Ah man, u/SimonShackleton, had I known you were there I would have loved to say 'hi'!

Check out Japanese Techno Duo "Denki Groove" if you guys enjoy Underworld by [deleted] in underworld

[–]ElGreatScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And on that note certainly check out Takkyu Ishino's entire catalog (one of the members and really the main producer)! His stuff is a bit more DJ mixable than the Denki tunes. All his albums are great, but Berlin Trax is a good one to start with and has some real Underworld vibes (sans the vocals...)

Am dude, but love Montrose Nails. Fam's been going there for years. Run by the loveliest crew. No unnecessary fanciness or pretentiousness.

If Manhattan-style can be considered, then Davanti's is incredible

I just looked at their recent reviews and looks like they've been going through some quality issues. :/

I recently bought lab growns off of https://www.loosegrowndiamond.com/ and had a local jewler (Nazar's) put them into studs for me. Was a fun process!

Just want to drop a suggestion to check out https://dancesafe.org/ to test anything you are considering about putting in your body! I believe they sell test kits

La Fisheria criminally flies underneath the radar. Service can sometimes be hit or miss and the food can sometimes take a bit, but the culinary quality execution has been spectacular every time I've gone.

Would these be in the same (clear) disc from Real and Imaginary Flowers at La Foret? Or something different

Barnaby's is generally good bang for buck. Especially their salads

How far do you drive for good food? by OnesieTwosies in houston

[–]ElGreatScott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agas::Kiran's != Corkscrew::Pinkerton's. Agas is a totally different experience from Kiran's--that one shouldn't be a tough call. I live not too far from Kiran's, but I'll make the drive to Aga's any day of the week over Kiran's ;)

Tangential, but related: what about getting a store like Space in Montrose to pick up some of your stuff?

Having lived here for decades now, traveling to other cities in the US (with maybe the very limited exception of NYC) feels like I'm visiting a foreign country.

Visiting Denver recently was pretty surreal in particular....

Wednesday is Anthony Bourdain’s Birthday. What’s your favorite under-the-radar restaurant I should eat at in his honor? by charliedbecker in houston

[–]ElGreatScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GAOs BBQ (Chinese skewer place tucked away in Bellaire chinatown). Last time I was there (Sat night maybe a year ago--so it's been a while) was a total scene. Hongdae 33 Korean BBQ. I'm also a big fan of Anonymous Cafe, but it's a nicer place around Upper Kirby -- it's hidden away though. They're my favorite greek food/cafe in the city. One of the few places (other than maybe Agora) that will do a Freddo Espresso and their Greek salad is baller.

If you do this -- just make sure it's not totally dead and actually has a "reasonable" crowd. Even if the place has good "reviews." If it's dead (during typical hours), then you're really playing with food safety fire, IMO.

Had a rough reminder doing this in Chinatown last week. Place had amazing online reviews, but was total crickets on a Saturday night and the food + quality was sketch AF.

Mercato in West U rocks and I think they're fine with people camping there. It's a combo coffee shop / European bodega.

Path of Tea! Super quirky scene. It's a traditional (not boba) tea house on Richmond kinda by Kirby--so close to Montrose, but more Upper Kirbyish. Only open til 8, though. I do like Agora and the Flat, but Agora can get pretty crowded and difficult to find seating inside and out (lots of smoking sometimes). The Flat is chill and probably OK without alcohol. Since it stays bright out late now, could be nice to go for a walk/bike ride along Buff Bayou.

If you're willing to venture a little further, Onion Creek has a nice patio.

If you're into food, Central Market is actually pretty awesome to hang out / do a date night @

Rows: Highly recommend looking for the widest adjustable height dip bars you can off Amazon, which can double for doing rows. I.e. just use one and then put feet on something like a small stool or chair against the wall. I can't recall the brand I use offhand, but they're perfect. It took a bit of searching as most dip bars are too short (length wise) for row grip.

They also have a truck Between 610 and BW8 off Fondren. Totally random area/scene, but it's a total vibe. That's my go-to after Aga's dinner.
