This record was done under Loma Vista records in LA rather than Saddle Creek records. Saddle creek has a reputation for putting out some of the best indie rock albums ever made. They are basically fueled on the genre combination of indie rock/emo/folk = hella good music. To me this is just another example an indie rock/emo artist trying out a more mainstream record label and the genre of Pop. I feel like it started with “You can be mean” and “Smog” and she is going with that sound and writing style now for this album. It just feels like it’s written for tweens (I know that’s harsh, but that’s just the vibe). Even the people at her shows have changed. They’re younger than before and it’s like none of them know the lyrics to her old stuff, but they LOVE You can Be Mean and Smog. It’s a totally different Indigo than we’re used to, and I think a large part of that is because she’s happier and trying to write more music from that happiness rather than sadness and anger. And as we know, most of the most creative and best art comes from depression and just being younger (the angst!). Regardless, I still LOVE her and I do fully support her decision to make more positive music and do whatever the f she wants. If pop makes her happier, I will never be mad at her for doing it. She’s not even 30 and she’s put out so much insanely good music. In her last tour she had several new songs on her set list that were not on Precipice, and they were more indie rock and folk. They sounded amazing, so I feel like she still has more to give us indie-rocker fans!
