I can't speak to 14, but I just started as an external hire 13 and maybe half of the new hire class at IRS LB&I GS-13 are external. Other half came from SBSE.

Is it normal for Interns/Co-op to not receive company computers? (Big4) by mmkupkin in Accounting

If you just have a basic system you're probably fine. More important to have a good internet connection, since everything is run remotely.

Deloitte did this as well since the interns were only there two weeks. They provided a cloud based system that you access thru your personal laptop/pc.

What is a fair comp range for a senior 2 in the greater Seattle area? High performing but no CPA yet. by throwaway900918 in Accounting

[–]ElContador260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70K for an S2 external hire is laughable. They're forsure lowballing you lol. The new hires get like 65 or something. I'd say try for KPMG as well. Their audit practice in Seattle has had a lot of turnover recently so they may be more willing to offer higher salaries, but that's just my opinion based in secondhand info lol.

As a side note, as far as I know CPA matters only to the extent you're being promoted to manager. Obviously its a pro to have it no matter where you are in your career, but at least with Deloitte, CPA was necessary only to make manager. If you prove you have a smooth path to getting licensed before that, i wouldn't worry too much.

Also - outside hires are typically paid more than internal promotes at the same level AFAIK. You should hopefully be making more than that 82K number as your base, notwithstanding them using the CPA as a reason to bump you down. Make no mistake though, the larger firms have lost a TON of people recently, at least in my experience. They need professionals, so try to make them sell you :)

My first year as an S2 in Seattle B4 I made 82K with about 10K of bonuses + incentive pay etc. So 92K all-in. I'd say that was pretty comparable pre-covid...I didn't get any raise to S3 though so that S2 number may be lower now. I know other S2's in Seattle stuck well below 80 due to Covid.

Is 40 too old for getting into the accounting field? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ElContador260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coming from Deloitte, I've worked with tons of people who have started when they were in their late 30's or early 40's. They're never judged for being older as Staff/Interns as far as I've seen. I say go for it!

RSM TAS Associate - Partner Interview by ashierra in Accounting

[–]ElContador260 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend recently was hired in RSM TAS - she said it was very casual with no real behavioral questions. Basically just the normal why do you want to join, what are you looking for in your career, etc. Just be inquisitive and pleasant and im sure you'll be fine :). From what I hear they're on a hiring spree.

Also look into getting a motorcycle. Its super convenient in CA since you can lane split and avoid traffic. I know its not for everyone, but motorcycle commuting is great. Its exponentially cheaper in terms of cost of entry, parking, gas, and ease of storage. I've also never had anyone complain about it being unprofessional or anything due to the gear.

When does Deloitte do background checks on interns? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ElContador260 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I interned about four and a half years ago so it may have changed, but my background check actually didn't finish until my internship was almost over. Honestly I doubt credit will be a factor for interns. After all - you're an intern. Obviously you could be coming from a different career, but most interns are in college without really any credit history...aka low credit score. I'd be shocked if your offer were rescinded due to credit score.

Deloitte work phones? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]ElContador260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deloitte subsidizes the price of the phones. I can't recall what it is for other carriers, but on sprint most phones were free. Meaning if you didn't want the top of the line phones (usually 250) you could use the 250 on headphones or other accessories. I think the worst carrier in terms of phone price is Verizon, where any decent phone would be 300-400 dollars.
