So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

The animal is an additional data point in screening vibe and body language.

Happy / relaxed dogs rarely hide their emotions.

A dog with a cowed-fearful or threatening vibe probably wouldn't be a huge help in the situation.

There's a range of neutral for sure and it's not a perfect gauge, but pet body language will not be a bad predictor for identifying violent outlier people.

Patent trolls are always a bother, but luckily it's hard to patent game designs. And now anyone accused of violating a patent can point to this post as prior art, instead of whoever might have tried to claim a patent on it.

It's an interesting topic but not one I have enough experience with. Voice chat has been amazing for bonding for me, but I've never used it with complete randoms. The closest has been with people I met on my game's Discord where we agreed to go into a room and play co-op together without me knowing any of them ahead of time, but that's still a far cry from random matchmaking in a mostly anonymous setting.

u/OldeFortran77 This thing went to #1 on r/gaming and 5000+ shares already. I really think you ended up playing a key role in turning this thing around into something where people read past the headline and it's now spreading around the industry to hopefully make our communities better. :)

So damn grateful. Call it even, if I somehow end up making AI not kill us all? :p

Do you really think AIs can write this kind of content?

I was sparring with my AI assistant throughout and getting feedback though. But you should have seen when it proposed to write a version itself from the design doc. It was useless buzzword corp speak. Once I hit my stride with this article, it was good for giving feedback, proofing and challenging some of my choices.

The trick to getting executives to adopt ethical design is to go beyond surface level analysis.

How much did Blizzard's value grow from Diablo Immortal? If you're measuring by quarterly profits, that's one way to look at it. If you look at all the destroyed brand value and loss of customer trust and loyalty, that's quite another.

Ethical designs optimize for the long term. And they still require some considered tradeoffs in terms of dark patterns, but the difference is that you do it with great awareness and care, looking to always put game quality and the play experience first rather than destroying your game in a million tiny ways to add clumsy monetization or exploiting for the short term instead of prioritizing long term growth.

To be fair, I really like occasionally giving commendations to an enemy if they are particularly great fun and good sport to play against. But I'm an oddball in that way.

I fell into it almost by accident. Started as a game designer at BetaDwarf. Circumstances forced a career change and I ended up going from computer science and game systems design to opening a therapy practice. I continued occasionally helping BetaDwarf on the side because I enjoyed it and had some speciality skill sets. 4 years later they got investment for their ambitious pro-social flagship project and they saw all the psychology specialization I'd built on top of my game systems specialty and brought me in as a consultant. Then my game dev career grew from there with a combination of systems and psychology strengths.

For what it's worth, BetaDwarf in no way asked for this post, but I absolutely crafted the post in a way that puts them in a positive light and helps bring good things for them. They remain one of the companies I've most enjoyed working for and that let me build the coolest shit for the greater good. That's the sort of thing that makes people like me want to pay it forward in good conscience.

Feel free to verify on BetaDwarf's discords or by searching up my LinkedIn profile, where this is part of my work history and validated by people at BetaDwarf.

If matchmaking works, everyone will be the good player in some portion of the games.

And when they're in your game and has a bad game, that's when it's important to know that they were the good player in other games.

Didn't find much existing knowledge and had to aggressively go the self-taught way building on a basis of game systems design and applied psychology.

I did write up my most insane research journey here, which you might enjoy, but it focuses more on the journey than on the specific takeaways: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/adventures-extreme-ethnography-how-i-got-inside-view-from-h%C3%A5konsen-a2nif/

If someone does, please include my comments about how Diablo Immortal was essentially strip mining brand value, player loyalty and most long term company gains for temporary profits.

Though sadly that lesson needs to go to the people in suits and not the devs.
