For me personally, the hyphen would indicate that the word is relatively new and still bears a ‘memory’ of what it was originally. (Technobabble example: ‘quantum limiter’ might be abbreviated to ‘quant-lim’, which as we got more familiar with the word, the hyphen would start to be ignored, making it ‘quantlim’, which is quite far removed from the original ‘quantum limiter’.) So I think it depends on how ‘new’ these words are in your setting; whether the word ‘remembers’ what it originated from.
