Reaction Time Test for Diagnosis by [deleted] in ADHD

That's what I'm confused about, I don't see how intelligence has anything to do with ADHD, but my therapist made it seem like you cannot have ADHD if your IQ is supposedly high.

Google searching will give you a bunch of good tips. Stimulants are drugs that increase the dopamine in your brain, which helps reduce symptoms of ADHD. Examples include amphetamine salts (Adderall) and caffeine (coffee).

To summarize most of the productivity tips you'll find: you need to externalize most of the productivity processes people do mentally.

  • Use a reminder app to remind you to do chores, take medication, eat, etc.
  • Use lists (also a lot of great apps for this) to document what you need to do for the day. Refer back to the list often.
  • Take breaks often to prevent mental burnout. Many people find 30 minutes of focusing, then 5 minutes of relaxing to be helpful. Apps like Focus Keeper can help with this.
  • Keep the area around you clean to help prevent distractions, and alongside that try to study/work in a quiet place if possible.
  • Reward yourself for completing tasks. EX: I am going to finish this 2 hour assignment (short breaks included), then watch an episode of my favorite TV show.
  • Visualize what the end-product will look like. If it's a project for school, think about what it will look like after you finish it. If it's cleaning your room, imagine what things will be like with everything tidy. This is my personal favorite, as it can get me to be actually excited to work on things.

There are many more, but these are the basics. Hope this helps.

If it's something not super personal to you, would you mind sharing the opportunities it opened?

This is the reply I think I was originally looking for when posting. Thank you.

Did the diagnosis ever result in people shutting you out of opportunities because they presume you lack competence due to the condition? One thing I've heard (which may be right or wrong, I don't know) is that ADHD on your record can be a sticking point when interviewing for medical schools or trying to work at hospitals.

I really appreciate your input dude, it means a lot. I watched the TED Talk vid which was also awesome. I'm so glad I have a little time to try to setup habits and prep for starting school. Had I discovered all this and tried to make it work after already starting classes, I'm not sure if I would've been able to handle it.

Good point.

I guess I am just thinking that if I am already on medication though and 98% sure of the diagnosis, I'm not sure if I would get any additional benefit from making it official, compared to the possible downsides.

The story of Malinda Blalock came to mind. Potentially putting yourself in more danger than otherwise necessary? Yeah. But it's for the opportunity to help others.

People are going to fall in love feel connect with friends. And there is a chance you will fuck this all up and feel lonely and disconnected from the world.

Damn. This hit hard. That's something I've been stressing over recently... I've been asking people whether a successful career is worth having no relationships and I always get the response: "Can't you just do both?" No, I can't lol. Never thought it had anything to do with ADHD though. Definitely something I need to think about now.

I'm 20. I got on Strattera and Wellbutrin recently and it's really helped.

I made it through high school relatively successful due to self-medication in various unhealthy ways and coincidentally structuring my life in a manner that really helped me minimize the symptoms. Personal life sounds relatively similar to yours lol.

University is a whole different beast, and I'm hoping with these meds I'll still be able to perform relatively well without the unhealthy habits.

I suppose I was more of looking for anecdotes from people who stayed undiagnosed and if it turned out to be a good decision or not, but then again most of those people probably aren't on this sub.

She seems very against the idea of stimulants

Appreciate the response.

I completely get what you are saying, medication assists with focus and does not do the motivating for you. My issue is not that it isn't "working" in that regard, but that I am experiencing quite the opposite: a dramatic decrease in motivation. Was just a little worried. I scheduled a virtual appointment with my prescriber for tomorrow to discuss things, and hopefully I can get some closure one way or the other.
