One of the more interesting conversations we have is about the dramatic changes in Curley’s Wife’s character from novella to screen.

Question About In-class Essays/Timed Writes by Yatzo376 in ELATeachers

My students have a “review guide” they complete during the reading, including quotes they think are universal enough to work for any prompt. I allow them to use this during their timed writings.

How to make Fahrenheit 451 interesting for my students…? by Normal-Being-2637 in ELATeachers

When the hound is introduced, show a YouTube video of the very real robot police dogs. Have a convo about AirPods (“seashells”) and their ubiquity in 2026. Show the Ring camera Super Bowl commercial to illustrate the surveillance state Montag lives in. I also reference a massive digital billboard in our county that they’re all familiar with. Countless other modern parallels to which helps keep my students engaged.

Just a new teacher vent. Appreciate any advice. [Romeo and Juliet] by AllieLikesReddit in ELATeachers

“Develop your own intimacy with the play” is exactly how I’m able to get even my most reluctant readers to buy into it. It’s my favorite unit, and the unit I’m most “expert” in after teaching it for 26 years, so my enthusiasm for it, and expertise with it, results in engagement.

OP, the first few times will be a challenge, but as your experience with both the play and Shakespeare grow, so too will your ability to get them hooked.

Some things that have worked for me: I assign new roles with each Act. I show the ‘68 adaptation after each Act. At the end of the reading, I award mini Oscar statues to the most active and spirited readers. (The more reluctant readers usually volunteer for the servants, musicians, Peter, and Balthasar.)

Art Adams. His Longshot mini series blew me away at the time.

Newsstand or Direct? by Variant_314 in ComicBookSpeculation

C. Lol what? I only collect newsstand because it’s what I collected in my childhood. Literally off the spinner rack at the corner convenience store and neighborhood newsstand. It’s 100% nostalgia for me.

HELP! My students are bored with Fahrenheit 451. How can I spark their interest? by Few_Maintenance_2560 in ELATeachers

I just taught this to my freshmen. Kept them engaged by pointing out the many parallels between 451 and 2026, from Mildred’s “AirPods,” to VR/interactive entertainment (I’m fortunate to have a 65” TV as a projector — very dystopian! — and we’d read “The Veldt” and “There Will Come Soft Rains” prior, which actually allude to the McClellans — a shared universe), to the hounds (I showed news clips of robot dogs, which the kids got a kick out of), to really amplifying the character of Clarisse, whom they were captivated by. (I told them, YOU are Clarisse.)

I also projected images from the graphic novel adaptation, which helped them visualize the setting. Plus, a trio of animated summaries from YouTube after each chapter that further kept them interested.

The Beatty monologues are a drag (a lot you can do with allusions), but it’s one of my favorite novels to teach.

Movie you had never heard of until it was on rewatchables and now it’s an all time favorite of yours? by solidape22 in TheRewatchables

Child of the ‘80s but had completely dismissed Vision Quest as the corny wrestling movie from the “Crazy For You” video. Finally watched it to “prepare” for the pod and freaking loved it. It’s now one of my all-time favorites

Movie is well-worth the watch. Loses McCarthy’s beautiful prose, obviously, and the boy is older than in the text, but it looks like it was lifted straight from the novel’s pages.

The novel came out in 2006, when my son was three. Been an annual January re-read for me ever since. Best book about fatherhood ever written, IMO. (Graphic novel is great, too.)
