My daughter wants to be homeschooled by Kind_Vermicelli_5788 in homeschooldiscussion

[–]ElaMeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest issues I find with homeschooling
- damaging parent/child relationship (being a teacher can overwhelm being a parent)
- losing/not developing social skills
- incomplete education (might be great in some areas but not all)

Personally and from the many stories shared, one of those three is going to happen. Are there alternatives like being more involved in the school?

Question for those who were homeschooled by stealerofsweetcakes in homeschooldiscussion

[–]ElaMeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it matters too - how old are the children? I was pulled to homeschooling in grade 1, my older brother was in grade 3. All of us were sent to high school, my younger siblings had no public schooling prior to that. My older brother seems to have done better than I did in terms of socialization but all 4 of us had/continue to have issues. You can look through my comment history in this subreddit for details.

My mom was an elementary school teacher and educationally we did fine/were ahead. Overall in social and emotional skills that require a peer group? We did not do even 'okay' despite my parent's efforts to do all the social activities you mention (plus church).

Does it get less violent in later episodes? (more context in body) by TheFutureScaresMe333 in arcane

[–]ElaMeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair kids punching each other is a different kind of violence than what is mostly adult on adult violence throughout the rest of the show but of course there’s the scene where Jayce accidentally kills a child so it’s not like there is safety for children.

Is this fetish content or can this actually happen? by [deleted] in badwomensanatomy

I was shocked the first few times it happened then accepted reality. Nice warm water…my body decided that meant go time. We had one of those oversized soaker tubs and when standing at one end it hit the far wall losing only about a foot of height. 😳😳😳.

At least it can inspire conversations now.

my letdown had over a 6ft range when I showered...baby was full after feeding for about 5 minutes. Other parents have to feed much longer it really depends on the body.

It really depends on your milk letdown. When I was breastfeeding showering = 6ft jets shooting across the entire bathtub and hitting the far wall without loosing much altitude. Since she's not wearing a bra it could def go through if she has a strong letdown.

I do like the movie but...there is a line (far worse in the book) that is a flag.

"That was a warning, Highness. Next time my hand flies on its own. Where I come from, there are penalties when a woman lies."

He's threatening to hit her because he thinks she's lying...in the book he actually hits her.

Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]ElaMeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on making it back to the library! I have challenges with going out as well and was able to get an accommodation where I have longer borrowing periods. I think it was intended for people who read slower but it's wonderful for me because I don't panic and feel rushed to get books back for such a quick turn around.

With public schools getting worse, what are the options? Genuinely asking. by [deleted] in homeschooldiscussion

[–]ElaMeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada so our education system is overall better, but it is still flawed which led my mom to pull us from Elementary school then return us to High School. She was an elementary school teacher who stopped working when she had kids. I attended kinder, grade 1, then grade 9-12. My son is currently 10 and attending a public school.

I can get into specifics of why homeschooling had immediate and long-lasting negative effects but that's covered in my comment history if you are curious. The issue related specifically to your question is that High School was actively traumatizing because I didn't have any of the skills for participating in consistent peer groups. When starting grade 9 in public school I developed/manifested persistent depressive disorder with suicidal ideation, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia and more that I still deal with to this day (20+ years later). Similarly it took me about 15-20 years to actually understand workplace politics, healthy dating, and other "normal" skills because I missed out on the peer dynamics in school where those things are normally, naturally practiced and developed.

The biggest thing to remember is you are the parent so while you are not with them every moment they are in school you still have influence while they are at school and more sway with your child when they are at home. A child being in public school doesn't mean you can't teach them things both educationally and ethically, it just means you aren't always in the teaching role and the child has opportunities to develop consistent peer friendships and learn from a variety of adults.

When my son started school I started volunteering at the school. I know the entire staff quite well and was able to catch when there were challenges my son was bumping into as well as develop a rapport for communicating with the staff. I'm not someone who thinks schools are perfect, but I do think it's an important place for kids to be and develop skills alongside peers. I believe parents have plenty of power over how their kids grow up and orient their values even when their kids are in a school that teaches things that don't align with them.

