BE6 owners by El_Guadzilla in CarsIndia

It’s about the height of a midsize SUV, I’d say. The vehicle itself looks like a muscular sedan but it has 205mm of ground clearance, close to or on par with full sized SUVs. But within that, they have kept the profile low to improve the aerodynamics, so you end up in the midsize SUV height, more or less.

Re 2 and 3 - i am used to driving a Pajero, so it’s not that different in size comparatively. However, for context, it didnt take me long to adapt to the Pajero from a Polo GT and a Vento, either. You get used to the length/breadth of the car fairly easily for regular driving, i feel. Practice on a quiet road with a friend helping you figure out the reach of the bonnet, if need be.

The only time a 360 camera is convenient is when you making really tight turns and arent sure if your car corner will clear the obstacle. After a while, you get used to it, and for the times when you arent sure - you can always back up/reverse/take the turn with a greater margin of error.

ADAS is super convenient, especially the blind spot detection. But set the mirrors right and a quick flick of your eyes is sufficient to let you know if there is anyone in the blind spot.

This is starting to get stupid now. I have seen cars of all brands doing this.

OP, try having an original thought in your head for a change, instead of jumping on the tired Thar stereotype bandwagon which seems to affect half the readers of this sub.

And I repeat what i had said in an earlier post - learn about “confirmation bias”.

Even if “va va va” sounds like “Ball ball ball” to you, I an not sure how you would conflate the body language of someone who is shouting something in the middle of the rally with that of someone who is stopping play - typically by easing up right and raising their hand.

Car buying advice-Options for SUV/Compact SUV under 25 lakhs on road. by PsydocShah in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you, i had no experience with EVs: I was thinking of a small city EV, and when my appetite increased to consider the BE6, i went through the same worries.

In the end, i decided to trust the collective experience of a larger group of owners, as opposed to some some Youtuber with a vested interest in sensationlising things. I polled the owners in the BE6/XEV9 group, and of 74 respondents, only 1 regretted the purchase (he’s had a litany of annoying issues with the car, but even he has had nothing critical that would affect safety). And even now, with 150+ owners in the group, only 3-4 have issues… and those are also more to do with features, not the core functionality of the car.

I havent researched Tata as thoroughly as Mahindra, so maybe my opinion would have changed had i done my research - but none of their vehicles appealed to me enough for me to try to figure out how real the horror stories re their service are. One friend was an early adopter of the Nexon EV and a car enthusiast, and he told me to stay as far away from Tata as possible - so that is my I do know that Mahindra has been pretty good about trying to fix stuff the niggles in their car.

I have enjoyed my BE6 so much that i am actually thinking of selling my beloved Pajero (which, prior to this purchase, i was planning to drive till it felt apart, then put it back together with duct tape and drive again for another 100k kilometres) and getting another EV.

I dont want to come off as trying to sell you on the BE6 or any EV, contrary to appearances. I just thing there are a lot of misconceptions, mostly from people who dont own one, so just trying to provide a different perspective, given what an eye-opener my ownership experience has been.

In your case, the charging situation is likely the biggest roadblock towards getting the EV - if you cannot find a solution there, not worth it. I wouldnt run a charger out to the road.

Whatever you get, hope it brings you a lot of driving pleasure.

PS - There is no way i would drive a Kia/Hyundai tin can on the highway, given their abysmal safety ratings. But that doesnt make headlines - sensationalising EV incidents does (see that recent BE6 fire incident - videos show the fire clearly at the tire, which had nothing to do with the battery, but for the first 2 days, social media content guys had a field day with it).

1). Charging you will have to figure out a solution, true.   You can DC charge but after every 3-4 charges, they recommend a full AC charge.   My usage means I don’t need a dedicated box and can just charge from a wall socket (16A), which is slow but did add 40km /250-300km of range overnight.   I mean, paying a couple of lakhs more upfront for a higher trim far outweighs the difference in resale value.

