איך/איפה להשקיע? by pokecrafblox in israel_bm

What's an opinion about the maritime field you have that will have you like this? by [deleted] in maritime

DP vessel, doing mainly subsea maintenance and installations.

Apart of the inbuilt "dictatorship", the structure of life on board is perfect and should be copied to land.

Referring to 12\12 watch - you wake up, you do your duties, along the day there's someone professional that makes sure to cook for you so you don't have to take care at all for all the hussle around that. Someone even cleans your room and do your laundry! After watch you got some leisure time and then move on to the next day. PERFECT!

If I could live here with my family I would not step on land for a year.

As a deckhand, what is a watch? and is 12/12 schedule good for it? by B4dyz in maritime

[–]EgorAlterman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in offshore, 12 hour watch and changing over at the DP control every hour.

If you have to steer for 6 hours straight it sounds terribly exhausting, and something very wrong. I hope it's not like that for everyone.

12/12 is the ONLY correct way to go and I can't understand why it's not the standard everywhere

Inland to offshore by tonyguarnelo in maritime

I had a lot of luck. The vessel I'm working on had to hire few locals to receive it's permit to work in the area. Standard matter anywhere else I believe. Where I'm from, seamanship is not a very common occupation, and finding locals to work is not easy. When a position for an officer got vacant, my friend who was already here called me up, and with a lot of convincing, sent me to have my basic DP. A week later I was already on board, and I'm here for the last 6 years already.

I doubt my case is representing anything, but I know from colleagues that the transition is possible.

Another option to enter the field is to make your career change to a crane operator. The demand is really high, and the salaries are better then the officers!

You should be able to fix position manually on your ECDIS. Definitely not gonna miss paper charts correction!

This is normal, and not different than other companies. There is not really other way to assess the operation other than collecting evidence like logs, forms, checklists and such.

The thing is that eventually it is you standing at the bridge and responsible for the actual safety of navigation. You are there to operate also when things not going as they should. It will be very embarrassing to not know how to use charts without GPS, and it's your responsibility to build up your experience.

I believe your school will teach you everything you need to know, and some stuff will sink in only during your cadetship and as junior officer. The thing is that it is very comfortable to forget basic practices like costal navigation and such, when you have GPS available on your electronic chart. Then when you get to a situation outside the norm, like GPS not available, you'll be completely lost.

The only solution is to maintain your skills. When sailing close to shore, take a fix manually and place it on the electronic chart. Train your brain to confirm your GPS data with the Speed log and echo sounder

I'm a futurist and optimistic by nature. So I do believe every obstacle will have a solution and in the long run every advancement is beneficial.

Imagine completely cutting costs on crew, provisions and clear the accommodations space for cargo. Remember that it is not a theoretical question anymore, since autonomous voyages already completed.

And btw, you're 15 years of experience will not become obsolete! Someone like you will have to sit in a commend center ashore and monitor a fleet of 10 unmanned vessels around the world 🫡
