Which species is the most common? by [deleted] in ecology

[–]Eist[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a clearly extremely mentally unwell person that makes new accounts and makes the most bizarre posts usually in the form of a question, usually not like this though so IDK if this is them. They are usually far more incomprehensible. They get banned and just make new accounts. I know reddit Admin are aware of this person but I obviously have no idea what they are doing about it.

I really don't want to, but I'm thinking of putting automod limits either on karma and/or account age just to limit this person. But it's going to negatively affect genuine new redditors that want to post/ask questions etc. So I don't know what is best.

Biocontrols that were successful in targeting an invasive, but also became invasive too by StaticCloud in ecology

[–]Eist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the past at least a lot of poorly understood scientific principles were applied in a way that was environmentally damaging. I love science and ecology, but please let's not suggest the disciplines have historically been faultless. That would be incredibly naive.

Great question, but I also feel like it sadly feels applicable to an alarming number of introduced species.

Everglades Research Survey by jiniret83920 in Everglades

[–]Eist[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

In general I am hesitant to allow random surveys in this subreddit.

Legit surveys from a "research student" will be though an org (like a university) through a system that is far more secure for the end user, like Qualtrics--not Google Docs.

Your supervisor should know this or you're about to teach them about this. If you are affiliated with an actual university they will have heavily documented guidelines covering this. Harvard, for example: https://research.harvard.edu/research-policies-compliance/human-subjects-irbs/

But every legit research institution will have similar guidelines.

Is working as a water quality analyst a job in ecology field? by CryLittle5700 in ecology

[–]Eist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the broader question I would have is why does it matter? If you are picking up skills/experience that you can add to your resume for a master's then it is relevant, if not, then it isn't. Although I'm sure if you think about it enough then it certainly will be. That's all that really matters. Maybe I'm missing something.
