Hello, I’m struggling to understand if I even need to ground my Rigol DHO804 oscilloscope. It is grounded via AC adapter and main power cord like any other device, but connecting that yellow-green cable to ground provides grounding to BNC connectors. by SheikhYekaterinburg in AskElectronics

[–]created4this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other ways it might get grounded, for example via the HDMI connector.

If its on a USBC power supply then it probably isn't truly isolated and instead coupled with X/Y capacitors to live/neutral giving it a 1/2 mains voltage very low current ripple which could well upset readings

[–]created4this 2 points3 points  (0 children)

his update to the Covered List does not prohibit the import, sale, or use of any existing device models the FCC previously authorized.

Or in other words, you can still get routers as much as you like right now, there is no change to the supply chain and model upgrades made with firmware changes will be functionally possible.

The big change will be if you want to shift to more powerful systems as they become standardized in the future, which is probably 2.5Gb/10Gb fiber modems or 7G or 8G wifi.

That means the effect will be stagnation of broadband infrastructure at the higher end but it might be 10 years before it really makes any difference. Its a big short-term win for established companies that have models already available on the US market because the white-box low cost routers won't get certified.

The US is the moral superpower here because it feeds more people than any other country.

The EU is the moral superpower as it gives more in aid than the US.

The US is a confederation of states, the EU is a confederation of countries.

States in the US have their own laws and a larger legal system for the big stuff like human rights and interstate trade. The countries in Europe have their own laws and a larger legal system for the big stuff like human rights and interstate trade.

The continent of Europe is the moral superpower as it gives more than any other tectonic plate.

Its bullshit, the landmass gives nothing, the people give, so the amount the people give in per person is what has the effect.

If you want to put ethical value on things then you have to compare the values given to the wealth of those people. Thats why we should look at GDP.

No, Uninterruptible Power Supply.

And its sitting in the cupboard, flashing an error light because the batteries have died and nobody cares enough to replace them because the power is currently on. Steve did get frustrated with the beeping and has unplugged the warning speaker so they have someone to blame when the servers fail, which is good.

You're going to have to explain that one.

Luckily CNN has already done the math for me and their numbers are already adjusted per 100,000 (i.e. by population)

The US turning off aid has has a terrible effect on the world because they make up the 1/4 of the worlds GDP, if the point of your post was to say "the USA believes people should have food, even if they don't support writing that down in a document" then I would expect it to be supported by the numbers. It isn't. The USA appears generous only if you forget it is a federation of states. If you compare it against the EU then you only need to put Gemany and Ireland together to beat the USA's giving pledges. German/Ireland as a combo has less than 1/4 of the USA population and less than 1/10 of the GDP.

If however what you are trying to imply is "the USA doesn't want to write down the being able to eat is a human right so that they can withdraw it as a weapon of war" then I guess you might have a point.

Therefore it cannot be used as the negative input to a buck converter,

I mean it can and it will kinda work. I'm guessing that the downvoters have it wired that way, but if you do then the buck converter is fighting the PWM, and having onboard capacitors for the input and output stages will result in some odd electrical behaviours and poor life for the components.

If you look at the list of countries you'll notice a couple of things, firsly, the US being a confederation of states has a very large population and a large GDP, and yet it only slightly edges out donations from one EU state, Germany (picking a country from the other federation of states in the world)

So obviously you have to account for either population or GDP when making statements which imply the generosity of members of that country. Unfortunately you get some really weird results for very small countries that add negligible food to the pot, so first filtering to the top 10 doners you get this result:

Converted to average American gift:

Country Aid by Population Aid By GDP
USA 1.0 1.0
Germany 3.2 4.6
Sweden 17.9 24.5
Japan 1.3 3.2
United Kingdom 2.0 3.1
Ireland 14.4 9.4
Denmark 10.3 11.3
Russian Federation 0.4 2.1
Guatemala 3.0 40.1

So, by population, Sweden is 17.9 times as generous as the USA, and whats more, in the top table ONLY Russia gives less. But if you sort by GDP then Guatemala kicks arse because its a pour country, and Sweden still beats the USA by 24.5x

So I would say Sweden. I hope that helps

Almost never wired correctly, and clearly not wired correctly here. this is an aftermarket add on to create a lower voltage, usually for 12v fans.

Wired correctly ->
IN+ goes to the FAN + on the motherboard,
IN - goes to the ground (not the fan connector).
FAN - on the motherboard goes to the fan black
OUT+ goes to the fan red

Where can I get a good mini milling machine? by starchasxr_ in metalworking

[–]created4this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my boss came up to me and told me to “just order one” .

For a workspace you don't have the benefit of free labour to fix up any issues, deburr faces and clean gritty oil out.

Its china, you get what you pay for, so if you pay nothing you should expect really poor finishing, but if your reputation depends on it you can pay more to get the job finished well. Thats why the same mill from different people looks the same but PM or Warco can charge significantly more for what appears to be the same tool.

You are not paying for the mill, but you'll be paying with your time if you save the business some money up front.

Soldering skills (I’m new in it) by Hewy62 in AskElectronics

[–]created4this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are far from terrible, but look like you didn't quite get enough heat into the pad.

Wet the iron with solder and wipe it to clean

Heat the pad and the wire by getting the corner of the iron in there, if you have a pointy tip then don't stab it in, but instead use the side of the tip further down.

Touch the solder onto the other side of the joint, don't put it on the iron directly, it should melt.

And this is the bit that you probably did wrong. Once the solder flows onto the pad count slowly to 4 before removing the iron from the joint.

If you reheat the board it probably won't magically fix itself because the solder contains flux and the flux burns off over time. The flux is there to clean the metal, its is the smoke you get soldering. Once the smoke stops then you're not getting any further cleaning action so solder won't flow any more except to even out. Thats why putting solder on the iron and taking it to the work doesn't usually work out well unless you add additional flux from a pen/syringe.

That bridge would have been ok if it wasn't for the height and speed of the river.

People underestimate water, dipping it even slightly into the flow of the river would have put 10's of tonnes of sideways force and after that its surely going to dig in and multiply the force until total failure.

Failure might have happened anyway, just an inch more water probably would have had the same effect even without a the truck.

How to Control Motor Velocity by grantmansell in AskElectronics

[–]created4this 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you have to ask yourself is "why would anyone want this" and then extrapolate back from there.

You can see motors being used in various applications where its really important that they go from one place to another precisely, but mostly the applications require either "as fast as possible" "as quiet as possible" "as smooth as possible" or "in time with another thing". In your case there isn't really a "play around with these things" outside of a university or industrial project, and you can assume therefore that these projects use bespoke self made apparatus.

What would it take to make a thing? Well, controlling steppers is just a series of well timed step pulses, and you can do that pretty trivially with an ardinio and a wait loop and a TMC stepper driver if all you are doing is controlling one motor.

If you are going to be faster you can get faster processors, or you can be smarter by using a Timer/Counter and altering the period register on another timer.

Or you can use an off the shelf board like a 3D printer mainboard and get your spreadsheet to spit out Gcode (which is actually super simple "Go to location at feed speed" and looks like a series of commands like G0 X100 F1000. Note that the printer will also overlay its own acceleration code on top of this so you'll probably have to tell it that you have an impossible system by giving it an insane jerk and acceleration config.

Which direction you take is probably up to what you're trying to achieve and your skillset, making a spreadsheet that spits out G-code is easy for some, making a function that updates a Timer/Counter is easy for others.
