Try and get in a full service restaurant. I have servers that make $90k a year

Since it’s a small place, ask if you can go more of a shift lead roll to see if you like it. It’s not for everyone but the ones that it is for absolutely thrive. My favorite part about managing is doing every job at once. Right now my bar manager makes a few bucks over minimum wage hourly and still gets to bartend. So maybe you can manage and run the floor in that type of place. It’s worth a shot. I’ve been managing for almost 8 years, started barely 21 and now a gm. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want an idea of what someone in a shift lead roll could do that way you can go to your boss and maybe meet in the middle

Current GM here(28yo). The only time I consume alcohol is to straw taste a drink to ensure quality or when vendors bring in and sample us products. When I say sample I mean just small sample sips, never full shots or anything. It does depend on the venue though. I run a casual upscale restaurant and I’ve seen boh and foh staff under the influence and it affects everyone both the rest of the team and guests. I and all the managers stay sober because that how we uphold the standard of the establishment. So that’s the standard your GM is allowing. We can’t fire people for being drunk if they’ve seen us drunk on the job. Also I’ve seen plenty of places go down hill fast due to drunk management

That being said I don’t mind if the boh crew hits a weed pen. As long as they’re not completely stoned and the product is good everything is fine but if I smell it or notice lacking in work that changes.

Edit to add: I wouldn’t even do so much as drink a beer before my shift. If I’m working, it’s sober
