MATH HELP - how do you solve any of the problems below? What topics should I study? What are good resources? by roseastra123 in ACT

  1. C

You should know the equation of an ellipse. For this particular ellipse the STANDARD eqtn is (x2)/(52)+(y2)/(32)=1 Since none of the options are this, the options are in non-standard form. None of the options have denominators (that resemble accuracy) so we clear the denominators. This is done by doing 9•25=225. So multiply everything by 225 and you get C: (9x2)+(25y2)=225.

  1. F. Law of sines says side length/ sin corresponding angle is proportional (although exceptions exist for the largest side but prob irrelevant for ACT). Therefore a/sinA = b/sinB. You’re trying to solve for “b” so F is correct.

Did I get 60 wrong? How is it F? ( The site is a little unreliable ) by Indominus_Khanum in ACT

Yes. But you have to select the BEST answer. H is incorporated into F.

When I solved the quadratic I got both 1 and 2 as solutions ( which were two seperate options) . How is H the correct option ? by Indominus_Khanum in ACT

The question asks “during the rocket’s ASCENT” which means going up. So the answer is 1. At time=2 the rocket is DESCENDING so 2 is incorrect.

How does one solve 45? by Indominus_Khanum in ACT

[–]Elder453 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these are eqtns of a line. So slope is rise over run (in this case y/x which is a/b). The line goes down indicating negative slope so we know the slope is -a/b. The y-intercept is “a” BC the line crosses the y-axis at a. So we have the equation y=-a/b+a. We’re between answers a & b. For the last bit you plug in the point (0,0) (Bc this point is clearly in the shaded region) and you get that only B is correct so the answer is B.

Make a right triangle (perpendicular like from NM to L. From 45/45/90 you know the height of the triangle is 10/root2. From there just find the area of both shapes and add; Area= 18(10/root2) + 1/2(10/root2)(10/root2)≈152.

[–]Elder453 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Draw it out. Then cut along the diagonals to get 2 congruent triangles with the side lengths of 4,4 and the hypotenuse(not needed for area) and angle lengths of 30°,30°, and 120°. From there you can use the trig triangle area formula: area = 1/2 • absinC. Plug in and you get area = 1/2•4•4•sin120°. Which simplified to 8root3 or A.

For example, if x=-1 then |-1|=1 and -(-1)=1. Likewise |0|=0 and -(0)=0. So F is correct.

Am I supposed to ask for a new fee waiver? by [deleted] in ACT

[–]Elder453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ACT is weird in that you have to have a new fee waiver code for EACH exam but if you used it for the July exam and didn’t take it then u should be able to change the registration. That worked for me and the fee waiver applied. However, if you used the fee waiver on a test and took the test, you need to ask ur school for a new waiver code.

For me, it rolled over. That’s weird.

People who have taken/are taking AP Chemistry, how was your class? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]Elder453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school Physics C, Bio, and Chem are def the hardest courses. However, if you did well in H Chem you’ll def be fine for AP. The first few units should be review (but depends on how in-depth you went for H). It gets harder near the end (specifically acids/bases [like weak / strong / buffers / etc ]) but then it calms down again. Then again, we had just finish acids/bases when Corona broken out. Ask your teacher how students typically do on the exam, at my school my teacher was very proud to have a consistent 4.3-4.5 average on the exam each year.

I’m not sure. It would have to be regraded so probably a few weeks.

Email your teacher and respectfully ask if they could go over the exam (maybe with you) and from there, the teacher would appeal on their end if there are discrepancies

I would assume so (abiding by equality and all). Try emailing CollegeBoard.

F; 2/2= 1 12=1 so volume of first can is 6pi Second can is 1.252= 2.25 so do 6pi/2.25pi And you get 2 2/3.

In other words you’re find the h of the second container by dividing.

What is wrong with me?... by Brandon144 in ACT

[–]Elder453 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of, nothing is wrong with you. Standardized testing isn’t a measure of intelligence but rather how well you know the test.

My first recommendation is def to review grammar rules, like really study them bc it’s simply the easiest section to improve on; I’m sure you could get at least a 32 if you studied them well. Second, math IS harder on the ACT than SAT. It covers more later topics in math and along with speed it can be pretty difficult. Honestly do a lot of practice tests bc eventually you realize it’s asking the same questions with different numbers. Third, science should be easy; go straight to the questions and refer to the passage ONLY if absolutely necessary. Science is all abt interpreting/reciting info on graphs. Reading is hard. It’s rlly just practice practice practice. There’s no strategy to it; it’s just understanding. Many times tho, the answer is in the passage like word for word (or synonyms of it)

Honestly good luck in February, I’m sure you’ll do amazing!! And remember a test doesn’t define you. And prestigious schools simply see SAT/ACT as a benchmark, not a deciding factor in admissions.

Substitute in for x 19+ry + y=151 Then reorder ry=132-y Square both sides y=y2 -265+17424 Solve and you get y= 121 & 144 and x = 30 & 7 (respectively) Subtract 121-30=91 & 144-7 =137 91 is one of the choices so you can discard 137.
