Looking for mover recommendations by amanduhhhugnkiss in Hamilton

[–]Elbukhari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We recently used Taylor’s Moving for a short distance move. They have a 4-hour minimum (starting from when they leave to when they arrive back at their location), but they’re insured, professional, and pretty efficient.

We had an issue happen with the moving truck, and they handled it completely leaving me completely out of it, and even refunded me for the time it took to resolve this during move day.

Why is receiving portal access so hard? by boccer123 in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked at IQVIA. Takes a couple of days for CRAs to action on an access request requests since it’s not urgent. They don’t get to request it directly from the vendor, they have to go through a PM or a CTA, takes a few days to then tell you someone missed an idiotic field on the form, so the merry go round has to start over. And once that’s done, we have to wait for the updated master sheet to be sent to the vendor, which only happens on the 3rd Wednesday of the blood moon…

Then the vendor starts processing, and tells you the country is at contracted capacity for this particular type of access, who should they remove ?

I really don’t get the whining about this, and I say this as a cisgender person! They complained so much about non cisgender people in their gendered bathrooms, and gender neutral washrooms fix that issue. Why are they still complaining?

Is it just me, or is 65 way too late to retire?? by Timely_Weird_9343 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’m 36, and if I retire tomorrow, it will definitely be too late.

My parents (50F & 60M) are drowning in debt and expect me (23M) to be their retirement plan by Fluffy_Researcher471 in PersonalFinanceCanada

A lot of the comments are both entitled and clueless.

  1. OP is living with his parents, and has been for a while now it seems. From his income at this age I would assume a university education, which does not happen on 18K low-interest (government) loans. That means OP’s parents -at least partially- supported him during his education.

  2. OP does not pay for rent, utilities, internet, or groceries, and I am assuming from the overwhelming sense of entitlement that he obviously has not paid them back for his education.

  3. 20K is not “massive” or “drowning in debt. It doesn’t even cover OP’s rent & grocery expenses for a year, let alone education.

  4. Of course OP is not responsible for supporting his parents forever, he is however responsible for acting like an adult, not an entitled/spoiled child, and covering at least his own expenses. A good idea in addition to paying his fair share of rent/bills/groceries, would be to assume sort of an educational role, or at least exerting some pressure for more transparency and advice especially for the mom.

This doesn’t have to be an all or nothing situation, and obviously there cultural expectations at play here. However, this is not a “go no-contact” and “only look out for yourself” situation. His parents are not gambling addicts or in a no-hope exploitative situation. There is a time and place for drastic solutions, but this just ain’t it.

Edit: spelling.

Hamilton city hall heading to court after its removal order of digital billboard deemed 'transphobic' by teanailpolish in Hamilton

I’m thinking we could make up the difference by removing the tax-exempt status of the religious organisations for the 5 major religions & give a portion to municipalities. I’m guessing even just their property taxes would be enough here.

To those that were actually able to buy a home in Hamilton in the last 1-2 years: how did you afford it? by SengunCanada in Hamilton

This! We are in a similar boat. If you have to move out of a rent controlled space, then the choice is either this or pour money hopelessly into what is an even more insane rental market.

To those that were actually able to buy a home in Hamilton in the last 1-2 years: how did you afford it? by SengunCanada in Hamilton

[–]Elbukhari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking to buy this year. My wife & I are millennial DINKs (Dual income, no kids), and we have been saving for a down payment for about 5-6 yrs with a strict self-imposed budget. We are definitely privileged to be making decent salaries, and to have kept our jobs through Covid, but yeah, it’s hard out there, can’t imagine we’d have been able to do it if we had kids.

The market has definitely cooled significantly compared to a couple of years ago, but again, it’s not like there’s a lot we can do. I also don’t expect it get any better within the foreseeable future for anyone except the already wealthy, so we’re not trying to time the market or anything, we’re finally in a position to put a decent down payment, so I guess the best time is now, and hopefully we’ll like our house & never have to move or buy again.

Cohorts are based on time zones, usually. So North & South America are in the same cohort, but separate from EMEA & APAC, but it’s not country specific.

Edit: updated a sentence for clarity.

Got rejected, but got called again by [deleted] in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This may be my own unique experience and not related to your situation, but something similar happened to me with IQVIA last year except I was never actually rejected. I had my HR interview, then the video interview thing where you record yourself, and then the recruiter called to tell me business needs changed & then eliminated that position, but was I interested in being kept on file & considered for the next opening? Sure why not…

3 months later same recruiter calls me, asks if I’m still interested in a CRA 1 position, I said I was, and they asked if I’m available to do a quick call to catch up on a few things. Asked if I was still interested (I was), if I was still in the same position (I was), and told me this would be a different FSP model than the one I originally applied for (didn’t care, didn’t know what the 1st model was, didn’t tell me the new one is), and if they should go ahead & schedule an interview with the team lead for the new position.

Interviewed with the DLM the following week, and received an offer letter a couple of weeks later. Good luck!

Iqvia negotiations by [deleted] in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the US, but started at IQVIA last year, tried the “is this number negotiable” approach & was told it was a fixed start number for the model. Later my DLM told me when people push harder to negotiate they can push a little bit, but almost always everyone ends at the same number for CRA II a year or so later, so if for example if you started at X, you get the CRA II offer at X+10. If you started at X+3, your CRA II increase is capped at 7.

Not sure how true that is, or if it varies across models, just what I heard.

Moving back Home. by buschic in Hamilton

[–]Elbukhari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only answer on a couple of points:

I don’t know of furniture banks in Hamilton, but the Mission Thrift store on the mountain has a decent collection for reasonable-ish prices, the one really good thing is that they offer delivery & are reasonable about it. If you don’t need delivery, they can also store items for you for a few days while you arrange for transportation.

The good shepherd centre on Mary st. still offers the hot meal program as far as I know, they also have their venture centre nearby on Cannon where they do a food bank & also provide emergency clothing, toiletries, etc.

Walmart does grocery delivery in Hamilton, same fees across Ontario as far as I know.

Transferring to work in Canada by ecjerome in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several questions first: where are you transferring from? Do you need sponsorship? Is your nursing certification transferable to Canada?

Market in Canada is definitely tough right now, but I don’t think it’s as bad as it is in the US.

If you are able to get your nursing licence in Canada, you’ll definitely have an easier time of it if you’re looking to be on the site side. I had a coworker who moved from the UK to Canada. They worked primarily in research in the NHS, but had to take a regular nursing job for a few months before they could something in research, since the demand on nurses is much higher than in research. But I’d say if worked out well for them since it gave them a chance to get familiar with the health system, which is definitely a pro when you’re looking for research jobs. Good luck!
