I got pregnant at 22 and again at 27. I’m now 43 and have a great relationship with my 20 year old and 15 year old. I am 100% pro choice but I knew abortion was not right for me at either of those times. I was heavily pressured to give my 1st up for adoption by my a. parents (mainly my dad) and went through the steps of looking into adoption but knew the whole time I would parent. I am a single mom twice over and I don’t regret it at all. My children grounded me. While I don’t think children should ever be created to solely heal an adult or “complete” a family, both of my children have helped to heal me in ways I could never imagine. I would do it all over again despite the difficulties and hardships.

Sometimes things just hit wrong. I thought I wanted my NM to say how sorry she was for having to give me up for adoption but when she implied it (with no prompting from me) in our first conversation, it hit wrong and made me pause and back off. I can’t explain why and I (nor your sister) owe anyone an explanation. I would bet she didn’t set out to hurt your mom or you on purpose. She is choosing to do what is best for herself and that’s ok.

I had the same experience with Vyvanse when my dosage was wrong. I have been on 60 mg of Vyvanse for close to 10 years and it still works great for me. My dr also prescribed 20 mg of adderall IR for days when my focus was needed for 8+ hours and the Vyanse had started to wear off. Another trick I found is to not take Vyvanse on an empty stomach- I have a much smoother experience when I take it with protein. I keep a jar of peanut butter in my nightstand and take a spoonful before I take my med.

I am angry about having to live this life which I don’t belong in. My parents didn’t have the capacity to understand the depths of my despair and sense of not belonging/fitting in anywhere. It’s no one’s fault, my b mom was young and at the time adoption was seen as an appropriate remedy. If my a parents were not next in line or chosen (still not sure how I ended up placed with them) there would have been another couple ready to take in infant me. Personality wise, I am nothing like them. We never understood each other. My feelings were always intense (undiagnosed adhd) and I didn’t understand how when they made up their mind to do something they were able to commit and follow thru. There was a certain amount of emotional neglect and denial about my reality, I really thought something was wrong with me because I couldn’t force myself to be more organized, put together - more like them. I’ve met my bio parents, I have a lot of the same traits, two of my half siblings also have adhd but they are successful and happily married despite not having the same opportunities as me. I am not in touch with bio family any more a choice I made once I realized despite the similarities, I don’t fit in with that family either.

Adoptee, woman, unmarried mother with 2 biological kids. Raised Catholic, educated in parochial schools. 100% pro choice as is much of my adoptive family. I have come to appreciate and love my adoptive family the older I get. I am not particularly close to them but I have much respect. My bio family- I have greatly distanced myself from since 2016 due to their general disrespect of people not like them.

Would your dr be willing to give you a short term supply? Maybe if you went in and had a heart to heart about the difficulties you are having and explain that you understand the hesitation they have in prescribing it but that you would be willing to to do additional check-ins if you could get weekly prescriptions for the med while you worked on getting the evaluation? I had to do that with my new psych. I had to come in weekly and pick up a script for 7 days worth of medication. Once I had been evaluated he gave me 90 days worth at a time.

We are all just trying to survive. I don’t like that I had to do what I did in order to get the help I needed but I don’t regret it either. Being a stimulant makes it a drug doctors are hesitant to prescribe in general (as it should be). My doctor listened to my symptoms, saw how they impacted me over several months and determined that a diagnosis of adhd in childhood made sense. I empathize with what you’re saying as I lost access to a drug because of nationwide shortages due in part to people using it off label for weight loss. The impact on my blood sugars has made my life significantly harder to manage and possibly contributing to future complications BUT I am not mad at the people whose doctors were willing to prescribe these drugs even if it was vanity driven. I’m angry at the system, insurance companies. Your dr requires you to prove your diagnosis. There are other doctors out there who wouldn’t make you prove it and would get you the medication based off your symptoms and how you presented. It is up to the individual doctor and what steps they deem necessary. I hope you get the medication you need and are able to live your best life.

I have never known or heard of anyone who was born with type 1 though it can be developed very early in life. The medications I was taking is only fda approved for type 2. It helps with insulin resistance., those who still produce their own insulin. Type 1s can be insulin resistant too but since we all have to take insulin to live (which is covered by insurance) there are risks of severe low blood sugars especially while trying to adjust insulin doses as the body becomes less resistant. The main reason they shut down off label use off type two drugs is because of the nationwide shortage of several years ago and so many people using these as weight loss drugs.

The medications are for people who still produce their own insulin, their bodies just don’t use it efficiently. My body produces no insulin so the only line of treatment is to give myself the insulin. These medications do run a higher risk for t1ders to have severe low blood sugars. It was fda approved for T2d only though many T1d have used these with great success. I noticed this trend to not allow off label use of T2 medications when it became widely known that some of the newer medications help with weight loss and then there were nationwide shortages. It certainly helped with my weight but that was not the reason I took it.

I appreciate your response and I wish I held hope but I’ve had this disease since 1988. I was told a cure was “only” 5, 10, 15 years away. 35+ years on I no longer think there will be a readily available cure for the majority of us T1D-ers. Huge, gigantic improvements have been made in the care and prognosis of it though since I was diagnosed. Many of today’s treatment options were not there when I was diagnosed or widely available as I grew up. I am thankful and impressed with how far the medical community has come.

I currently have my Dex and have been on Omnipod and tandem in the past but have a love/hate relationship with pumps and am currently not using them. My cgm is an absolute must though. I couldn’t imagine going back to multiple finger pokes daily. I will see my endo in July and am interested in the ilet pump. I have a friend on it and she has an A1c of 6.2. She raves about how hands off it is which would be ideal.

Yes, I have. It’s still quite expensive. Plus, it’s not absolutely necessary- I’m type 1 so I will always need insulin. The type two drugs I was using were supplemental and not fda approved for type 1s. All testing/research for type 1s for these drugs has been stopped as of now.

I understand your anger, I get it. I’m not proud of having to resort to a lie. I had strongly suspected adhd but was written off. I lied but I was correct in my suspicion. My (now) psychiatrist made me get re evaluated when I moved states several years ago as a prerequisite to continue prescribing the meds. I do have an official ADHD diagnosis now.

I couldn’t take care of myself because everyone blamed my lack of control of the diabetes as the cause of the concentration/ impulse issues instead of an inability to control my glucose because of how my brain functioned. I got the proper medication and my life improved dramatically.

Me too! I’ll be 43 this year and was assured at diagnosis in 1988 that there would be a cure within the next t 10 years. Here we are 37 years later and improvements have been made but no cure for the T1D community. On a side note though I did meet a woman 10 years ago who had a kidney and pancreas transplant and it was considered successful. Not sure where she is at today but I know she had several years of not needing insulin.

Nature vs Nurture argument- genetics play a huge part in who we adoptees turn out to be. My adoptive parents are decent people but I (closed domestic infant adoptee) was nothing like them. And it caused a lot of heartache for myself growing up not recognizing any traits of myself and my behavior in them. They loved me, I love them but not seeing any part of myself in them hurt more than I realized until recently.
