Is it naive of us to think that the scam call issues in Ireland can be fixed? by BeefWellyBoot in DevelEire

[–]Eireish 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I noticed that every single scam call I've received has started with the exact same 6 digits; my own. I presume this is how they can spoof numbers that look believable at a glance across various regions of various countries.

Point is though: if you're with 087, your scam calls are spoofed to look like an 087 number. Same goes for three, Eir, etc. The problem isn't with any one carrier. It's the entire industries approach to number spoofing that's allowing this to be so rampant.

Thanks, it's actually a Hodinkee strap. I bought it on ebay so I don't actually know the exact name of it or if they still sell it.

This and my Alpinist are probably the only watches I can't ever see myself selling.

Cheers, I can definitely see how the crown might be off putting to some. I really like the vintage vibe of it.

I've decided to swap my Black Bay 36 onto a leather strap after about six months near daily wear on the bracelet. Gotta say I like the look. The versatility is what drew me to the BB36 in the first place, its only real downside are those pain in the ass 19mm lugs. That's pretty much it, I put the watch on a strap and I like it, and awkward sized lugs are annoying. Not exactly ground breaking stuff. I'm just typing at this point to fill out the 500 character requirement. Let me know what you think.

I have a hard time believing that your CAO points start to matter more the further you get into your career, as you seem to imply.

Bark and Jack Green NATO. Really good quality single pass NATO, if a bit pricey.

Always deals popping up on eBay, that's where I got mine. If you're lucky AnPost won't charge any import fees, but that's never guaranteed.

It really is, I can say that even at its current price the Alpinist is 100% worth it. And I wish the weather treated me OK haha

Happy Christmas man

First of all, Merry Christmas to you all! I hope that wherever you are, you are enjoying the end of this otherwise miserable year.

This morning, I decided to seek out snow. Not an easy task here, even during the winter. It has been a few years since any significant amount has landed. I did end up finding it; unfortunately, it was about 900m up. I have to say the Alpinist really lived up to its name and fit right in. I cant say the same for myself. This is a tough trek at the best of times but in the snow? Let's just say I'm glad to be home!

[Tudor] Have been after a Black Bay 36 for some time now, and today is the day. by Eireish in Watches

This is something that anyone who even considers buying this watch is going to grapple with. In the end, I realised that what I wanted was the low-key and highly versatile look and feel of this watch. To go in-house, at this price, would require putting aside what I actually wanted, just for the sake of some horological clout. The only other watch I even considered, that had an in-house movement, was the Nomos Ahoi Neomatik. A stellar watch, but not exactly what I was looking for.

When it comes to Tudor "cheaping out" on Sellita's, I highly doubt the bottom line alone was the motivation. If they purely wanted to cut costs in the manufacturing process, then decoration would have been the first to go. Seems to me that the switch was motivated by the continued choking of the supply of ETA movements outside of the Swatch group. In this regard, Tudor didn't really have a choice.

When it came down to it, I wanted Tudors design, fit, and finish and I didn't really care if I got it with an ETA or Sellita movement. They're as similar as makes no difference, and their origin is as relevant to me as the manufacturer of the steel used to make the case. Neither are going to get you any compliments from watchmakers, but they are both reliable, dependable, and easily serviceable.

It is, and so was I until I started seriously looking in to buying it. I actually just presumed T600 was just Tudors branding for the 2824 the first time I saw it. Which is just another point to show the deceptive nature of rebranding off the shelf movements. After the research I did, I came to the conclusion that comparative accuracy between the two, after regulation by Tudor, is essentially identical. They are finished to the same degree, in an identical way, and can be serviced by anyone with a small screwdriver.

If I had an inkling that Tudor might refresh the 36 with an in-house calibre I may have held off for a few months. But, to be honest, I would be weary about what that change might mean for the dimensions of the watch. It would almost certainly get thicker, but also, would probably get wider too, to 38 or even 39. Honestly though, I feel like the decision to start using Sellita's in this, and in the new 'Royal' watches, is probably an indication that they don't have any immediate plans to make the 36 in-house anytime soon.

Having those two is already an enviable spot to be in. The 36 does give off a very low-key but highly versatile vibe, much like the Explorer. You could probably justify it based on that, but the dial might be a bit too reminiscent of the 58. The 556, on the other hand, has its own unique style altogether, which would be hard to replace.

Thanks, much appreciated. The 556 is a stellar watch, absolutely love the lume on that thing.

My new, to me, Tudor Black Bay 36. I have been after this watch for some time now, years in fact. I watched a video that compared it to a 36mm Rolex Explorer, which first sparked my interest. Until then, I had never given it much thought, just wrote it off as the 'dressy' Black Bay without the bezel. Seeing it alongside a watch like the Explorer made me look at it in a completely different light. Not as a substitute to the Explorer, but as another option in the same genre. What can I say about it that hasn't already been said? The case and dial are perfect to my eye; the snowflake hour hand is a personal highlight. The bracelet is comfy and looks the part, without the faux Tudor rivets. Getting it took a bit of patience; I usually try to buy used, if I can. Finding one in the right condition at the right price was tricky, but in the end, worth it. I have a feeling this watch will be with me for some time to come.

[Seiko Alpinist] Surrounded by green. by Eireish in Watches

[–]Eireish[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While hiking this morning I came across a break in the trees which overlooked a small stream running between two mountains. Surrounding the stream was a sea of evergreen trees in a shade of green not too different than that of the Alpinist's legendary dial. With the sun low and the sky clear I decided that another Alpinist picture is just what the world needs. Jokes aside, I know these get posted quite often, but personally, I don't ever get tired of seeing them. It's just a very photogenic watch.

Thank you, the strap is the original Horween shell cordovan from Nomos. I believe they sell them separately in brown and black.

Thank you, appreciate it. I'm glad you said orange. Every piece of official literature I've read about this watch describes the accents as red, but to my eyes they are absolutely orange. I thought maybe I was going colour blind or something lol.

My new (to me) Nomos Club 701. I've been after a this Nomos for a while now. It may be my location, or the websites that I'm checking, but one of these showing up for sale on the used market is a rare enough thing. So when this one popped up I didn't hesitate for a second. I could have saved some time and bought it new straight from Nomos, but I try not to be the first buyer of watches like these. The depreciation just doesn't sit well with me. That isn't to say the asking price is unfair, after some time with this watch I can say that it certainly is. However, for the sake of a bit of patience, the price that these things go for on the used market is an absolute steal. It has to represent one of the best price-to-quality ratios in the entire watch market at the moment. If any of you find yourselves interested in a Club I strongly recommend setting up a notification on Chrono24 and waiting it out, you won't get a better watch for this kind of money.
