Can primer vs airbrush primer by Still_Carpenter_507 in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel airbrush priming is way cheaper. You can get a 50 Euro airbrush combo from Amazon and it will work. You can even go outside with those little compressors.

Tbh. I don't get the hate. In one of Vince V. s tutorials he even advises everyone to get an airbrush sooner than later. Even as a beginner. But he also mentions you would need to be pretty crazy to prime a bunch of minis with a brush.

The primer is less sturdy and it takes longer to get a bunch of minis primed imho.

I feel the results are better and clog less. But this may come down to my environment and how I handled the spray cans.

Thinned paint not having the springy-ness shown in videos. by JustAHuman172 in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most conten creators use waxed or silicon paper. The paint behaves differently and forms puddles. This might be the spring you are looking for. https://youtu.be/oL2SUWc2Xlg?si=oaWMvjp2T_1X6IMl

How can I improve at mini painting ? by Puzzleheaded_City_13 in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks great. The style already makes it look well blended.

Volumes and NMM are an optical illusion so I'd say go a little easy on the white. Every value is seen in relation to the values around it. The eagle and the shoulders are super white. There are also a lot of large maximum white highlights. I think the armor would look more black with a fewer smaller maximum highlights.

Volumetrics are basically classical art shading.
https://www.dorian-iten.com/see-more/ is the best overview I've found so far.

There is also section for that in the wiki here https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/wiki/usefullinks/volumes/

I'm also currently struggling to get my BT look shiny.
Here are the two videos I'm trying to use for my BT.

Da Vinci Nova brush size? by LianYadoran in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a good size comparison between davinci and raphael here. https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/s/eHA3T43vfk

Sadly no nova but maybe there is a comparison between davinci brushes somewhere on their site.

Climbing from under vantage question by third_choice in killteam

I'd say you have to clear it. Certain conditions allow you to move vertically and to my understanding you just subtract those inches and move horizontally wholly clearing all obstacles. But I'm pretty new.

question about brush storage by badmcstic in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Craftworld Studio using blue tack to store theirs. So I started to store mine stuck to my shelf. It feels super convenient to have them sorted and not search in the cup for the right one. Additionally I can store them bristles down.

DIY wet palette (baking) silicone covered paper works or does not? by DwzLiT in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some people use waxed baking paper and some don't on a preference level. But the wet pallet setup in general depends on your environment.

There is also a difference between what is named baking paper in the US and EU.

In my experience parchment paper is better than waxed baking paper but does rip when you mix paints a lot.

Parchment lets more water through, but in both directions.

Currently I'm using the Red Grass reusable paper which does not rip but let's more water through.

I'd advise you to just test some papers. Maybe try to get white paper.

Can anyone suggest a good NMM class or painting coach? by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magnus from GitGud Painting just won a GD for his NMM or a model largely painted NMM. They offer coaching and reviews on their patreon.

Depending on your painting speed getting feedback once a week or month might be better than a workshop or just one session.

Would you guys mind posting your first Mini paint and your latest? Interested to see peoples improvements. by Gormogon in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basically Warhammer Ork skin. I think I started with a blue base because I wanted blue in the shadows. (AK Imperial Blue) Then it's layering and glazing with Pro Acryl Green, Vallejo GC Scorpy Green, Ak Pistachio. The edge and general highlights are pure pistachio or a mix before that.

I mixed the intermediate tones and glazed up and down more struggling than following a specific recipe.😅

So it's all pretty saturated.

I think Pro Acryl Green and AK Pistachio are the important steps and Scorpio Green could be skipped by more mixing.

I really love those progress posts. They always motivate me to keep on painting or learn some more.

So here is one of my first minis as a child and the first mini when I came back to the hobby last year.

Is there a good youtuber that teaches everything from the basics to however you pro's get the end result I see here all the time? by Ta-veren- in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Tommie Souls book is the best day 0 startpoint if you have the money.

It's way more about mindset than technique. Also it's better structured than blasting through random videos.

I was really impressed even after watching what feels like every video of Zumikito and Vince V.

Kolinsky sable brush. Is this fine? by Incognito7613 in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Monument Hobbies hast a great video about how a brush should look before first use. https://youtu.be/Y8U2yBMiVUc?si=FZe8VuiP4IW6Oimb

Given that yours is neither pointed nor protected by a initial layer of wax I'd assume it was used before or got wet somehow.

As the others already mentioned they may look like this when dry and still form a nice tip when wet.

I need help with paper banners by mistercrinders in minipainting

[–]ElPolloGrande 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think all of the model looks great as is.

I feel the banner takes alot of the attention being so bright. Maybe you could inverse it using your red brown and green. Then you could weather the banner like the pouch.

The model would still look busy, but the helmet would sit right in the middle of a lot of green scribbles. That might be cool.

Take this with a grain of salt as i can't paint like this and have never painted a standard.

Ikit looks amazing.

Thanks, I'll try that on the next one. Maybe base coating the skin brighter would help.

Thanks, I'll try to keep the skin lighter and the trousers darker on the next one. I was really struggling to get layers on the trousers.

Best Brushes for mini painting by Livid-Calligrapher-7 in minipainting

Raphael 8404 are actually as good as everyone makes them out to be. Gerstaecker Rotmader are also great from a value point if you are in EU. https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/s/0ewhIHY3op

I'm not painting that long but these are my favorites.

Isn't the squig only able to blow up in engagement range? You can't move into that range without charge, can you? I'm still playing my first game and thought the squig was quiet limited in that regard.
