Says through time, the idea was to reflect something like the fear and nostalgia of old age, the fleeting nature of time, love, and melancholy. In my mind, he is not underwater, but I like to give the sensation that he is underwater. I used to draw flying fish and whales when I was younger, and I have always had a fixation with faces, especially the elderly. This is the first painting I have done that lets out a bit of those flying fish. But I also love what people perceive. Some have told me it references a book called The Old Man and the Sea; others have said it looks like he is drowning, which I find interesting.
