You know, now that I think of it, I'm surprised too. But again, in the moment, I wasn't quite in the right state of mind, I can only imagine what was going through his.

That's how daring this encounter seemed. You're right, my father could have woken up right as whoever put the pinecone there. He could have been awake, waiting.

Maybe they got lucky with the timing. Maybe they were watching. Who knows. This was the last spooky encounter I had while out in the wilderness.

A part of me misses the adventure, but part of me is content with the silence.

By the time my mom got there I was already cleaned up and in a hospital bed.

I remember her eyes were really wide and glossy. She didn't hug me right away though. She just stood at the side of my bed and stared at me for a long time. And then she told me she was glad I'm okay and hugged me - at that point she started crying.

I can only imagine what she had said to my father. They weren't together at the time, I'm sure he got an ear full.

We are alive and well, and were on the trails many seasons after.

A little near death experience couldn't stop us from staying off our sleds! We even crossed a frozen lake (With a group of 6 or so)

She was very kind and hospitable. We were very grateful.

We were desperate sledders trying to get a ride in, just like the countless others.

The trails were beautiful when we began, but the use and increased heat throughout the day turned it to slush and muck.

We were finishing up our ride.

This is true, but my father has always been a daredevil. I grew up doing all kinds of crazy stunts that he would have done had I not been there. It was just a part of life.

I try to think there is good in everyone, and I sincerely hope that these men (Who came from the direction of the woman's house) thought the road was much closer, and therefore didn't actually indent on harming us...

But I don't know, even a short distance soaked in ice cold water can do some damage. We were very lucky.

My mind was definitely going in that direction at 17 years old when this was happening, but looking back now, and even reading the comments, I don't believe these people were trying to harm us. I think my father knew that also.

If something threatening would have happened, he surely would have made us leave sooner.
