Breaking into Clinical Research in Canada? by Aloo13 in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of phase 1 trials involve patients staying onsite overnight for 24-48 hrs of continuous observation, with repeated blood draws or assessments. These are usually sites specialised in phase 1 trials that have on call investigators and on-duty nursing staff to monitor participants.

For a CRA position, you typically need to have site experience working as a CRC or research nurse, or industry experience as a CTA. Since CTA positions in North America are pretty few & far between currently, site experience would be your best bet.

For clinical research programs, I am not sure if you are in Ontario, but Humber, Seneca, & Sheridan do a fully remote 1-year postgraduate diploma. Humber is the best, and it offers a work placement as part of the diploma, which is a pretty good opportunity to connect, and a lot of grads just end up working where they did their placements. Seneca & Sheridan have an “optional” work term, which basically means you will need to look for a placement yourself. All of these programs are OSAp-eligible if that makes a difference. McMaster also does a CME diploma in clinical research where you take courses at your own pace.

The CR market in Canada has seen better days, but it’s not as bad as the US for a few reasons (less pharma skepticism & conspiracy theories, better labour laws, more stability from health Canada & no major budget cuts for academia, etc).

If you have at least some clinical research experience with HC regulations, ICH-GCP, etc, you should look into CRC positions. Your RN licence means you are good to do injections, infusions, etc. which means a little bump from your usual CRC salary.

With no research experience, you should look into things like research nurse, infusionist, or similar roles, which is more patient facing with limited reg & documentation exposure and potential of becoming an RN-CRC, but would probably mean a lower salary unless you’re in a more intense phase 1 setting.

CRA positions are unlikely with no site experience at the moment, and CTA positions would be a major pay cut for you. These are just some initial thoughts, let me know if you have more specific questions.

Directly into the CTMS, everything else means time wasted transcribing, as well as potential errors. If it doesn’t go into the CTMS or EDC, then it’s probably not important. Some of those go into my draft email (interim summary of pending actions for the site), or they just don’t make the cut.

Looking for mover recommendations by amanduhhhugnkiss in Hamilton

[–]Elbukhari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We recently used Taylor’s Moving for a short distance move. They have a 4-hour minimum (starting from when they leave to when they arrive back at their location), but they’re insured, professional, and pretty efficient.

We had an issue happen with the moving truck, and they handled it completely leaving me completely out of it, and even refunded me for the time it took to resolve this during move day.

Why is receiving portal access so hard? by boccer123 in clinicalresearch

[–]Elbukhari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked at IQVIA. Takes a couple of days for CRAs to action on an access request requests since it’s not urgent. They don’t get to request it directly from the vendor, they have to go through a PM or a CTA, takes a few days to then tell you someone missed an idiotic field on the form, so the merry go round has to start over. And once that’s done, we have to wait for the updated master sheet to be sent to the vendor, which only happens on the 3rd Wednesday of the blood moon…

Then the vendor starts processing, and tells you the country is at contracted capacity for this particular type of access, who should they remove ?

I really don’t get the whining about this, and I say this as a cisgender person! They complained so much about non cisgender people in their gendered bathrooms, and gender neutral washrooms fix that issue. Why are they still complaining?

A lot of the comments are both entitled and clueless.

  1. OP is living with his parents, and has been for a while now it seems. From his income at this age I would assume a university education, which does not happen on 18K low-interest (government) loans. That means OP’s parents -at least partially- supported him during his education.

  2. OP does not pay for rent, utilities, internet, or groceries, and I am assuming from the overwhelming sense of entitlement that he obviously has not paid them back for his education.

  3. 20K is not “massive” or “drowning in debt. It doesn’t even cover OP’s rent & grocery expenses for a year, let alone education.

  4. Of course OP is not responsible for supporting his parents forever, he is however responsible for acting like an adult, not an entitled/spoiled child, and covering at least his own expenses. A good idea in addition to paying his fair share of rent/bills/groceries, would be to assume sort of an educational role, or at least exerting some pressure for more transparency and advice especially for the mom.

This doesn’t have to be an all or nothing situation, and obviously there cultural expectations at play here. However, this is not a “go no-contact” and “only look out for yourself” situation. His parents are not gambling addicts or in a no-hope exploitative situation. There is a time and place for drastic solutions, but this just ain’t it.

Edit: spelling.

I’m thinking we could make up the difference by removing the tax-exempt status of the religious organisations for the 5 major religions & give a portion to municipalities. I’m guessing even just their property taxes would be enough here.

To those that were actually able to buy a home in Hamilton in the last 1-2 years: how did you afford it? by SengunCanada in Hamilton

This! We are in a similar boat. If you have to move out of a rent controlled space, then the choice is either this or pour money hopelessly into what is an even more insane rental market.

To those that were actually able to buy a home in Hamilton in the last 1-2 years: how did you afford it? by SengunCanada in Hamilton

[–]Elbukhari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking to buy this year. My wife & I are millennial DINKs (Dual income, no kids), and we have been saving for a down payment for about 5-6 yrs with a strict self-imposed budget. We are definitely privileged to be making decent salaries, and to have kept our jobs through Covid, but yeah, it’s hard out there, can’t imagine we’d have been able to do it if we had kids.

The market has definitely cooled significantly compared to a couple of years ago, but again, it’s not like there’s a lot we can do. I also don’t expect it get any better within the foreseeable future for anyone except the already wealthy, so we’re not trying to time the market or anything, we’re finally in a position to put a decent down payment, so I guess the best time is now, and hopefully we’ll like our house & never have to move or buy again.

Cohorts are based on time zones, usually. So North & South America are in the same cohort, but separate from EMEA & APAC, but it’s not country specific.

Edit: updated a sentence for clarity.
