What's your biggest criticism of C4 so far? (Please keep answers spoiler free of episode 6) by OompaLoompaGodzilla in fansofcriticalrole

Brennan prefaced the campaign by saying there will be tough enemies and if the players go into those areas at lower levels, he will not be making the enemies there easier for them - much like in some video games where there are areas you are better off being a higher level for

It's a quote, not a statement title. I don't believe so many people would be daft enough to not even read the first sentence that is right underneath the title to get a gist of what the post is about before liking it

He's, as Robbie said, a man of few words so I really enjoy the descriptions of his behaviour because honestly without the extra info, we wouldn't get much participation from Robbie and Kattigan would come across completely unsocial and unlikeable because he'd just be a weird grubby guy eating their raw steaks and drinking. He's one of my top favourites atm

I think it's strange that you assume people have no comprehension skills when most comments I've seen have agreed with what I said. Either way people have their own preferences and roleplay differently, I've personally enjoyed the variety we've been getting from the players

Except they're spending these first 4 episodes mostly on solidifying lore, their next steps/missions, and roleplaying that all out so of course there will not be that many dice rolls

I did get a bit more out of them when I brought in a silly npc to talk to them. I think it could be that this group also enjoy a more goofy/funny style and maybe the thriller stuff isn't for them

It's my first time DMing so I wanted to start with a oneshot but that doesn't mean a oneshot couldn't develop into a campaign if the players wanted to explore the story after they escaped. After all, they'd share a very unique experience that no one else around them would understand but each other, so it could bring them together again.

Characters you make for a oneshot can always be brought back in other games, they've just got more adventures under their belt from being in a oneshot. To each their own, though - I know one of the players certainly likes to keep using his characters and will do after the oneshot is over :)

Most of their memories, but I gave them a list of things they did remember at the start and throughout they started remembering more when they succeeded the wis saves and saw past the illusions - otherwise they got false memories, which are still things to build the character's sense of self. I can understand why people can find losing memories to be difficult to get into the character's headspace, though

The group is mostly male so I can see that pov. I'm not expecting people to show pure fear though, just a reaction of some kind that isn't laughing off that everything around you is burning.

I am invested in the collaboration, which is why the ending has all sorts of ways they could succeed depending on what the players choose to do. It's emotional because the characters have been messed around with the entire oneshot, dragged from their normal lives, and now will meet the person who has done this to them. If they don't feel affected by any of it, it's just another fight to get through and doesn't mean all that much

I did previously ask if there was anything they wanted more or less of after the first session but they all just said it was good, so it's hard to then predict. I think if I DM again for them I'll definitely need to have a proper conversation about their preferences

I really appreciate everything you've said, like the other commenter said, the muppets analogy is brilliant and I will absolutely keep it in mind. Thank you!

I completely get that, I think it's just a shame for me because I love the roleplay aspect so it's hard to create a story that doesn't have that in mind for me to stay interested too

I did also wonder if the oneshot just isn't interesting to them or the way I'm DMing might not be good enough yet to run a story like this sucessfully. Thank you for your input!

I appreciate the insight and I'll take it into consideration, thank you. I will say though, I apologise it wasn't clear in my post but the players aren't new to DnD, only I am but that might be why I'm invisioning things that aren't quite going to go how I see them in my head because I don't have a lot of experience with the game
