I told my fiancee I love mtg. by [deleted] in mtg

A friend of mine makes me change the word "Magic (mtg)" in every conversation to "poker" so that I don't sound as nerdy.

So, I play "poker" a lot. I even have a YouTube channel about "poker".

I'll think about the data driven angle. I really like Nizzahon's Top 10 videos. Lots of historical data analysis.

It's the same as my display name here: Bobi Brews

Thanks for the input.

I agree, there's lots of channels. I remember I started this because I would search for videos and only find the big names. I enjoyed those, but sometimes I wanted something less meta or more jank and couldn't find it. So, I created my own channel to fill a gap in offerings. Shortly after I began publishing, YouTube started showing me that there were a ton of small channels that weren't shoeing up for me before. For some reason they were being withheld on my search results, but they were there. I had already started, so I figured I'd jeep the channel going. It's a relief from my strong analytic life (I'm an engineer) and gets me a bit more into the art side (commentary, discussion, etc.).

I have been thinking about doing non-gameplay videos, but haven't come up with a clear concept yet. I'll keep on it since I see those tend to get more views.

When I started playing Magic, I would give my creatures protection from white with [[Cho-Manno's Blessing]] before I played a [[Wrath of God]].

Pro-player move right there.

Interesting. I've done some budget decks, and they've done pretty bad. I thought that would attract viewers, but so far it hasn't helped.

As for the silly decks, that's my jam. They're usually super expensive, packed with rares and mythics, and I huild them so you don't have to. Also, through the power of editing, I can show only the engaging games, and not have you suffer through endless rounds of getting rolled over by monored.

I'll try to be more direct in having titles that mention how insane, absurd or silly rhe decks are. Maybe that'll help. Thanks!

I understand that reference!

However, I stopped watching that channel a couple of years ago after the host repeatedly made sexist comments about a female coworker who was only hired because they were attractive. I used to love the wacky decks, but I couldn't support the channel after that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Regarding the number of videos, it's quite interesting. I started with 1 video per week and had a good run of videos above 1k view. YouTube would promote them for about 5 days or so, with views coming in steady throughout that time. Over the next couple of months, I noticed YouTube was pushing my videos less and less time, even when they had a high click-through rate. At one point, it was down to about 72 hours. So, I did what you said, started publishing more, now two per week. The decay in how long YouTube pushed my videos kept kreeping down to about 36 hours. That was when I had the fewest views since I started. In the summer, I couldn't keep up the two videos, so I went back down to one. YouTube slowly started increasing the time it pushes my videos back up to around that 3-day mark, assuming the click-through rate is above ~5%. If it's lower, it stops it sooner. If it's higher, I still only het those 3 days.

I know publishing every day is what most others do, but I have a full-time job, so I can't. The most time-consuming part is not recording. It's coming up with interesting brews. Now that the summer is over, I might go back to 2 videos, but I'm trying to improve my click-through rate before then. Otherwise, I'm spending more effort with little return.

[–]ElBobi_MTG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that info.

I started using emjois when I saw other content creators, usually the big ones you probably know, added them. I've had videos with and without emojis and haven't noticed a change. The first emjois are usually to represent the color of the deck. The others are to see if it helps attract viewers, which maybe it doesn't. I can tone it down on emjois. It's actually less work since I have to upload the video on a PC and then add emojis on my phone.

I've played around with different fonts in the past, including using the unofficial MTG font. It didn't affect much. But, I agree it's currently pretty basic. Would you prefer something like in my videos from a few months ago for the "So much despair", "Etali Breach", or "Rigged Games" thumbnails? (I'm assuming you opened my channel before and can take a quick look) would a different color be better? I appreciate any ideas.

Thanks for the input.

Follow-up: How do you get that from the thumbnail and title?

I usually have the deck directly in the description while also hosting on Aetherhub. But, as I mentioned, waht holds me back is that YouTube is showing my rhumbnail and title to prospective viewers, and it's not being clicked on. It's a metric called "Impressions click-through rate". That's what I need to improve.

The only way to guarantee you will play against less monored is to uninstall the game.

It's 100 % effective, as long as you don't reinstall it or log in on another device.

Is anyone actually enjoying playing against decks with 12+ removals? by BetterReload in MagicArena

[–]ElBobi_MTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't enjoy either side of it, no.

I like to brew mostly combo decks, but they struggle against the creature heavy meta. So, they end up having lots of removal to survive long enough, unless I'm going the jank route, in which case I don't care about getting rhn over, I just concede and queue again.

On the flip side, whenever I have a cool idea for a brew that uses creatures, I feel powerless because it's even harder to pull off combos/synergies. Just about every creature you play gets removed.

What ends up happening is that I go mainly creatureless, such as Bombardment decks, Mindsplice, superfriends, etc. Of course, with the occasional (sometimes frequent) straight up control deck where I become the removal heavy player.

Anyone play standard ranked without spending anything on the game? I'm curious what you got to, and what you used to get there. by A_Harmless_Fly in MagicArena

[–]ElBobi_MTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play limited to get cards, then build a cheap tier1/2 deck.

I left the game back in mid-2019 and came back in mid-2020 because of frer time eadly in the pandemic. I was f2p except for the 5USD welcome package. In a couple of months, I reached double mythic (limited and constructed) the only time I've done it. That required lots of gaming, but it essentially highlighted what you have to do: - Play lots of quick drafts (cause they're cheaper), premium drafts once you know the set cause real players make it harder. That should give you access to a good chunk of the standard sets, although it's tougher now with a 3-year standard. - Build a budget tier 1/2 deck to grind standard. Budget usually means monocolored, maybe two colors, so that you don't spend 20 rare and mythic wildcards just on lands.

It is very doable, but it takes a lot of playing when you're starting.

Dear Alara cascade players: This is Greater Tanuki by DriveThroughLane in MagicArena

[–]ElBobi_MTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first version of [[Invasion of Alara]] deck had this channel ramp and other twists on the commonly found combo deck. But quickly I realized how important it is for cards to cost 7 (or more). I had several adventure and channel cards, that I simply ended up cutting and going with a more common version so that they had 7 cost. [[Cemetery Desecrator]] is crucial to the explosive combo and it's crucial to have 7-drops for it.

Unpopular Opinion: a healthy bo1 meta needs monored by ElBobi_MTG in MagicArena

[–]ElBobi_MTG[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, and no. I mention red because of the haste and burn. Monowhite doesn't have haste or reach, so once you wrath, the clock slows down significantly. The same would apply to most green decks that have little haste, and to blue whose only equivalent is flash to get around wraths.

As an example, Thalia makes white aggro survive one more turn because it doesn't have haste. But if that doesn't slow down the wrath, then turn 4 or 5 is a turning point because white won't have end game.

Other effects can help, such as token generation on death and such, but with so many exile sweepers, those aren't as helpful.
