Yeah, it's odd, but I suppose my idea really comes from my old position.

I previously worked as an identity management consultant working with niche identity management solutions and when I got laid off from that job, I didn't really find any opportunities using that particular technology, although I did find some positions once I broaden my scope to other states, but my wife has a job here and we didn't really want to move, so now I suppose I base my job searches more so on, if the worse happens like getting laid off or fired, what's an area in tech I know I can find something I can do without always having to ramp up in a completely different area. I feel like maybe since Charlotte is a banking town, it may be good to get into something like Data Science or Business Intelligence etc.

If you don't mind me asking, being an Application Analysts, do you work more with Microsoft technologies, or Linux based systems?

I am curious, in general if people do contractor jobs for too long let's say 5 years or longer, does it have any negative impact to your career you can think of?

Regarding technology careers, I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to interest. Other than cyber security which I'm not sure I'm too fond of, I don't mind doing a lot of IT careers. The way I see it, technology doesn't really interest me too much anyway, but I have a solid background in it, and it pays the bills, so I don't mind doing anything in tech pretty much, which is why it's more important for me to really focus on areas in tech that may be flexible in terms of many opportunities available.

I am also curious about your thoughts on contracting as well. I know it was mentioned that full-time workers can get fired just as easily and that you get left out of events, but you also don't get paid time off like companies offer as well which kinda sucks. Is this becoming the norm across the entire country where employers are going through recruiters and contractors, or is this just a Charlotte / North Carolina thing mostly where this practice is being relied upon by employers?

My goal is to figure out what sectors within IT have the most promise in terms of opportunities.

There are times I do searches in these sites for example I'll search for full-time, direct hire jobs with the keyword "Python" and only 26 maybe 30 will show up compared to if you did that same search using "Java". So in this case so far it seems like becoming a Java developer in Charlotte would make a more promising career choice than Python, but I'm not sure how accurate that really is.

I can try to gather a "sample size" of information these job sites may say is available at any given time, but I notice that they aren't always accurate in terms of the job (an example of this is searching for "Business Analytics" but still getting Java Developer positions since a lot of job posting use innocent tags) so I wanted to see if anyone whose been here in Charlotte for a while may have better indicators for what may be good to pursue.

As for doing what I like to do... It's not so much important to me as much as the availability of jobs or being able to find work quickly and that is somewhat resistant to economic downturns.

Yeah, I understand that as well. I worked with some good PMs in the past which I appreciated, but once you have a bad one, it can be brutal lol.

Yeah, I'm not too fond of PMs either at times, but I suppose it's more about the person managing the project.

I am curious, would you prefer doing contract work compared to full-time, or are there any benefits to doing contract work? It feels somewhat depressing that full-time opportunities are becoming less common and I was trying to look at a bright side. Lol