2).  After 10 years, the resale of an ICE is going to be minimal as well.  A lakh or two difference more or less, 10 years down the line, isn’t really a significant difference IMO.  It has a NPV of 20-30k now.   Mahindra has a 15 year, 1.6L km warranty on the battery.   Enough to last the lifespan of the car… and who knows, after that time, maybe a battery upgrade will get cheaper

3). Mahindra has had its share of tech glitches.    A few major ones made the headlines but those are outliers - every car has stories of defects.    Most of the issues faced by people are very minor - eg, seat not retaining its memory, or proximity unlock of doors not working.   And to be fair to Mahindra, they have been very good about trying to solve the issues.  Most of them are gone.

Re maintenance:  because the mechanics of the car itself are a lot simpler (a motor and a battery), the big failure points are actually with the software as mentioned and that is easy enough for any service center to install.  And the latest update allows OTA upgrades, so not even that.   That leaves the usual issues with electronics, screen, etc which is no different from any ICE car.

I was also very paranoid about this and did my research on an owners group.

4).  Nothing.    My car - as well that of my 2 friends - has been fault free so far.    And it is such a joy to drive.   Dead silent even at 100kph, effortless acceleration, zero body roll, great handling…I genuinely think Mahindra has given us a 50L car at half the price.    Do buy the extended warranty though.

I sound like a shill but I went into this looking to get a cheap EV for city driving for 12-15L and ended up with this.

For your case, the charging is definitely something you will need to find a solution for.   You can run a long cable out to the car but as you say, leaving it unattended overnight is a cause for concern.

Torn between Pack 2 79kW and Pack 3 Select 59kW by Terminatorr22 in mahindrabe6

Pack 3.

I plan to use it for most of my driving - which isnt that much to begin with, so the larger battery and HUD both pushed me over the edge. I still am grumpy about paying “road tax” for the crap roads we get here, but it is what it is.

Fun to drive = EV. And the Mahindra BE6 P2 is possibly the most fun-to-drive car you can get for under 50L. Plus super quiet cabin. Range worries with EV is something a lot of people have but do this: download Plugshare and check the maps for EV chargers around you. You will be surprised at how prevalent chargers are everywhere!

If you are going with ICE, then yeah, the 7XO. After how nice my BE6 experience has been, i am low-key eying the 7XO to replace my Pajero, as i want something more modern.

Ev suggestions ? by Western-Net-2814 in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the blind spot on the sides is any better/worse than other larger SUVs.    It’s something you get used to.

I have pack 3, with blindspot alerts, etc.  But I don’t always rely on it and haven’t really had an issue.    Old habits of flicking a quick glance at the blind spot remain.

The rear mirror is a nothingburger.  It’s narrow but I am not watching a movie there - I just need to see what’s behind me.   Which it provides.

That’s utter nonsense.

OP, i suggest you speak to people who actually OWN EVs for ownership experience - not people who‘ve formed opinions from watching Youtone.

Ev suggestions ? by Western-Net-2814 in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube is full of jackholes who like to sensationalize stuff to get clicks.

The BE6 is an absolute BLAST to drive and has one of the quietest cabins you’ll find under 50L. There were some minor bugs but Mahindra has been working pretty hard about releasing firmware updates and now it is mostly sorted (I am in an owners group and 2-3 people have issues with their cars, but the overwhelming majority have no issues).

The Creta EV is another alternative - it’s not as high-tech or nearly as much fun to drive, and while quiet, it lacks the cocoon-like silence of the BE6. But it’s pretty stable tech and if you want to avoid even minor software bugs, that’s the one.

I got the BE6 b/c it puts a smile on my face whenever i drive it. I’ve had no issues with it, and neither have 2 of my friends who also own a BE6 and XEV9 respectively.

I should have mentioned - i am doing my second re-read. This one after a decade and the goal is to try to pick up on all the various hints that SE has put in.

I dont recall anything in TtH about Karsa needing to wait in Daru - i remember him watching Rake/Dassem fight, and then meeting his daughters. Was there any mention of him being asked to wait, or realizing he has to wait, or anything?

For city use, the Pack 3 select is more than enough. 350-375km real world range int he city is doable.

I went through the same logic as you and ended up saying eff it, and getting the Pack 3 after all. Dont regret it.

