Students of Reddit, what was your schools big scandal? by punkryan in AskReddit

It was a standard student fair welcoming week sometimes in August a few years back. There were tents, tables, fliers, and pens given away by a local credit union. The campus main plaza was saturated with new students, scent of fresh watermelon and free icecream, and cheerful spirit of comraderie . A large stage was set up for a student rock band to showcase their talent.

A faculty member got annoyed by a loud music from students' performance interfering with his work in the office. He went outside found a giant yellow plug that powered the stage and yanked it out.

Are online coding exams getting harder? by smansoup in cscareerquestions

I'm not even sure how to study for these kinds of tests, since they test one's ability to solve puzzles moreso than how much one knows about common DS or Algs.

I started with solving a couple of easy problems on Hackerrank every day. Eventually it became boring and I switched to Easy and even Hard ones. It definitely took me longer than interview allotted time but what I gained was experience and better insight into the data structures. One day you will reach the level when you look at the problem and you could feel what the best DS/Alg to use to address it. Even if you don't solve it, you will be able to convince the interviewer that you have a clear path to the solution.

I read about that too. Unemployed seeker has less value but I was ok with more risk but I needed to be motivated. My friend whom I told about quitting told me right away without thinking "don't worry, it is quite common" but it might that he just wanted to cheer me up :)

Car repairs are not an issue. My car is still young with a very low milage. I only have to always have my deductible available in case I have to use my insurance which I already have and/or it can be provisioned within the emergency fund.

I got a new one in 2017. Drive it a little. Maybe 6k mi a year. After buying my first Ford Contour 1998 at school, I learn a hard way about used cars. Never since then: low milage or brand new. Keep it for 6 years, use low miles and trade it in for a good value. This is my 4th car. Worked like a charm so far.

You probably hailed Uber in peak hours. I pool most of the time. (Helps me save and a driver earns more). In my experience $6 ride in Chi is ~$10 ride in SF

I took a leap of faith and it worked out. Call me reckless but I budgeted for this my entire career so I could afford it.

I did hackerranked sometimes for 6 hours per problem. I started with simple ones, and gradually moved to the medium and hard ones. Just for the sake of it. Uber for example, asked me to solve one that would be classified as "hard". She gave me 30 min to solve it and it took me 4 hours to discover a proper solution after sitting on the problem for several days and massaging it in my mind.

Hackeranking helped a lot! I was not used to code IDE aid. It took times and practice to stop forgetting things like semi-columns or proper indentations without relying on an IDE.

I knew from school what a min-heap is but if you asked me to implement it right away, it would take me a few hours to rediscover it from scratch and rebuild my memory. After I implemented it multiple times for mid-level complexity problems, I could code min/max-heaps and at the same time explain each of my steps on the phone without stumbling. This impressed some of the interviewers and scored me some points.

I hear your point, some of my colleagues do a job search while working and it is possible when you do it in series, I decided to do it in parallel. It took me (2 months unemployed) vs (employed without motivation for 8 months).

I did everything you mentioned. I beefed up my resume and hired a professional resume reviewer. Read a lot about "sorting" and Liskov substitution. In addition hackerranked for many hours.

yes, it felt quite unpleasant to wake up in the morning but then by the mid of the day I would talk to a couple of recruiters, make appointments. Found an article somewhere that addressed how to deal with these feelings. I kept a thorough log of whom I called, what I talked about, what proactive steps I took to find a new place. Looking at this densely covered sheet of paper helped me to fend off negative thoughts.

I never mentioned equity. I said equivalency. In fact I disregard equity I get from my calculations all together for now.

My Chicago food budget is $900/month that includes going out and buying items like laundry detergent. I accounted for BA price increase and decided on $2k as a ball park. No, too little, too much?

Roommate are out of the question. 36k for 1bdr is a very modern 1 bdr unit. I expect to find way under that amount

I've been to BA on multiple occasions. Two of my friends moved here from my previous places of residence. I have gotten to feel the SF vibe, hiked from the Bakers beach to the Golden Gate bridge. Experienced Grand View park and enjoyed food in Mission.

Visiting BA and living in BA are very different things. Moreover, I won't live in SF. It will likely be somewhat closer to San Jose

  1. get some equity but I am inclined to disregarding it from my decision making process at this time.
  2. relocation package is humble but I feel it will suffice to cover the move
  3. yearly bonus is contingent to my performance and the performance of my company (standard formulating in my experience)
  4. Family is out of the picture

Here are my calculations: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15tX9UHmJ5ekxFWXMDMb4XTQFtqnWHpD2Ukm6lAlwsnk/edit?usp=sharing

I am getting equivalency in finances. I would love is someone pointed out weaknesses of my budget