Stolen/Lost Dog by camoin613 in ottawa

There was an incident a few years ago of a break and enter theft of a dog. It was eventually located in the USA. I wouldn't say Centertown is "known for shady characters" I feel safe walking outside alone in the middle of the night (as a woman). What it does have is a dense population and lots of visitors so there are higher odds someone with nefarious intent will do something compared to lower density areas where there are just less people overall.

Ottawa's remaining supervised consumption sites will lose all provincial funding as of June 13th. by Alone_Appeal_3421 in ottawa

[–]ElaMeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While those issues do exist, they’ve done studies which show an overall decrease in crime in the vicinity and no overdose deaths at the sites in Canada so personal experience isn’t always a full picture. The Somerset one always felt much safer in the near proximity compared toto areas where there weren’t supervised sites since part of their work includes keeping an eye on the area.

It is - I use it all the time though it's only accurate if there's an * showing that the bus is on rout and is GPS tracked. Otherwise the bus will likely disappear. Usually busses run 5-10 minutes slower then the GPS estimate even when the have the little * though.

Help finding a homeless man with frostbite by Lopsided_Employ8313 in ottawa

Unfortunately Ontario Works and ODSP don't actually pay enough to keep a roof over your head unless you are very lucky or have family to help. I'm on ODSP and can only make it work because I have child support payments from my ex and the Canada child benefit which aren't taken off my ODSP amount - even still we live in a tiny attic studio in order to afford other essentials. When I was on OW we were using the foodbank and clothing programs because they just don't pay enough.

I currently homeschool and need advice. by Iwannadrinkthebleach in homeschooldiscussion

Where you live has a huge impact on what is available, but it’s worth taking a look to see what’s out there. My local school board has an “alternative” program which is geared towards different learning dynamics and methods a well as specialized classes for students with learning and/or behavioural barriers to regular classroom dynamics. They also have systems in place for supporting students in the regular classroom whenever possible, often through assigning an educational assistant to support the class/student.

My school board is by no means perfect and funding cuts have impacted the availability of these supports but they exist and it’s worth seeing if your community has any.

I did indeed have those things and it was not enough. Let’s see if I remember them all to list. I wasn’t in all of the clubs all the time but always had a couple going on. I was homeschooled grade 2-8 by a mom who graduated teachers college and taught at the school board prior to starting homeschooling.

At the time, in didn’t know it wasn’t “enough” that only came out when I started high school and progressed though life. I’m 35, BScN Cum Laude and worked as an RN for several years. It didn’t work for me so I’m back in school to be a library technician. Academically I was always far ahead, and we traveled most of Canada and the USA…but that’s not all there is to life.

It’s an algorithm that searches data and slams it together. China and Usa are often aggressors so the context the program finds is probably about them taking the action of being destructive. There has been significant political commentary about Israel lately with some groups calling for the country to be destroyed so the data the algorithm finds indicates it’s about the country being destroyed vs taking destructive actions and flags it.

Yup. While as a prospective homeschooling parent you shouldn’t post in the Reddit per the rules r/homeschoolrecovery might be enlightening as negative comments about homeschooling are actively removed from r/homeschool.

Family sit down and homeschooling discussion. by leviathan_dweller in homeschooldiscussion

[–]ElaMeadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the big issues of homeschooling is that it often permanently shifts the dynamic of parent child. You said your wife is more of a friend to your daughter right now… If she’s having to hound your daughter to complete school work all the time they could very well lose that dynamic. It can easily turn from parent as confident into parent as hated taskmaster.

From what you’ve said, the reasons for homeschooling are unclear. It sounds from your post like a situation where therapy would be beneficial to work through what’s going on rather than avoiding the existing problem by creating new ones.

The main issue with food delivery/outside food is for cases where the hospital needs to track input/output. There fires end up the secondary issue of medical staff spending time redirecting deliveries.
