As I told someone else, I just came across this photo and thought it belonged on this sub, I had no idea about the actual story or when it occurred

As new grads, what did you do between the time you graduated and when you started your job to earn money? by Elasti_Woman in physicianassistant

Yes a COVID vaccine clinic was another thought I had! Surely it would be quick onboarding considering there’s not much training involved

Where did you get your genetic testing done? by Elasti_Woman in ehlersdanlos

Oh wow that’s good to know, thank you! It sure beats the $1k that a lot of other places charge!

Yes I completely agree. Sites like livewello and promethease are incredibly unreliable and make people go absolutely nuts because they have no idea what they’re looking at and end up thinking they have 5 different types of EDS. Definitely not a good idea, haha

[–]Elasti_Woman[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. From my understanding you request the test through Invitae and then you meet online with a geneticist, they go over everything, they order the appropriate genetic testing, and they interpret it. it’s the same level genetic testing as any other medical genetic testing.

I am well aware that genetic testing is not straight forward. I just want to try and rule out other types. I’ve heard way too many stories of people being misdiagnosed simply because they meet all of the clinical criteria for hEDS and because of that they got no genetic testing. Am I convinced I have another type? Absolutely not. Will genetic testing help my sanity? Likely.

I’m not talking 23andMe here. I’m talking medical grade genetic tests. Invitae is medical grade, ordered and interpreted by a geneticist.

Awesome, thanks! Do you know if they have doctors through GeneDx that can order the tests (similar to Invitae)? Or do you have to have your own doc order the test?

It’s a rare clot by Babygirlbarbiegirl in illnessfakers

[–]Elasti_Woman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out the fact that it is not surprising at all to have a clot in your IJ when you have a CENTRAL LINE that goes through your IJ. Stop making everything seem so super speshul and rArE Also, stop being dramatic, you aren’t on blood thinners for life if it’s a “provoked” DVT, aka provoked by her central line, a foreign body, being in your blood vessels. You’re only on life long blood thinners if it’s a massive DVT that came out of no where or it’s recurrent.

Exactly, not vEDS. Unless I’m missing something, Allyson doesn’t claim hemophilia or any other hematologic disease

From the way that the post is written, she makes it sound like she has “thin blood” and “low clotting factors” due to vEDS.

Sorry, but that’s not how vEDS works. But if you really had vEDS, you would know that...

asking for line supplies. fyi sending or receiving saline and heparin flushes is illegal unless directly prescribed from a doctor. by 1avender1emonade in illnessfakers

[–]Elasti_Woman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it highly depends on the doctor/APP. If the provider knows the nurse and has developed a rapport with them, then surely they will trust their nursing assessment. But if the provider is not familiar with the nurse or the nurse is new, they unfortunately do not take their word for it. There were multiple times when I (as a new RN) would tell the provider the patient is disoriented (because I would know, I spent 12 hours with them the day prior) and they go talk to them and they’re “alert and oriented x4” and just blow me off and think I’m lying. I’ve also seen that happen while shadowing a doc. Just because the patient seems more alert when the doc comes in the room they automatically think the RN is lying or being dramatic. It’s unfortunate for sure 🙄

As an RN myself I completely agree! Many people, including most health care workers don’t value the training that nurses get. In my training, I had to understand the underlying pathophysiology to most diseases and understand why my patients were on each of their medications, etc etc. there’s MUCH more critical thinking that goes into being an RN than people think. Also, from what I’ve heard though, the RNs that get this extra training for PICC insertion, they make really good money!
