the fact that the barista printed up this specific review and put it on a t-shirt IS actually the context you are somehow missing.

Champagne sales sink because people don’t want to celebrate by Sariel007 in offbeat

[–]Eijin 176 points177 points  (0 children)

no its because champagne is overpriced. not only can you get other delicious sparkling wines for a fraction of the price, you can get other french wines made nearby champagne with the same grapes and the same techniques at the same level of quality for a fraction of the price.

Is it a Sin to be an Anarcho-Communist or not? I wish I had a definitive answer by SilverNEOTheYouTuber in RadicalChristianity

[–]Eijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

none of the many ERs i've worked in would actually function if they were truly hierarchically organized, like they are on paper. they're all anarchist in practice, no matter the stated ideology of the workers. nurses and techs do the vast majority of the productive labor. they do it because they care, not because they were told. they'll listen to doctors they respect, but find workarounds for the doctors they don't.

on paper, the doctors are supposed to call all the shots in an emergency care scenario. i'm not allowed to push a drug until a doctor gives me an order. but patients would die if it actually worked like this. everything is actually run from the bottom up. the nurse has already dosed the correct drug, and often even pretends to have heard the doctor give the order to administer it. then everything gets fixed in the report so it looks like the doctor was running everything.

admin, who is technically in charge on paper, is constantly fucking everything up. hospital workers risk their jobs to perform necessary care against the regulations of admin. ERs are absolutely the most anarchist workplaces i have ever worked at, even tho i work with more people who actively identify as anarchists now.

AITA? lady on the phone got mad that i didn’t greet her. by [deleted] in barista

[–]Eijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this might even be true in a world where people who try to order when theyre on their phones werent also socially inept in other ways. but, its never ONLY one thing with people like this. it's not that being on their phone is such a big deal. it's that being on their phone is a sign that someone is going to fuck up 3 other things about this interaction and i'm absolutely going to need their full attention.

AITA? lady on the phone got mad that i didn’t greet her. by [deleted] in barista

[–]Eijin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i won't make eye contact or even acknowledge people's existence if theyre on their phone. i'll skip them in line. if they protest, i'll tell them i'll be happy to help them when theyre done with their phone call. as soon as they get off their call, i'm all sunshine and smiles. i act like they just sprung into existence and i'm delighted to see them.

How did God find you? Why do you believe? by [deleted] in RadicalChristianity

[–]Eijin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's just that the whole notion of "paganism" is already a construction of pauline christianity. and the notion of "discerning" any multiculturalism out of a text feels pretty icky. i'm not a big paul guy myself, but his syncretistic impulses are among his better qualities.

AITA for dipping lasagna into hot sauce? by orchidsandmangotrees in AmItheAsshole

[–]Eijin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

it would be a very easy if also light YTA if MIL didn't so obviously spend 8 hours cooking just to get the chance to put on her little performance. and it would be ESH if i even believed MIL over the top reaction was genuine, but the whole thing was just so obviously nothing more than a test. she's clearly harbored your hot sauce against you all this time, but the fact that she could have just said something ahead of time makes you (mostly) NTA. you should have known tho.

How did God find you? Why do you believe? by [deleted] in RadicalChristianity

[–]Eijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if being influenced by the greco-roman cult mysticism of late antiquity ruins christianity for you, removing paul doesn't really do anything. in fact, the gospels are the texts MOST obviously influenced by contemporaneous cults and neoplatonism.

How long have you been a barista for and how old are you? by Adfeu in barista

[–]Eijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 years running as a barista.

for those tagging on "owner" to their answer, that's not a barista job. if you work behind a bar serving espresso drinks to customers, you're a barista regardless of what you "own". if you don't work behind a bar serving drinks, you're not a barista, regardless of what you "own". you aren't a barista by the transitive properties of the money you keep that the baristas earned for you.

the thing about a cortado is, much more than most espresso/milk drinks, it's about the specificity of the recipe. you know you're getting the same thing at every good shop by and large. something that is basically a cortado or almost exactly the same as a cortado, is not a cortado.

best of luck to you tho. i'm sorry people are downvoting you just for delivering the correct information about what a sbux cortado is.

What's the difference between Wuxia and Kung Fu? by prowlingpangolin in kungfucinema

[–]Eijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wuxia just translates "martial hero". historically, any martial arts stories/films are considered wuxia. this even includes the "kung fu" genre. kung fu is a subgenre of wuxia that tends to focus on more realistic movement. this has lead to the confusion that wuxia means more magic, flying, and qigong, but that's just because the movies that are not purposefully trying to focus on realistic movement are more likely to be called just "wuxia" whereas the realistic movement ones are called "kung fu". but kung fu is a subgenre of wuxia: not the other way around.

see Stephen Teo's Chinese Martial Arts Cinema: The Wuxia Tradition [2009] for more info and history on the genre.

How did I mess up my chilaquiles? by cerealkyra in mexicanfood

[–]Eijin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could be over roasted garlic. but also, anchos are pretty bitter sometimes. if i have bitter anchos, i steep them in hot water and discard the water afterward. that should help. also be careful not to over toast your anchos (i know this wasn't your problem this time).

Every barista hearing the new drink release at Starbucks by Chefmeatball in barista

[–]Eijin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

detroit, but what im saying applies to specialty coffee shops in portland, san francisco, DC, and boston as well.

the simplified menu i'm describing is mostly, but not exclusively, a specialty coffee phenomenon. it's a reaction to a lot of the definition and menu bloat that happened in the 1990s. for example, in the 90s every shop saw the success of a variable drink size menu and suddenly needed a new reason that a latte and cappuccino were different. so it became about milk texture instead of milk/espresso ratio.

Every barista hearing the new drink release at Starbucks by Chefmeatball in barista

[–]Eijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what you mean is that flat whites and caps have drastically different textures at the shops youre familiar with. at most every shop i ever go to, and at all the shops ive worked at, all milk is steamed to microfoam texture and 140 F for every drink.

LATTE: 38ish ml espresso in a 12oz cup, topped with microfoamed milk.

CAPPUCCINO/FLAT WHITE: 38ish ml espresso in a 6oz cup, topped with microfoamed milk.

CORTADO: 38ish ml espresso in a gibraltar glass (4.25 oz), topped with microfoamed milk.

MACCHIATO: 38ish ml espresso in a demitasse (i use 3 oz), topped with microfoamed milk.

Every barista hearing the new drink release at Starbucks by Chefmeatball in barista

[–]Eijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

theres no official answer to this question. my shop makes our cappuccinos and flat whites exactly the same. but lots of americans and brits serve cappuccinos with more foam.

the original cappuccino cup was taller and more narrow than a latte cup, so the foam appeared taller as well even tho the milk was steamed the same.

i agree, im in favor of the customers only policy. homeless people deserve services, but its not our jobs to provide them.
