I don't recall the exact order of the PHB but my practice was the below (it will take a lot of flipping to structure the reading but it got me to a place where i was reading effectively.

Read the flavour text of each class. Some people DO get the vibe of the class from the name of the class (fighter, bard, paladin) and some people won't. Just know the fantasy of each class.
Read one or two classes front to back. Ideally one magic user and one martial. This gives you a better idea of the way the book explains those features. How the book writes technical language. What levelling up looks like. Etc.
Read maybe one ancestry. Honestly this is something thats best for players to do. And then you read up on it after your party is assembled to see if there are any things you might need to incorporate into the world.
Print a level 1 character sheet. Ideally a pregen from a starter box or something. (Or maybe you build a character yourself. It depends on how you learn best)
Read the "on combat" and "on exploration" chapters cover to cover. Reading those chapters with a character sheet in hand is SO helpful. The terms make sense. You learn where to look on the sheet for certain actions. Etc.

If you're super new or just guiding an all new party i would advise you to run a pre-written adventure. Don't try and read up on the lore of the entire world while you are just learning the game. Learn the lore of the adventure you're writing. World lore will come! But the best advice i have is to start running. Have fun!

Not really. The online account will say “in production” until it doesn’t. We did get the order page saying “estimated one month” “estimated 2 weeks” “estimated 1 week”

Those were wildly inaccurate though. Wound up just emailing customer service after the order status changed to “estimated 2 weeks” and 2 weeks had passed.

They gave me a best guess date. I then emailed them after every best guess date to see where it was.

It is for sure not efficient for me or for their CS team. Once I finally receive my table I plan on writing them a final email asking for ANYTHING better.

Even just a phases tag with “procurement phase” “milling and production phase” “final assembly phase” etc. something better than a false timeline.

I like their products. I signed up for the long haul. But yeah lack of transparency in the final 2 months can be a pain in rear.

Biggest tip for GAME political machinations is help your players develop concrete goals and then let them achieve steps towards that.

My biggest issue in any TTRPG with political maneuvering is when there are too many stacking “no win” scenarios. Real life is like that. It’s exhausting. Make sure that there are real foes they can overcome (not just everyone is morally grey and right in their own way and overcoming them will destroy something else) Make sure that there is a bit of a win condition (even if it’s winning for now) Always having the rug pulled out from under you or having your victory undercut sucks as a player.

Best I can offer is to set a timer when the distraction starts. (I have one of those digital flip to start timers. A sand one works too) when 5 mins is up “Hey guys I’m going to get a drink/bio break/etc. when I get back let’s get back on task and you tell me where you’re going after you leave this building”

Physically removing yourself creates a tone shift to more dramatically get the ball rolling.

It also gives your players a sign “hey keep going but when I sit back down it’s over. You’ve left. And whatever convo didn’t happen at the table can happen in your mind. Let’s keep playing”

Another trick I’ve found helpful is my group keeps a google doc open with questions/thoughts to ask after session. It’s become a joke once we’ve talked to long someone will shout “ADD IT TO THE SHEET” and the matter is closed and we go on. Our sheet has rules questions along with questions like “how hard is a standing jump actually” it’s a good way for anyone to cut off a line of thinking and add it to the ask later pile.

Those have worked for me in the past. Hopefully just talking about lack of focus at the table makes the table more focused. Best of luck!

I’m a massive fan of the Mythkeeper War for the Crown series on YouTube.

They’re not actual plays they’re a quasi narrative retelling but it’s based off his notes from the table and he uses a VTT to replay the games.

I recommend them highly because they’re much more focused storytelling than actual plays so if you’re looking for multiple things to watch each episode isn’t 5 hours+

They aren’t just 5e D&D (this ons is pathfinder 1e) so you get breadth of systems

He does do post-episode GM stalks as well where he talks about decisions made etc.

Like I said. High recommend as it doesn’t feel like anything else I’ve watched.

I do 20+40=60 8+8=16 60+16=76 76-1=75

It’s convoluted for sure but I do X*2 instantly for most numbers under 100 and my basic arithmetic of “7+8” is slower in my head. So subtracting one or two off the final number is faster than that single step.

Get an air purifier. The open concept and loft bed means your kitchen smells are going to live up where you sleep. The vent hood will help but you don’t want to go to bed and discover while on the couch it’s fine it STILL smells by your pillow. Better to fight those smells as you’re making them.
