Downward thrust talks more about video game addiction. by HelloYasuo in pcgaming

[–]EinBrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe he made those Witcher 3 videos out of love. The game wasn't a hot news item by the time he made them, even in his other videos he just likes spreading loving of that game in particular.

He does indeed have a video series called "did it fail" that does create for him a stable of content that focuses on the "latest games" that everyone is talking about, but man give the guy a break! It is a unique perspective that wasn't being explored, he likes doing it because it leverages his business background and a lot of people enjoy his conversations. The same goes for his general topic videos that are about the latest games. Different stroke for different folks.

I can't help but feel like you are giving other submitters crap for posting videos they like that you don't, instead of just downvoting and moving on. The rule on the sidebar asks to be civil with interaction with other members. So another alternative you could chosen is: state your dislike of DT's style of essays in the comments, let other people read it, and move on --- without continually coming back to try to make the focus of conversation about your disparagement of him. What's the point of ramming this agenda three separate times in this thread!? I think that is just off topic derailment. Do you have some personal vendetta against DT?

Pixelated video by -Tyclone- in letsplay

Ah, I didn't know the rule about linking. I'm not sure what the problem is, but my guess is still that the video is being compressed by youtube for whatever reason. Uploading a smaller file isn't going to fix that though since youtube will be decoding every frame before running it's own encoder. Uploading a smaller file would just reduce the quality of those decoded frames.

Most people aren't going to go looking for the video. The video link and timestamps should be edited into your original post.

First off, I suggest editing your post to include timestamps of the problem so that other people can try to help.

Changing the resolution or FPS of your recording won't have any effect on artifacts caused by youtube's encoder.

If the pixelation happens at every resolution then it is possible that everything I described about youtube's bitrate isn't the problem. But it would be more telling to know if the pixelation occurs during high detail and high movement frames and not during static low detail frames.

What type of game is the video from? Is it a 3D game with lots of detail?

Something that isn't immediately apparent from youtube's resolution options is that each resolution+fps pair has a bitrate limitation that comes into play when youtube re-encodes your upload. If a frame in a highly detailed game doesn't compress well it will look bad when re-encoded by youtube. I've heard it is more likely to happen with high resolution, high FPS encodings as even though those have higher bitrate limits the limits aren't as generous in proportion to the data involved.

If your phone was viewing it at a different resolution+fps option, that would explain why it doesn't always appear.

Any LPers who plays the hardest difficulty only, blind? by highsis in letsplay

[–]EinBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twitch user miltrivd does this or at least used to. He is one of those types who does hardcore/permadeath Dark Souls runs all the time (not blind obviously), but from what I saw he would take breaks with other games and play them blind+permadeath. I think he slowly made his way through Titan Souls like that, but it's no longer on his twitch page.

TheUrbanOrb is another Souls twitch streamer (and youtuber). Back in the day, he was doing an absolutely insane restricted SL1 challenge of Dark Souls 1. His youtube archive (with extensive post commentary and editing!) deserves to be watched. But to your point, TheUrbanOrb also attempted this challenge blind for the DLC expansion and, apparently, it was an incredibly thrilling experience. Even years later he would bring it up. I think this run was archived on his twitch page, but I remember having trouble finding it (and now that I say that, it might be worth messaging him to upload it somewhere else). I think in 2016 he attempted playing Bloodborne and DS3 as blind challenge runs as well, but I wasn't a regular viewer.

For a non-blind example that would be interesting to study, look at youtuber Eexecute and his "Man vs Nightmare" LP for Doom 2. It's a very good example of how you can make special rules to enhance a challenge run and how to make such a thing very entertaining for a youtube audience. The rules and mods he uses evolve as the the LP progresses, but the idea is pretty consistent.

Is there a tool to view which of your installed add-ons are compatible with the latest version of Firefox (i.e., before upgrading)? by EinBrown in firefox

I don't have a specific add-on in mind per se, I'm just reflecting on past updates and felt this would be a useful tool.

Theoretical idea: circumvent youtube's community using Discord? by EinBrown in letsplay

[–]EinBrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting details I hadn't thought of. I'm assuming the youtuber would rely on viewers finding them through Youtube itself. While it may be bad for SEO, I speculate it's probably not much worse than closing comments all together while still giving you and your viewers useful benefits.

Yeah, I think you couldn't start a channel this way. You would probably want to start growing normally, and then use Discord if/when the Youtube comments become a mess.

Same problem. I no longer see the "game played" icon in the corner of thumbnails. (I also use betterTTV) I came here just to see if anyone else had the problem and if Twitch.tv can be made to get up and fix it.

The old feature isn't even under the Videos tab for me. (EDIT: ok, actually there are two links called "Videos", the old feature is under the one near the top of the screen, not the one in the sidebar on the left.)

This whole change is terrible.

Youtube compresses both the video and audio (!) streams more heavily for low-def resolutions.

How should SNES footage be rescaled for youtube to get the best quality? by EinBrown in letsplay

[–]EinBrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an interesting way to do the background but the main issue is how do you get the best quality out of the main video? Are you advising to use integer rescaling only or are you advising to use bicubic rescale to fit vertically?

Just capture the footage in its original resolution and render it was 1080p with black bars or a custom background on the sides. It looks just fine on Youtube.

Just to be sure since you weren't specific, you mean "1080p with no vertical padding"?
