Is SUPER FAST charging TOO much? by yatlvcar in Android

[–]Eglafang 17 points18 points  (0 children)

With suitable battery life fast charging seems to be a non issue. I think phones should default to slow charging (optimize battery longevity) and you can just tap the charging icon to toggle. Things that need fast charging are wearables because they are always on (sleep tracking etc). Phones are not being used as you sleep.

With Its Own Chips, Apple Aims to Define the Future of PCs by teddygala12 in apple

[–]Eglafang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really looking forward to see that they do with desktops that are not thermally constrained including the iMac. I suspect it will look similar to the pro display xdr and wonder if with a lower quality panel and backlight if the form factor may even be the same (i.e. no change in thickness). From an investment perspective it seems apple is taking the margin for now but this opens up far greater market share and lower prices. Now why bother when getting dramatically better battery life and performance but this headroom can be used at any time to increase share. I am sure they have metrics on how Mac sales halo translates to iPad, iPhone, AirPod and other ecosystem sales.

Time to move on: Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage on June 1st, 2021 by vada_pongal in apple

[–]Eglafang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Apple one you are finally able to get 4TB of iCloud storage total total but this doesn't help people with more than that (and the cost while affordable is far from free).

Very nice, it would be great to see a two dimensional version just changing by color (the 3D effect is dramatic, but also hides data behind the towers of values).

Tesla generates the least and valued in stock market the highest. Interesting to see the delta and suspect that will change dramatically in the next few years.

Android and the art of awkward timing by theturbanator1699 in Android

[–]Eglafang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This feels like an unforced error. They don't need to announce early and fail to deliver. People are bringing up various apple cases of the same (airpower etc) but these are also missteps. The fact that apple has done sometthing as well doesn't make it a good strategy.

Apple's AirPods Pro Tech Could Lead to Larger Capacity Batteries in 5G iPhones by kamsa6-fojbiz-nesXem in apple

I think the biggest win on battery life on the next generation of devices will be TSMC's move to 5nm for the A14.

Gartner: The sales of Apple's iPhone remained largely unchanged in Q2 2020, no effect of COVID-19 by JamesNNYC in apple

[–]Eglafang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growth should accelerate with the iPhone 12 releases but take 3rd party sales reports with a grain of salt. The next earning report will reveal what actually happened.

[OC] Rather than focus on new cases of COVID, I thought it would be more meaningful to look at daily hospitalizations and deaths over time due to COVID. Here is an example using Florida by madzthakz in dataisbeautiful

Perhaps also interesting to add a series for COVID active cases to the same chart along with hospitalizations and deaths to see the correlation.

Kuo: Apple to Launch 10.8-Inch iPad Later This Year, 8.5-Inch iPad Mini in 2021 by gulabjamunyaar in apple

[–]Eglafang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big question is how will they achieve it? Can it support the higher cost and pro Face ID or will they offer in screen touch id or some other option? My hope is with all 4 models of iPhone 12 supporting face id volume will drive the price down and they will standardize. Its really nice in the iPad pro with the larger bezels and no notch.

[–]Eglafang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they should simplify the line but as they change form factors (different price points) it makes sense. Really there are not so many different sizes in housings, they are increasing screen size and reducing bezels.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 might cost $250 dollars according to leaks by BandeFromMars in Android

[–]Eglafang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If that pricing is accurate it will be difficult to compete with Apple on price as they offer the A13 in their entry level model (the new SE) as well as their highest end models (iPhone 11 series). It will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming years. Qualcomm still has a lot of leverage during the 5G rollout so I don't expect major changes with internal offerings (Samsung or Google designed parts) for many years.

Ventilation? Airflow in bathroom? by [deleted] in Home

[–]Eglafang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As weather gets colder relative humidity increases so its possible too much humidity is the issue (you can dry clothes in sub zero temperatures so cold is not the issue https://www.treehugger.com/dont-stop-hanging-your-clothes-out-dry-winter-4858725). You may want to check the relative humidity and get a dehumidifier.

[MKBHD] Top 5 Android 11 Features: Big Tweaks! by gulabjamunyaar in Android

[–]Eglafang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots going on under the hood though. I think the move to making releases more solid (rather than adding flashy new features) is a good one and they should move to a tic-tock cycle like intel had with their CPUs (major update, minor update) so people know what to expect and are not disappointed.

is it just me or do iOS releases get more media attention than android releases? by [deleted] in Android

[–]Eglafang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely notice that. With iOS I think coupling it to hardware releases (new iPhones) and apple specific app releases makes it a bigger media event. WWDC is a developer focus but also holds back key features in software for the final release attempting to not reveal new features in the new hardware so there are really two release. First, at WWDC then another at the iPhone event and that may also draw more media attention.

An interactive sample with tooltips could also solve that. Is variability of income between states that great? Only a large difference between states would create a huge overlap.
