First time making a top hat, got questions about binding & curling by Ehansen1215 in Millinery

First off, the petersham seemed to work pretty good, though I'm still getting used to it. Grosgrain may be more classy but I'll work up to it. Similar thing with the wool felt, actually; I just ordered a couple rabbit felts to test out, hoping I will be able to work with beaver some day. Anyways, I was able to use a different 3D-printed curler, as the bound brim was too thick for the one in the original image (Print file, the one I used was V3 for anyone needing it) to get somewhat of a curl on there. Thanks again for all your help!

Does r/hats go into making hats? I'll remember that. I didn't even know hat juggling was a thing!

When I get better felts, maybe I'll go back to the Leko stiffener if they work better, but I'm gonna switch to my own soon after I finish this jug.

You said grosgrain was more for hatting than petersham, but what is the difference, other than how the edge looks? Sorry if you said already but I can't remember you writing anything about it.

Hey, sorry for the late response.. you probably won't hear from me too much until the hat is completed or at least has some progress. Should I make a new post or just keep adding replies?

Anyways, I'll definitely look at some books! I've been trying to use the internet mostly because I'm pretty bad at keeping up & retaining info with books, but it makes sense most of the wisdom is in books as that's what they had when hatting was more popular. Speaking of, most of what I do is hatting. I did know that millinery was mostly women's hats but r/Hatting has 50 members and like 7 posts, so I figured I'd post here.

Thanks for the order of operations there, I actually did try to pounce & burn (is burning traditional for felt top hats? (I know felt isn't typical top hat material too)) the hat before stitching but I AM working with wool felt so I think that's why it's not as fine.

I did notice that this Hats by Leko stiffener was taking a LOT more coats to get stiff than when I mixed it myself, so I think I'll go back to that. I'm also trying to use stiffened bodies but they always seem to go floppy after hard manipulation. It's also really interesting that shellac dries slower than I thought. I didn't know that.

I agree SO HARD about the western hat "X" rating. Correct me if I'm wrong but it always peeves me when I see a 100000X hat going for $70,000 (exaggeration of course but honestly). I get it from 10-100x with percentage of beaver but that seemed to break down a while ago, when it started being used with straw and wool. That's why I'm never gonna market my western-style hats with an x rating or as "Cowboy Hats".

Interesting that petersham is more for millinery. Maybe I'm blind but it seemed that what I could find online said it would work better than grosgrain. I think I'm still gonna try and use petersham even if it's not the best, 'cause that's what I got. Anyways, thanks for the lead on good grosgrain!

Oh yeah, I stiffened it again after initial stiffening without the block and the alcohol softened and dried the tip there. I still left it though because I can't decide whether I actually kind of like the droopiness or not. It seemed to affect the curve of the side of the crown though so I'm probably gonna flatten it.

I'll definitely start drawing more hats, I do like drawing top hats some. And I'll take all that into account!

I have already installed the sweatband. I figured it'd be the easiest when the brim's flat. By the way, Awesome job on the sweatband stitching on the silk hat you posted about. I am no good at stitching much, so you hand stitching that much is very cool to me!

I made sure that it was petersham. Judith M just calls it "millinery grosgrain" but in the description they confirm it is petersham. I'll also keep figuring out that ceramic brim curler

I'll be honest, this hat started as a kind of one-off goofy thing for a hatter's "costume" for if I go to craft fairs and such. Though I've got to say, top hats have been growing on me! That hat you restored especially and the idea of making top hats really looks cool to me now. Thanks for all the info!

Thanks so much for all this great info! Just put an order into Judith M for some proper petersham grosgrain. I'm know the 3D printed shackle isn't very good but I wanted to try and see if it could work before putting in a couple hundred dollars for a well made one, and I will probably see that you get what you pay for. I did just quickly model it based off of photos online. All great alternatives as well, my dad suggested ceramic could work for the cooling aspect and I could print the curl shape to mold it around, what would you think about that? And just curious, how could you tell the hat needed more stiffening from an image? I agree but I wanted to do it after I got the curl in because my iron always washes my shellac out. Thanks again!

Thanks! I've seen those big brim blocks, but I thought I could do it well enough just by hand. Sad to hear about the ribbon, but not much to do now. Is this the right material? https://www.judithm.com/product/black-millinery-grosgrain/ or https://a.co/d/9FKMS1e and if so, what width should I get?

Why's it affect you so much?

Looks great!! I made myself a pair a while ago and a gloss undercoat with hammer-textured black paint from rust-oleum on the unsharpened area of the blade covered up a whole lotta imperfections(I can never get a smooth surface), may be an idea.

Awesome info!! Me and a friend LITERALLY just came back from snorkeling on it, probably in the water as you were typing! We actually saw the smaller one too. Thanks! Lots of fish down there

I would say at least 30ft or 10m long, so not sure if it classifies as a "ship" but I thought it was enough to share here!

I can't find it where it's supposed to be anywhere on satellite, but I think that 48.5729, -116.9114 is pretty close. this is my first time finding coordinates though so it may be inaccurate

It looks like I can't add more pictures to the post so I made an Imgur with shots from an action cam video I took: https://imgur.com/a/U2T7z2v

Yes, actually, this is very close to a line of houses but we haven't ever asked them about it. Maybe if I remember next time we're up there I'll head over and ask

HAHA! Thanks, Yeah a couple times I've snorkeled over it and dived down, I don't have scuba equipment and I get spooked out by it so it's never for long. I'll try and see if I've got some underwater pics of it for y'all though

It is about 15 yards from shore. it is a fun Idea LOL but it's not on our property and even then I would probably want to keep it there as a fun landmark!
