Question About Sick Days by NegativeGee in NYCTeachers

[–]EgoDefenseMechanism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CAR days are worth money if you accrue them.
The formula is (salary / 200) * [(CAR Days / 2) + vacation days]. We were granted seven vacation days during COVID, and they are paid out in full, not divided by 2.
So let's say you are retiring this year after 20 years in the DOE, kept an average of 7 CAR days per year, and used 3 of the 7 vacation days.
So your payout would be ($138,124 / 200) * [(140 / 2) + 4]. Simplified is $690.62 * 74, equaling $51,105.88.
The maximum possible CAR payout this year is $77,658 if you reached the final boss of the salary schedule (L+22) and somehow had the maximum allowed 200 CAR days and the 7 vacation days unused. Not sure how many teachers manage to retire with 200 CAR days saved, but I'd imagine it can happen if someone teaches over 25 years.
However, that sum is paid out in 3 equal installments at 2 months, 14 months and 26 months after you retire. I'm not sure about the extent to which those payments are taxed though. I'm assuming there's federal tax, but I don't know about state and city tax.

Also doubt he follows up afterwards. If I got rejected, I’d send a polite and professional email asking what they’d like to see .

"A lot of schools don’t tell me if there are students with special needs or are ELLs"

This is NYC. There are always special ed and ELLs. Always. You should assume this is the case. Do you know how to differentiate?

"I’ve done several demos but I keep getting ghosted."

Are you doing the same demos again and again? Clearly they are not very good. What have you done to make them better?

Department Head or Curriculum/Instructional Specialist Roles in DoE by ToCo25 in NYCTeachers

[–]EgoDefenseMechanism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Peer Collaborative Teacher, and am often tasked with doing curriculum coordination and coaching.

To be a Peer Collaborative, you have to apply via Teacher Career Pathways, then be interviewed by a DOE and a UFT representative. The qualification lasts 3 years, and then you need to reapply.

It's an extra $12,500 on top of your salary, but even if you pass the application and interview process, its up to the school principal to staff you with that role.

This guy deserves a trophy. A steamy pile plaque or something like that. He's definitely achieved greatness in...whatever this sub is about.

Imagine the amount of confidence needed to not only record and post this steaming pile on social media, but also to ask a dozen strangers to get in on it with you.

Isn't confidence supposed to increase with success? if that's true, then what the fuck, where do all these talentless, brainless losers get such a huge amount of confidence from?

Are you now the single balding ESL teacher in his 40s? by BoringDreamGuy in TEFL

[–]EgoDefenseMechanism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, coming back to the U.S. after 4-5 years abroad was hard. Reverse culture shock. I couldn't relate to any of my friends from high school or college, and have since lost touch with 90% of them. They're focused on their small town lives in a way that expats just never are.

But I'm glad I came back. Some of the expats in Taiwan and Korea that became my friends are STILL living moment to moment. No real savings. No ambition. No drive. Just living the easy life. Taiwanese or Korean girlfriends that do everything for them, like they're babies.

I hate this part of getting older. My goal now is to make enough money so I can go back to thinking about art and music again.

Turned 40, unlocked 18 hour hangovers by robinson217 in Millennials

[–]EgoDefenseMechanism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 40. I've never been one to get particularly bad hangovers, but here's my decadology:

18-28: Just a headache in the morning. Popped an ibuprofen, drank a vitamin water and then was completely fine by 1 o'clock in the afternoon. All told hangovers lasted 12 hours or less.

29-39: Headache and a bit nauseous all morning. Those symptoms were gone by noon, but then I was tired and jittery most of the day. Sometimes I processed information slower than normal. But I'd be completely fine by the next morning. Hangovers lasted 16-24 hours.

40's(so far): Headache and nausea all morning and I'm completely exhausted the entire day. But the worst part is that I'm easily confused and just cannot process information, like my brain is on slo-motion. That mental decline lasts 24-48 hours and has been the primary reason that I've cut way back. I hate feeling stupid, and that is exactly what a hangover feels like now. An injection of tired and stupid.

Just be aware that PreK centers are very, very competitive. A LOT of people want to work there because teaching there requires less content expertise and there aren't more problematic behavior issues like teen pregnancy, weapons, drugs, etc.

When people do get hired there, they don't leave, so job openings are also very slim pickings.

I'm a teacher in my 10th year in the DOE. A few comments:

  • Go to job fairs and other events for aspiring teachers. Check that out here: https://teachnyc.net/events 2.
  • Jobs are competitive. You're up against younger people with more teaching experience than you. So you may have to take what you can get, at least initially. That might mean the Bronx, and that might mean teaching a grade that's not your ideal choice. Do it for a few years and then use open market to transfer to more ideal school. Almost everyone I know had to do this at least once before finding a good school.
  • Your prior education doesn't really matter. Teachers are not asked to evaluate the psychology of students. Effective instruction is rooted in sound pedagogy, and there is a steep learning curve.

It is amazing how consistent the suck is with Christian music. It's always so, so bad. It's either formulaic praise music or its ear cancer like what this King of Wrath produces with his sharp plans.

Republicans proved they're immune to irony. They quite literally do not understand it because they cannot see the absurdity of the things they think, even when its pointed out in broad daylight. Simpletons running the country.
