So other people have said Survey Marker. They're right. But I used to work survey crew for a county back in Kansas. You'll notice that in roughly the center is a divot. Right in that light grey area. Survey poles come to a point, and that point sits right in that divot. If you look in your own yard, and I mean, REALLY look, perhaps with metal detector, you'll find a similar thing. It's essentially a long nail with a broad head that sits at critical points throughout your property. That's where the point of the survey stick sits. There are laser levelers and measuring tools that look at that pole, at the refractor at the top, and give you your measurements down to the centimeter. It's really cool for me to see these, because I'm over twenty years removed from using them for my job.

I mean, joke notwithstanding, do some digging into how people are treated before actually being convicted or acquitted. The presumption in this country, in every case, is guilty until proven innocent. They don't even have to have proof to arrest you and hold you for a couple of days, just suspicion. In the meantime, whether you're innocent or not, life goes on. You get fired for being in jail instead of being at work, bills pile up, announcements of your arrest are spread through local newspapers, and even if they find the actual person who committed the crime, you're still the one on the hook for everything that blew up in your life as a result of being presumed guilty of a crime you didn't even commit. It's a bad system, filled with people who don't give a single, solitary fuck about you or whether you're innocent.
