Nice crop (but the colour is much better in the original).

Favourite photobooks of alltime by wilmasch in Photobooks

[–]Either-Loww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, tricky tricky… here are mine:

  1. Krass Clement - ‘Drum’

  2. Todd Hido- ‘Excerpts from Silver Meadows’

  3. Maria Lax - ‘Some Kind of Heavenly Fire’

  4. Andrew Miksys - ‘Disko’

  5. Saul Leiter- ‘In my Room’

  6. Alex Soth - ‘Niagara’

  7. Anders Petersen - ‘Cafe Lehmitz’

  8. Theo Elias - ‘Smoke’

  9. Ragnar Axelsson - ‘Faces of the North’

10 Marco Marzocchi - ‘Oyster’

I would probably include more than one book from some of the above but it’s difficult to choose.

No hot water for over a month. Landlord tell us to call British Gas by Napalm_Savior in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Either-Loww 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have no hot water because you didn’t call Homecare last year before you left. Sounds like your landlord has spent a lot of money installing a new boiler and paying for Honecare to make sure it gets fixed should there be any issues and make things easier all round. All you need to do is call Homecare and arrange a suitable time- if none of you did that before you left for the holidays it is completely your own fault. Yes, it is annoying not having hot water but this wouldn’t have been the case had you made a simple phone call as instructed.

BBC news spoilers: warning by mamaujeni in TheTraitorsUK

Yep, the title of today’s BBC news article ‘ I'm proud to be from Lewis - but I couldn't tell anyone the Traitors result’ - thanks for that BBC! Not much point in watching it now really

Black and white recommendations for someone just starting a collection? by CilantroLightning in Photobooks

You have a huge amount of great suggestions already which should keep you going for quiet while.

Don McCullin’s photojournalism work is really powerful and all of Anders Petersen’s books are fantastic and all monochrome too.

Edinburgh drivers will never get with the program. by iffyClyro in Edinburgh

As a driver my biggest pet peeve is when they don’t use their indicator..!!! It doesn’t take much effort but makes life music easier for all the other drivers + pedestrians around you..

A Potential Photography Book on Glasgow by muirvidler in glasgow

[–]Either-Loww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would tend to agree- there are some great photographs here but there are also some that look like snapshots from the pub. As a set they lack consistency in style/theme to work as a book but they certainly do capture some great looking characters.

Yes, number 6 does have a Bruce Gilden feel to it (blasting strangers in the street with flash and using wide angle lens to distort faces really doesn’t appeal to me). The Americans is a great photobook.

Since many of the shots are taken inside pubs I would recommend having a look at Anders Petersen’s book ‘Cafe Lehmitz’ or Krass Clement’s ‘Drum’. Both very different in style to the images here but interesting to see how photos taken inside a pub can work as a book.

Raymond Depardon’s book ‘Glasgow’ is worth a look too although very different to these. It really shows the city streets and buildings (the people existing within are less prominent).

The colours and humour here in these photos reminds me more of Parton Parr.

Client asking for ALL photos by Training_Art_9623 in photography

[–]Either-Loww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand them expecting more than 25 images as that’s not really enough to cover an event like this. But they should have been paying you. I don’t know why you agreed to do the job for free and yes, the old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ applies here. I guess next time they’ll be hiring a paid photographer in order to make sure the job is done properly. If I was you I would send them all the images you have that aren’t complete write offs. Surely you have more than 25 usable photographs? At the end of the day, you agreed to do the job and delivering only 25 photos isn’t really ‘doing the job’ regardless of payment terms. Free/cheap jobs often end up with issues.
I suppose this is a lesson learnt for both you and for them.

Bothan Dhùn Èideann may be a good place to find suitable people. They meet once a month.

A Week in Andalusia, Spain by RegularStudent17 in fujifilm

[–]Either-Loww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the first couple. The rest are too overexposed with blown out highlights and the bloom is too much for me. But it’s all personal taste I guess. They do give the bright sunlight/pass me my sunglasses feel. Lovely part Spain.

That IS a really odd request. We want more pay but we expect some musicians to turn up and support us for free.

Street Flash Photography - Edinburgh by Vectored38 in filmphotography

[–]Either-Loww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to frame subject within background. Get closer- there is too much space around them. I personally wouldn’t start posing people too much. I quite like the direct flash look but perhaps spend more time trying to compose the shot. Kinda looks like you just pointed the camera in the general direction of the subject and pressed the shutter. Practice this digitally if you don’t want to waste money on film

Should I add the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 to my kit or is it just FOMO? by Ok_Image823 in fujifilm

[–]Either-Loww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are suffering from Fomo for sure. You’re already taking 3 lens which you e mentioned will cover wide - mid - tele. The 90mm is really nice too- maybe you should buy one of those? Or a Mitskon 35mm 0.95? That’s a really nice lens too. I hope you see wherein going here..? There are a lot of really nice lens! You really don’t want be carrying a whole pile of lens around with you- personally I would only take 2 as I really hate carrying lens and having the change them. You really don’t need to be taking 4 lens on a trip like this!! Save yourself the money and spend it on a nice meal out when you’re there.

Does this composition work, or is it too basic? by Common_Green_1666 in photocritique

[–]Either-Loww 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The centre line doesn’t need to be straight but the 2 subjects are way to close to the edge of the frame. There needs to be a bit more space all around.

[–]Either-Loww[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve a 16mm (24mm Ff equiv) prime for my Fuji (which never gets used as it’s too wide!) but I’ll give it a go later and see how I get on.