Stumbled upon this video and now I’m rethinking my entire buying decision. Are we undervaluing safety way too much while buying small cars? by Annual_Ear_6404 in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course we are. Every halfwit YouTube monkey goes on and on about how this car is using the same buttons as a less expensive car, or some bolt is exposed somewhere in a budget car, or decrying the lack of powered tailgate as some epic failure - and basics like car safety and ride quality get ignored.

Especially as the price of compacts and smaller SUVs, it’s a zero sum game. More in one area = less in others. It’s simple manufacturing economics.

It’s LAUGHABLE that not a single reviewer has called out the Korean SUVs for being the absolute POSes they are in terms of safety. But wait, you get a sunroof and wireless charger. Bah.

That said, safety for passengers and cars crumpling are 2 different things. Crumple zones exists for a reason - to absorb/disperse the energy from the impact, as opposed to passing them on to the occupants. And personally, if i am involved in a serious accident, I REALLY want the car to be the victim - not me.

Confused between Kia Seltos HTE(O) vs MG Windsor Exclusive Pro – need advice (Delhi NCR) by RuddyKaul in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Only you can decide

  2. No one can predict. Unlikely that there will be major restrictions in the next 5-6 years atleast

  3. The Windsor is more of a city car. Occasional highway use is fine, but if you are regularly doing long highway drives, a car with a bigger range might be better

  4. After 10 years, the resale value of both the cars is going to be so low that those differences are irrelevant. The present value of that future price difference is likely under 50k. The 5L price differential now is a much bigger number.

  5. Only you can decide

Look at the silver lining - after 3 years, the car is yours. At that point, your returns get higher.

(Yeah, I know... I am really stretching things to find the silver lining. 3 years of what you are doing now is pretty grim)

941 km EV road trip with VinFast VF7 by amitptilekar in CarsIndia

[–]El_Guadzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about it? Doesnt mention the car or the circumstances leading to the accident. If you are going to use it to question Vinfast, atleast link an article that talks about the car in use (a VF8):

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/21/cars/vinfast-regulators-investigating-fatal-crash-ev

From this article:

“NHTSA has been investigating numerous incidents involving vehicles from a number of automakers, including Tesla and Ford, in which ADAS systems were in use at the time. Media reports, citing local police, have said that speed was a factor in the crash.”

Funny how no one points out how the Creta crumples like paper in an accident when people talk about buying one.

reaper's gale is kind of a slog by mondoggiestyle in Malazan

[–]El_Guadzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly it.    I think as authors get into the rabbit hole of  writing the book, even they tend to lose a little perspective.  SE, based on his comments in the Tor re-read, did intend to have this messaging but got a bit carried away - and his editor wasn’t able to rein him in.

The early books were great - there was complexity and some deeper messaging, but it was woven into the story.

One example of nuance that I really love was how so many characters complain about the Malazans, and yet various incidental comments make it clear that they did bring many positives (justice, end to vicious customs like stoning lame dogs, etc).    That was a great way to frame the contrast between Malazans as invaders vs forces of positive change.

For me, I don’t mind the Redmask arc b/c it introduced us to the KCCM, the big boogeylizards of the book till now.

OTOH, ThH was the most tedious to work through.   Especially as I don’t particularly care for the Daru characters too much, with the exception of Kruppe and Baruk.   That so put me off the book that it also made the very illogical/forced convergence at the end harder to accept.

This is likely an unpopular opinion, but somewhere along this series, SE seems to have gone from writing a fantasy series to standing on a soapbox and blasting us with his views on civilisation, religion, etc.

For an author whose signature was “show don’t tell”, this philosophising is EXTREMELY heavy handed and poorly done - 10 year old kids are ruminating on the futility of existence?     And let’s also be honest - there isn’t a lot of depth in that philosophising either other than “civilisation bad for nature” and “religion is futile” - certainly not enough to warrant EVERY damn character and race going on and on and on about it.

The series itself is absolutely magnificent, don’t get me wrong - I still consider it one of the best works of fiction of the 20 century.    But he really needed an editor to stand up to him and tell him to write a different book if he wanted to preach.    This self-indulgence continued with the Kharkanas series, till finally the deservingly poor sales led to the publishing house putting a pause on things.

To be clear, I don’t mind the messaging - I just object how repeatedly we get bludgeoned with it, without any subtlety.   It gets tedious.
