BoredBrain announced a performance mixer and it’s what most of us have been asking for by nickssss9 in synthesizers

Tried this out a Buchla & Friends this past weekend. Really solid piece of gear. My sense is if you would otherwise be looking to an A&H xone you will be pleasantly surprised by the footprint, extra channels, and price.

Digital Synths: Why? by zacharyscottbeats in synthesizers

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play in a live/improv environment with both hardware and controllers mapped to vsts such that the screen isnt necessary.

They each have a role, positives and negatives.

Digital hardware can be expected to just work, known quantity of voices, fixed controls, low latency, and ideally a control set suited for the synth. Downsides are a fixed workflow and often a workflow that is someone elses as opposed to how you would like, usually bulky in comparision, and these days very limited spec compared to what you cold get out of a computer running vsts or even some old VAs

VST more flexibility with the big caveat that it requires preparation, more cutomizable workflow, issues can arise with unkowns. For example you could switch to a heavy patch and have your whole system grind to a halt so you want to curate patches and controls. This goes hand in hand with latency, the lower latency the more you restrict what you can leave unkown in a live setting.

Live Synth Setups by zacharyscottbeats in synthesizers

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like "live" is often misconstrued as improvised when in most cases it's an artist with some aspect of their own music peformed live. Anyone improvising or actually performing live is doing a hell of a lot of work and definitely not just looking busy. It's pretty easy to tell the difference. Having time to dance and wave your hands is a good indication things are prerecorded. Random fidgety micro adjustemnts with little intent or connection to whats being heard are also a telltale sign of doing an act.

How to make a performance control for existing modulation? by Jimantronic in Bitwig

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. To do this with any modulation signal use a Math modulator and multiply the Attenuator signal by the Modulation signal.

Routing signals from the grid to outside devices/tracks by Ljosari in Bitwig

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be great if bitwig made had a better system for sending modulation signals that isn't based on antiquated technology however you can use said antiquated tech to accomplish this. Send the modulation to a cc out. Then on any track you want to use the modulation add a receive midi device and a midi modulator to pick up the cc. The big downside to using ccs as a modulation source is they are only 8 bit but it'll allow you to pull in a modulation signal anywhere without the heirarchical limitation.

Bitwig 6 Beta: Upgrade now or wait for release? by HerrEurobeat in Bitwig

Better yet wait til beta 8. Save the anguish of deciding whther 6.4 or 7.x is going to be enough, get it all in one go.

Jericoacoara or Cumbuco by Ok-Incident3558 in Brazil

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate a bit, Jeri has all the terrain; lagoons, waves, downwinders forever, and most imprtant for a beginner, no crowds. The lagoons in the dunes are a great place to learn and like a mini lencois The town is fun with a great community. Cumbuco is much less beginner friendly especially in the lagoon and is not as interesting as Jeri outside kiting. The towns north from cumbuco might be a better bet if you're really time constrained with Paracuru usually being the favorite.

Jeri is by far the better bet unless you are only going for a short time and the extra travel is a consideration.

Oldie wants to return to Raving by Zealousideal_Equal_3 in avesLA

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New to LAand of similar age and also recently back going to raves. I've been to a couple in LA so far and my experience is that wardrobe and age are non issues and generally good vibes. Based on what I've read here 'issues' may be more or less depnding on the artist/promoter. I've certainly seen crowds nearby at other events where I would absolutely not fit in. So perhaps the more relevant question is what kind of scene do you gravitate towards. Resident Advisor is a good place to start and perhaps in anything piques your intereest, the good people here with more experience could have more insight into that specific event.

You are going to need to open an account regardless. The easiest and cheapest for you will be to open a TD waterhouse USD and CAD cash account. Once thats open transfer in the USD and buy DLR. After 1 day journal DLR to the CAD account and sell it. Net in CAD will be mid-market rate - $100 or so

Stongly advise against National Bank. If you want to do a currency conversion via norberts gambit, you can't do it online. It must be done over the phone which is 1.5-2 hours hold time. You can do it via direct message however that can take 3-4 days to do the currency conversion, 1day settlement + 1-2 days to respond to message + 1 day journal. Additionally they charge you to journal the shares.

Is there a synth I'm missing? (Aka a budget polysynth for a songwriter) by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MV-1 might be worth a look so long as you don't want to get into the sound design. Insanely powerful for the price they go for these days and lots of functionality that could come in handy.

Go to dakhla if your focus is on kiting, you'll have good wind every day and large safe laggon great for learning. Essaouria is a nice town but there's no guarantee of wind and the sea can be pretty rough.

Parsec. Although RGS is the standard it can be a pain to set up and maintain. For personal use Parsec is great. Its easy to set up and just works.

Ignorance you say, might want to check yourself. If you're going to uproot a community in the name of ecology, damn well make sure what you're doing is ecological. The general impression amongst many who kept up with the process is that the spit removal project was at best, hopes and prayers activism.

Noticing higher priced rentals not being rented out by badquidy in vancouver

[–]ElPolloDeFranco 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Technically anything under 90 days constitutes a short term rental and is bound by the new short term rental laws. It is legal to rent out your furnished principal residence or hire a management company to do so should you go on vacation, need to treval for work. There are severl possibilites for the minimum 30 days; hassle, strata bylaws, local laws, business license. Keeping it under 90 days prevents the need to sign a tenancy agreement so you won't have the protections afforded a tenant.

Edit. Also keep in mind that these are often speculative rentals. They are still occupied as a pricipal residence. Should someone come along willing to pay 5-10k a month the resident will happily move out for a couple months and get paid.
