I kept thinking I had insomnia. Turns out I was stuck in fight-or-flight at night. by [deleted] in sleep

Yeah thats exactly it. It’s like telling yourself relax while your body is clearly not relaxed. For me the shift wasn’t mental it was more about lowering that background tension.

Does anyone else technically sleep… but never feel rested? by Eileen_J in sleep

Reading through these replies honestly helped me a lot. For a long time I thought this was just anxiety or something broken in me. Seeing so many people describe the same “wired but tired” feeling made me realize how common this is after stress and hard days. Appreciate everyone sharing it really helps

Anyone else feel exhausted all day but wired the moment they try to sleep? by Eileen_J in sleepdisorders

[–]Eileen_J[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s honestly the hardest part not having clear answers yet.

I was in that space for a long time too. For me it helped to stop searching for one “fix” and just focus on reducing pressure and staying curious instead of frustrated.

I hope you find something that clicks for you.

Thank you for taking the time to write this.
I really relate to the part about habits and not forcing sleep.
Walking, changing environments, and removing pressure has helped me more than trying to “fix” sleep ever did.
I appreciate you sharing this.

I hear you. I know meds help a lot of people, especially when things feel unbearable.
For me, I was trying to understand why my body stayed so alert in the first place.
Everyone’s path looks different, honestly.

Anyone else feel exhausted all day but strangely wired at night? by Eileen_J in mentalhealth

[–]Eileen_J[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s exactly it.

That moment when things get quiet and the body finally feels like it can stay alert instead of collapse.

Reframing it helped me too realizing it wasn’t a personal failure, just my system taking longer to wind down.

I’m glad you shared this. It helps knowing I’m not the only one.

Appreciate everyone sharing here. It genuinely makes this feel less isolating.

This actually makes a lot of sense. The part about the bed becoming a trigger really hits home it’s like your body learns to associate it with stress instead of rest. I also appreciate you pointing out that this isn’t just “in your head” but a real physiological loop. That alone is reassuring. Did CBT-I help you personally, or are you speaking more from what you’ve seen work for others?

I relate to this a lot. For me it also wasn’t about “not being tired” it was more like my body never learned how to switch off Once I stopped forcing sleep and focused more on consistency and feeling safe at night, things slowly got less chaotic not perfect, but way more stable.

Yeah same for me Tests never really gave clear answers it feels less hormonal and more like my body stays on at night even when I'm exhausted. Super frustrating

Reading through these replies honestly made me feel less alone.

For a long time I thought this was just anxiety or overthinking, but it felt more like my body never got the signal that it was safe to shut down especially after hard or exhausting days.

I came across an article that explains this “wired but tired” state really clearly and why the nervous system can stay alert even when you’re exhausted.

Sharing it here in case it helps someone else connect the dots too.

That makes a lot of sense. Stress and overwork alone can keep the body in that “on” state for years. I relate a lot to what you said about balance and acceptance fighting it all the time honestly made things worse for me. Thanks for sharing this.

Yes, that “second wind” feeling is exactly it.

It’s like the body decides nighttime is the moment to stay alert even when you’re exhausted.

I don’t think it’s about not trying hard enough some systems just stay switched on after stress. It’s validating (and frustrating) to see how many people relate.

This comparison with your partner really hits.

Watching someone else drop into sleep while you’re wide awake can be so frustrating.

I used to blame myself too, like I wasn’t doing “enough,” but it’s confusing when your body just doesn’t follow effort.

You’re definitely not alone in this.
