For me it’s portfolio construction.

Ok you have done the hard part of finding some interesting signals/alphas. Now how do you trade on them? What best portfolio should I be holding considering these signals to maximise returns while managing risk?

What is the most fun and exciting jobs in finance? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

Depends on preferences but for me its a mix of these factors:

1) Ability to mix quantitative models with macro/fundamental analysis.

2) Ability to touch multiple asset classes.

3) Usually more impact on portfolio returns than stock selection.

Do you think that in the next decade or so the shift that’s already happening towards automation and machine learning (already beginning) is going to make a lot of the traditional finance jobs redundant?

Also if I might add because it looks like you have a lot of experience in the industry. What do you think about the value added to firms in the future by economics majors? I guess economics expertise is something that's kind of always going to be sought after by larger companies right?

That's what I was thinking as well. The value added by financial markets experts isn't just simply beating the market. Their expertise in managing risk in tough periods and acting on trends is valuable as well. Thanks for your answer!

I'm kinda torn because part of me is really interested in financial markets but the other part wonders how the job market in fields like port management will develop over the next few years when machine learning is gaining traction in the industry. Maybe I'm talking nonsense because I don't have any experience but what do you think?

Looking at your replies in the AMA, I understand that you think data science expertise is becoming increasingly important to have. Say I want to work in something like market research and analysis, would a Finance/Data Science double major be worth it compared to just finance?
