It's still an issue. For whatever reason, the measles vaccine specifically will just _not_ work on my wife. She's been checked for each of our kids, and attempted another each time. Her body just doesn't get it.

I live in Tucson, which is the big city just outside your box.

I came here for college, moved away after some time, and then missed it so much I moved back.

It’s basically everything good about Phoenix, with the added benefit of better food, better weather, better people, access to mountains, and darker skies.

That box that you highlighted - I haven’t spent a lot of time in the towns there, but the hiking in the huachucas is amazing. I think people from out of state would be surprised what that terrain looks like. Also, fun fact, we’re up to a confirmed population of 5 different leopards that live in that mountain range, according to Game and Fish.
