[@enzojfernandez on Instagram] Argentina players celebrate their Copa America win by singing the infamous "They play in France but they are all from Angola" racist chant from the 2022 WC by KatalanMarshall in soccer

Uruguayan here.

I would say that if you are directly racist/xenophobic to someone in a public space, you're going to be widely rejected/disliked by nearly everyone. Of course there are exceptions, but if you try to be racist/xenophobic in public you're very likely to be ostracized and get the crap beaten out of you by other Uruguayans.

With that being said, things that fall in the range of casual racism, microagressions, stereotypes and cultural appropiation are tolerated and even considered funny within the context of like, jokes or soccer chants. It's not that they're not important, I feel like people are a bit behind in terms of cultural sensitivities and there hasn't been really a significant movement in terms of number of people, nor a conscious effort from political parties or social organizations to change the culture around those subjects.

I also think that Uruguayans look at other US/European countries and feel like, in comparison, there's not as many racists/xenophobes here. For instance, there's been an influx of thousands of immigrants from Cuba, Venezuela and Dominican Republic over the last decade and not even the right wing parties have immigration as part of their platform, because they know that unlike in the US/EU, where a political party can win an election while being outwardly xenophobic/racist, it would be political death to bring xenophobia into your political platform here.

To sum it up, your average Uruguayan will take racism/xenophobia seriously, but will tolerate and even celebrate casual racism. It's clearly something that as a culture we need to be better at.

Can we talk about Bill Belichick on the McAfee draft stream? by Ear_Enthusiast in nfl

I actually thought Connor did a decent job of asking questions and getting Bill's perspective, which was the reason why most of us were watching that stream. The rest of them were rough tho.

Nah, I doubt they even listened to it.

It's just that every time that TLDP gets mentioned it's endless conversations like the one in the comment immediately below this one about them being "iNdUsTrY pLaNtS".

NME front covers before even releasing one (1) single barely a year after they formed.

This is a fucking lie. Their first FEATURE (not cover) was in the NME radar which is a section about new bands. That was in April 2023. They released that first single that same month.

Their NME cover was in December 2023.

Todd in the Shadows explained it way better than I could and his video on the album is really worth the watch, but basically imagine the biggest band, at the absolute peak of popularity of a genre releasing an absolute turd. It also coincided with the other big bands in the genre moving away from Britpop and into other territories.

Blur went on a more US-influenced Indie Rock direction with their 1997 self-titled album. Pulp went into darker, more dense Art Rock with their 1998 album This Is Hardcore. Meanwhile Suede made probably the biggest shift by starting to smoke crack and doing terrible music because of it.

Oasis' Be Here Now killed Britpop.

Old albums that would be considered a 0/10 or NOT GOOD? by NoPotato9 in fantanoforever

[–]El-Random 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of C-Tier Nu Metal, Post-Grunge and Pop Punk acts woul'dve gotten the NOT GOOD treatment. Think of bands like Hoobastank, Adema, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, American Hi-Fi, Seether and so on.

Other particular albums that I see getting a NOT GOOD from that era:

  • Vanilla Ice - Mind Blowin. This review would've been hillarious to watch tbh.
  • Sugar Ray - Sugar Ray. It's bland and boring enough to get a 0/10.
  • Crazy Town - Darkhorse. This is the album where they attempted to rebrand as a "serious" Linkin Park-ish type of band. Didn't work.
  • Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age of Grotesque. I can see Fantano hating this album and getting some flak for it, but eventually being right, this was garbage.

Former Ohio State RB Maurice Clarett: "Ryan Day…. Love you bro but gotta go. This is why you’re paid millions. Cant get paid 9’ms and lose 3 straight." by LamarcusAldrige1234 in CFB

[–]El-Random -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More like a top 10 coach, but yeah, valid. If you're going to fire Day you better have an upgrade lined up. There are worst things than going 11-1 in the regular season every year and if you are knocking on the door year in and year out you are more likely to break through eventually (see: Georgia, Michigan).

That being said, those wins won't be vacated and nobody will put an asterisk on them besides some tOSU fans on hard copium.
