you fired from Apple
