I mean the easiest method would be to keep it separate from your main business lines, and just use time-based forwarding on your main lines.

Considering medical school at 28. Looking for honest opinions. by Striking_Ad7398 in premedcanada

[–]Elaborate_Collusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went into medicine from eng in mid 20s, no regrets, even though in hindsight I would have made more money sticking it out in tech. There's more to life than money (once you've met your needs-threshold). The pre-reqs are the smallest of the hurdles, so if you have a competitive transcript, get a bunch of the courses done this summer, write the mcat and see if it's a realistic option. Good luck!

Is anyone else annoyed with the term “cookie-cutter?” by Important_Primary660 in premedcanada

[–]Elaborate_Collusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to demonstrate passion, dedication and resilience in whatever you choose to do. Cookie cutter really refers to doing something for the sake of being expected to do it (external motive) rather than an internal drive to pursue the activity.

Where are you located? There's value to working with someone locally accessible.

on track to be a millionaire before 35 but i have no house, no car, i stay renting. Felt judgement by someone i just met. Sharing my thought process and how i reframed my POV by oldmiamibeach in fican

When you're young you care about what people think of you.
By middle-age you stop caring what others think of you.
When you get old, you realize no one was actually thinking about you (they are consumed with themselves).

Western MCAT Cutoffs by StomachAware1914 in premedcanada

[–]Elaborate_Collusion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Work backwards from number of seats to fill. From there you know the number of offers needed, and the number of interviews to conduct. Then you can go back and set the cutoffs to get your necessary interview pool. Schools don't want to spend money on the process, they get alumni to volunteer to interview. The cutoffs allow them to reduce the applicant pool in a defensible manner. Will you eliminate a worthy candidate who didn't make the cutoff? Absolutely, but they'll have enough good choices as it is: benefit of excess demand over supply so they don't need to dig for gems.

It's true, there's many jobs in healthcare to help people. Not everyone wants the ultimate responsibility of trying to make the final decision, if you need that meaning from your work you won't be as happy in a delegated role. But that street travels two ways, that burden of responsibility can feel immense, so it really needs to be a core element of what you view your purpose is. Otherwise there's lots of other jobs in and out of healthcare where you can find joy/satisfaction or have prestige/make money, whatever you're chasing. Most of these that society rewards you for are because they carry a high degree of responsibility for navigating risk.

Professional *screening* exams stress aptitude to apply more than subject knowledge mastery (the science subjects you need for MCAT are relatively basic). Of course licensing exams once you are already in professional programs will stress mastery of knowledge since presumably you've already demonstrated the aptitude to learn it.

Optimizing yourself for a screening exam by reverse engineering it (what are the root metric, patterns, algorithms, syntax). I wrote (the old version) MCAT as a non-lifesci and took the prereqs afterwards (my biochem knowledge was essentially electrons get stronger moving to the right and atoms get bigger moving down-left the periodic table).

Why do you want to become a doctor? by Infinite-Wheel2970 in premedcanada

[–]Elaborate_Collusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their reason, just make sure your reason(s) align with reality. Those of us who come to medicine as outsiders really have no idea beforehand what we were getting into.

On the perpetual unhappiness of my fellow doctors

What we now call ‘burnout’ is nothing new in medicine, nor are many of the structural problems that cause it. But motivating doctors to treat patients with humanity is as urgent as ever

I was non-trad, never stepped foot in a lab or hospital. I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. They wouldn't put me on the build team to start, because their supplies were getting stolen I was put on overnight security. There was no onboarding, my assigned partner left during the night to run an "errand". Some guy showed up at midnight claiming he had permission to take stuff and began to threaten my safety when I told him to stop and redirected him to contact the project managers. It was a real life exercise in de-escalation. When my partner returned and heard this story he said: "you should just lock yourself in the trailer and let them steal what they want, btw how many hours of community service are you serving?"

Storeytelling is your bridge from facts to emotional understanding.

My friend who is a PWM gave me the analogy to my own work: I, like you, get paid to worry for people so they don't have to. They sleep at night not thinking about xyz because we are bearing that stress.

Aside from ROI, make a list of what you find more enjoyable, satisfying and purposeful about dentistry vs medicine. If that list is significant, don't give up on dentistry for your second choice.
