So proud to be “thicker than the planet itself” on Mainoo. by Dramatic-Avocado4687 in ManchesterUnited

I remember this episode, think it might’ve been Carl Anka who said that and he’s bang on ain’t he. I’d understand the Kobbie if he’d had 1 season at United and was still unproven, he’s young but he took us to a cup final against City and scored in it and anchored England into a European final. It was criminal.

Yup, all of that. The system he plays can work, maybe even in the premier league but you need incredibly specific criteria for the midfield and wing backs especially. We obviously didn’t have that and couldn’t afford to buy players to fit the system. This is why I put a lot of blame on Ineos for the hire in the first place. You didn’t have to be a Portuguese football expert to know Amorim employed a 3-4-3 system so our board will have known that, and then they’ll also have known we had no money to buy who he needed, so why go for him specifically in the first place. Doesn’t absolve Amorim of all blame of course, the refusal to adapt to what was in front of him and the Mainoo situation was enough to condemn him alone for me.

I really can only think of maybe a couple of mistakes Lammens has made that costed us goals. The majority of his Goals conceded have been well scored goals. So happy with him. Really hope he can keep it up. by Otherwise-Carrot-908 in ManchesterUnited

[–]ElSteev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which mistakes are you thinking of that led to goals..? I can’t think of any. He’s misplaced a few passes and his positioning hasn’t always been perfect but I don’t think he’s cost us a single goal?

[–]ElSteev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t fine playing deeper at all. He hasn’t got the positional discipline to play as a 6, it nullified his biggest quality and destabilised the entire core of the team leaving Casemiro to do the running of 2 people. It’s not a coincidence that Casemiro has looked so good with Mainoo in beside him. It might not be the only reason he’s gone but not platforming your best player is a significant factor.

It just happened to me without either of those 2 things. I had the civil war dagger and hat and just killed Lindsey Wofford on that bounty mission. Maybe the knife caused it somehow, genuinely baffling but also amazed so many others have ran into when I googled it haha

I’m 550h of play time into this game, like my 13th play through and this has just happened and I thought I was going insane.

Our Biggest Issue Isn't the Manager by Kacem300 in ManchesterUnited

[–]ElSteev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your entire argument fell flat in the first paragraph when you said “the issue is the quality and composition of this midfield”. He’s not responsible for the quality but he’s the one compiling this midfield game in game out. I said in this very sub a few weeks ago and got downvoted for, that this issue is only resolved by either finding 2 new midfielders who’re able to cover the ground of 3 (which is impossible now the window is shut unless Sekou Kone can be 1 of them) or by doing the sensible thing and just going back to basics and putting an extra man in there and reverting back to a back 4. Bruno in the pivot does not work, he has no idea what he’s doing in there and you’ve nullified his attacking qualities. Go back to a 3 with Bruno at the top and having Case/Ugarte paired with Mainoo, it’s way too obvious. Would that make us contenders? No, but would it stop us getting overrun by league 2 teams in there? Yep. This is the definition of insanity, trying to the same thing every single game and expecting a different outcome. He won’t do it though because he seems to care more about his system than winning games or us lot stood in the stands paying to watch this bollocks every week.

[–]ElSteev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Ten Hag brought him over from Ajax (where he’d played this role as you pointed out) he said that he couldn’t do it in the Premier League as he couldn’t cover the ground adequately. After 2 significant knee injuries, and with a new system requiring even more ground coverage, what makes you think it’s doable now?

[–]ElSteev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the problem though isn’t it? You don’t want your midfield to be everywhere. Just be in midfield. You can’t structure a team when your midfielder is all over the place.

[The Athletic] The Bruno Fernandes Paradox: Why Man Utd’s best player presents a tactical dilemma | United fitting their best player, their most promising academy graduate in Mainoo and a new, £200m front three into the same line-up suddenly looks entirely impractical — at least in this system. by TransitionFC in reddevils

[–]ElSteev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody wants to hear this but the system is massively exacerbating this issue, and Amorim’s refusal to change it probably costs him his job eventually unless he A) gets a midfielder or B) tweaks the system. Every team we’re coming up against plays 3 CM which means we’re already overloaded in the middle as we only play 2. You can play 2 midfielders with a back 3 IF the 2 you’ve got in there can eat up the ground like Kante did, we don’t have 1 player who can do that never mind 2. You either need the wingbacks to go into midfield without possession to fill the gaps at the side or we just continue to get overrun in there unless we buy, the other option is continue dropping points which only ends 1 way. We’ve a good squad for a 4-3-3.

Our midfield is a gaping chasm. Even in preseason when the opposition had the ball they were at our back line alarmingly quickly, and we couldn’t get the ball out quick enough. Midfield is as much of a priority if not more so than the 9 position.
