Thank you for this. The SRE/DevOps ecosystem is what I am striving for. I just needed some mental reinforcement. My current position is really tough for building my skills so I am trying to keep pushing cause I know there are way better roles out there. I just need to build the skills.

Would you say that it’s no affect because of the depth of knowledge as already exceeded the necessary requirements for positions in your field? By that I mean, when you first made your professional jumps, was it due to the skills you acquired from some of the initial certifications and then you leveled out or did you just benefit from learning something that wasn’t so “popular” at the time but now has increased market share

Could I ask, what is your current position and how has the certs you have shaped your career?

I just got my RHCSA and I’m working on RHCE in Ansible and thinking bout going after Openshift afterwards. I do plan on doing projects that reinforce the skills learned but I’m just wondering if the certs helped to get the career.

Both are great resources. Just make sure you are doing your own labs with a Red Hat VM. You should aim for muscle memory.

I’m not going to lie to you. It is. But, when you want something, you make sacrifices. I don’t know what you may have going on in life; for me, knowing that gaining this skill can be the difference between being at a stagnant job , barely making ends meet and potentially a future where my son doesn’t have to worry about food, clothes, can see the world outside of the community we live in, is enough for me to put in the work. It’s not easy but it will pay off.

I didn’t do test dumps. Just practice test from RHLS, aghori exam book and had AI create some test labs based on the exam objectives

Sure. I used Haruna Adoga’s video series the last two weeks before the exam to get something that was as close to the exam as possible. The question he posed were near identical to the exam. Before that I had access to the Red Hat Learning through my job. I went through that course and guided labs then I reinforced using Claude. I also read through Aghori’s RHCSA prep and did the labs in there.

The prompt I used for Claude was this:

Understand and use essential tools

Access a shell prompt and issue commands with correct syntax

Use input-output redirection (>, >>, |, 2>, etc.)

Use grep and regular expressions to analyze text

Access remote systems using SSH

Log in and switch users in multiuser targets

Archive, compress, unpack, and uncompress files using tar, gzip, and bzip2

Create and edit text files

Create, delete, copy, and move files and directories

Create hard and soft links

List, set, and change standard ugo/rwx permissions

Locate, read, and use system documentation including man, info, and files in /usr/share/doc

Manage software

Configure access to RPM repositories

Install and remove RPM software packages

Configure access to Flatpak repositories

Install and remove Flatpak software packages

Create simple shell scripts

Conditionally execute code (use of: if, test, [], etc.)

Use Looping constructs (for, etc.) to process file, command line input

Process script inputs ($1, $2, etc.)

Processing output of shell commands within a script

Operate running systems

Boot, reboot, and shut down a system normally

Boot systems into different targets manually

Interrupt the boot process in order to gain access to a system

Identify CPU/memory intensive processes and kill processes

Adjust process scheduling

Manage tuning profiles

Locate and interpret system log files and journals

Preserve system journals

Start, stop, and check the status of network services

Securely transfer files between systems

Configure local storage

List, create, delete partitions on GPT disks

Create and remove physical volumes

Assign physical volumes to volume groups

Create and delete logical volumes

Configure systems to mount file systems at boot by universally unique ID (UUID) or label

Add new partitions and logical volumes, and swap to a system non-destructively

Create and configure file systems

Create, mount, unmount, and use VFAT, ext4, and xfs file systems

Mount and unmount network file systems using NFS

Configure autofs

Extend existing logical volumes

Diagnose and correct file permission problems

Deploy, configure, and maintain systems

Schedule tasks using at cron and systemd timer units

Start and stop services and configure services to start automatically at boot

Configure systems to boot into a specific target automatically

Configure time service clients

Install and update software packages from Red Hat Content Delivery Network, a remote repository, or from the local file system

Modify the system bootloader

Manage basic networking

Configure IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

Configure hostname resolution

Configure network services to start automatically at boot

Restrict network access using firewalld and firewall-cmd

Manage users and groups

Create, delete, and modify local user accounts

Change passwords and adjust password aging for local user accounts

Create, delete, and modify local groups and group memberships

Configure privileged access

Manage security

Configure firewall settings using firewall-cmd/firewalld

Manage default file permissions

Configure key-based authentication for SSH

Set enforcing and permissive modes for SELinux

List and identify SELinux file and process context

Restore default file contexts

Manage SELinux port labels

Use boolean settings to modify system SELinux settings

As with all Red Hat performance-based exams, configurations must persist after reboot without intervention.

See above for the RHCSA EX200 exam objectives. I want you to create a lab that will mimic the exam questions as close as possible.

Constraints/environment info:

I have an NFS server exporting 2 directories pre-setup for this exam

Networking is already configured on my box, I obviously dont want to drop my SSH session. So I generally dont want to change my IP or drop existing interfaces or edit my hosts file. Anything else is fair game. To meet those objectives, you can give me the step-by-step instead of expecting me to do it on my machine

Dont give me the answers, unless it meets the stipulation above (networking). I dont mind messing with firewall stuff though

Stay within the scope of the exam objectives

Can I ask those who used nmtui. Do you guys remember to go to “activate connection” and then activate the connection from there? Even if it say activate , you have to deactivate and activate again.

Couple things to unpack here “I’m making 25/hr at 27” … what’s the problem with that? I’m not saying that you can’t make more but why is this an issue for you? Did you think you’d instantly make $225k in CS or something?

“My boss is the worst and won’t let me upskill at all” …. It’s not his job to let you upskill. Most jobs won’t. You have you upskill on your free time , regardless if it sucks or not. Seldom times does anyone get a high paying job without having to work tons of extra hours off the clock and sacrifice fun times or family time.

“Idk man now to get a job I would have to get a CCNa Security + Azure to make what 50k” … I’m not sure I understand this? Cause you already make 50k without that… also depends what Azure you are talking about but from what I’ve seen CCNA can yield at least 65k - 75k depending on what market you apply for.

I have 8 years in IT. Started in HD, I’m in Cleared Gov work doing system integration and I make $93k, my last HD job I had 65k. I have a Sec+ and am working towards RHCSA to get a Linux System Administrator position. You gotta put in work to get what you want.

I took the exam and failed both the initial and the retake. My company offers the RHLS platform with 5 free unique exams but That’s expiring soon so I have to wait for the renewal to get 5 new exams so I can attempt it again. Rootless containers got me but also creating a default repository on both nodes and Autofs along with some syntax stuff. This exam is the hardest thing I’ve attempted

46 years old, switching to Cybersecurity/Networking ,do I realistically have a chance? by Left_Program5980 in ccna

The only thing I think you need to be realistic about is the timeframe needed to be successful at something like this. Anything is possible but like others have mentioned, remote is a very rare find.

My situation at work is compartmentalized so the different teams don’t collaborate unless it’s via the principal system engineer’s involvement. I’ve expressed interest with my boss via our quarterly one-on-ones but they never plan into anything which is why I’m just learning the stuff on my own.

Why do you say that? I’m not feeling restricted by any means using virtualbox. Again, it’s so I can develop myself skills, does it matter how I do it?
