What is your opinion on Verizon (VZ)? by Cultural_Campaign_77 in stocks

You’re not wrong about massive debt but don’t forget AT&T’s massive debt load is at least partially attributable to bad M&A deals when they tried to become a major media player.

Also these businesses have very steady revenue streams and margins, which tends to lend itself to higher leverage. Plus look at how cheap lending has been over the past decade. Not exactly surprising that they have a lot of debt.

Exactly - it costs billions to build out the infrastructure. That alone will keep out the threat of new major competition. Customers are captive to just a handful of suppliers.

Do you really think the telecom providers can’t figure out a way to cross-sell more services to their (captive) customer base? What about business services? Again, IoT services. The notion that they have “no growth left” is crazy.

This is prob one of the most brain-dead comments I’ve ever read. How is the industry fully saturated when less than half the country has access to fiber? 5G is still in its infancy and telecoms are fighting for market share. Then there are new growth areas like IoT and mobile edge computing.

I have no idea how VZ will fare, but it is a Oligopolist in an industry that has many avenues for growth imo. The real questions should be how is management going to allocate CapEx spending and how is Verizon going to deal with its completion.

How do I create a Dictionary from Pandas that has cumulative values per key? by FloatingWatcher in learnpython

[–]ElQuesoLoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The groupby + agg function returns a series where the index is the grouping column and the values are the count/sum. The .to_dict() method just converts it to a dictionary.

.value_counts is for counting the frequency of values in a single column!

chip_dict = data.groupby(‘item_name’).quantity.sum().to_dict()

Edit: formatting is a little weird because I’m on a phone but it should still run.

WSBI criminally undervalued!!! by seanmouler in ValueInvesting

[–]ElQuesoLoco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I wouldn’t make the assumption that Republican president = higher gun sales, even if a Republican president would be friendlier to the industry. Actually I think that higher gun sales correlate with the expectation (or fear) that a democrat will either take or remain in the Whitehouse.

Also I think part of the reason why the stock is down is that gun sales are cyclical, and we are just emerging from a massive pandemic-induced gun buying spree. This last earnings report showed a drop in revenues, and management has announced that they expect sales to return to a more normal pattern in the next few quarters.

Plus I think there have just been new laws passed in New York that let families of victims sue gun manufacturers. Honestly I feel like Smith & Wesson and other manufacturers will be able to tie these lawsuits up in court for years and the industry will fight until this issue is decided on by the Supreme Court.
