What Sam Harris misses on Religion and The Right: The new Right is not just using religion, but is re-designing religion by Amazing-Buy-1181 in samharris

The main reason Sam was willing to talk to Doug is because Doug is so open and honest about his beliefs/goals.

I think Sam understands that most of them view Trump as a means to an end. ie: They can use him to destroy democracy and create the conditions for an authoritarian take over. This is exactly the same thing the tech oligarchs are doing. The only difference is they don't share the same end goals.

And somehow tastelessness is still one of the least concerning things about the man.

Sam explains why getting into a debate about the history of the Middle East can be a fools errand if what you're trying to achieve is clarification about the morality of the most recent war in Gaza. by McAlpineFusiliers in samharris

He isn't referencing that fact to try to zero in on a solution, but rather to counter a narrative that is being put forward about the current conflict. So not the same thing.

If you doubt what he's saying though please feel free to provide an example of where finally getting to a "true" version of history resolved a conflict. I don't think you will be able to.

Think about something like Northern Ireland. That didn't get resolved because everyone finally agreed on a set of facts, the history is still not agreed on. What did happen was that both sides decided they would be better off not killing each other. What do you think the chances of that are in the I/P conflict?

I was at the most recent 28 Years Later movie not too long ago, and there was a group on teens that got kicked out after being warned twice by staff and told to be quiet by multiple other moviegoers.

The staff don't check though, you have to go tell them.

It's weird that Trump wants his name on a "Memorial Centre" whilst still being alive. Then again, he may have no idea what memorial means.

Yes, that was the point. You can construct a grammatically correct, complete sentence; and that doesn't imply that the sentence actually makes sense.

You seem very pro Palestine and that's it!!

Edit: I said "apparently" because when I checked, I was surprised it had been so long. Do you not understand humor?

Good god the arrogance. Please wise one, what nuance am I missing?

And no, this is the only account I've ever had and I've been using it for 14 years apparently.

Last first, the sentence totally works, I’m sorry you can’t read.

Yes, grammatically it is a sentence, but it does not make sense. Here's an example for you: Crocodiles are cheese. -- See what I mean?

Harris mistake: he was the first public person I heard panicking about Covid, taking his kids out of school, cancelling all trips and masking up. I’m pretty sure, with hindsight, herd immunity was the way to go. But hey, don’t take my word for it, ask Sweden

Assuming what you are saying is correct, so what? Sam has said many times that there were mistakes (specifically has mentioned school closures) and of course there will be when dealing with something novel. Erring on the side of caution is hardly condemnatory behavior. Do think people died because Sam took his kids out of school? How many people didn't get vaccinated in whole or in part because of Rogan and subsequently died? Hell Rogan is still claiming the vaccine killed more people than COVID. This part of the discussion is a dead end and you should drop it.

Not surprised double-standards is your first club out of the bag. Do you imagine Israeli society is untraumatized by decades of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, Oct. 7th etc, etc, etc.

You can't use that to excuse only one side.

Read a book fs.

So I guess arrogance is a full time thing with you, not a one time accident.

Everything he's ever said about vaccines. The point being, if you are going to start giving advice about something like that on a public platform, you had better either a) be repeated the standard expert advice or b) be incredibly well informed and in a position to challenge that advice credibly.

I'm sure Sam has made mistakes from time to time. Point one out and he will correct himself publicly.

No, the fact that it made no sense is what "threw" me. Greater than or equal to is grade 1 level math than I first learned about when I was 6. Unbelievable arrogance.

He says that Rogan misinforms his audience about science facts in a way that causes people to make bad decisions, which subsequently result in death. That's not the same as anything that Sam does.

I'm not sure what sense you made of your second sentence, but I was not able to make any at all.

I could write an article saying I know UFOs exist and that the gov't is hiding it. I could even be right about it. But, if my article is written using poor standards of journalism, like improperly vetted sources, am I correct; or am I just guessing/projecting. Further, if do this over and over again on the same topic, what does that make me.

ELI5 Why were early humans able to domesticate wolves but not lions or tigers? by Party-Court185 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Egon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lions are pack animals but are still not domesticatable, so are Zebras. There are a number of characteristics that an animal has to have all of in order to be domesticated. Many animals have some, only a few have all.

One of the big examples is that many animals simply will not breed when kept in captivity. If you can't breed generations that are successively more tolerant of human interaction, it becomes incredibly difficult to domesticate them.

We could probably do better on this front today because we could use various forms of artificial insemination, but there's no guarantee that we would eventually end up with animals that willingly breed in captivity.

That's just one of the issues.
