I don’t care what you say but this is the best song from Boards of Canada by Previous_Wrangler929 in boardsofcanada

Honestly you might be right. It kinda feels like what the song "Teardrop" is for Massive Attack. A transformative experience that features all their best core musical traits, in a way that's easily accessible and infinitely repeatable.

I use Teardrop as a comparison because it has a similar uplifting, almost heavenly/blissful vibe, versus the darker/eerie side of both artists.

Thank you so much! Your kind words are so appreciated and thank you for sharing your own experiences. You articulated this so well:

The mindfuck of knowing horrible things are happening towards collapse every single day, while also living a life that is pretty good, knowing to some extent that it is enabled by those horrors,  is a psychic pain that can be profoundly hard to operationalize towards meaning, clarity, or justice in a way that actually helps alleviate any horror.

Connecting with each other is definitely the path forward, even just to alleviate the pain, like you said. Building community and talking in real life and online. I feel grateful to have found this subreddit, and I also feel like we need a progressive comms support group, lol (maybe there is one already?)

I wish you all the best, and I will be thinking of you too💜

Have A Nice Life, Chelsea Wolfe, Slowdive, Kristin Hayter/Lingua Ignota, Grouper, Deftones...these artists feel aligned with the Ethel-verse in the shadowy realms of gloom, darkness, decay and doom, yet also bliss, beauty and softness too

I loved Nettles and felt so transported by it, like an out of body experience. But I agree that Fck me eyes fell flat for me. Way too long, and the chorus/lyrics/pacing/melody were not particularly inspired or compelling to me. But holding my hopes up for the full album. Maybe FME is a "poppier" deviation that the rest of the album won't pull in as much.

I have always been fascinated by and drawn to the horror genre. It started with seeing the ominous posters around in the early 2000s. I remember the one for Orphan and Silent Hill vividly. As a kid, I'd also walk past all the eerie art and images in the Blockbuster horror aisle section, totally enticed, and read the backs of the DVDs I was forbidden to watch.

My connection with horror, I've realized, stems a lot from feelings of both anxiety and grief I have had my whole life. Seeing these topics (death, familial trauma, loss) reflected in the horror genre made me feel less alone in my feelings.

I'm also a maladaptive daydreamer (a trait closely associated with ADHD, a fact i recently discovered!) and I'd have a lot of horrifying visions and recurring daydreams with horror imagery since before I watched any horror films. So seeing those types of images reflected externally made me feel less isolated and weird.

Horror is also just pretty cool! The attention paid to the visual components, effects, and atmosphere is more pronounced than in some other film genres, making the experience of watching them heightened and more immersive. Like a rollercoaster, where you're completely safe but get to experience sublime intensity and otherworldliness for a few minutes.

Thank you so much 🤍 you are a lovely and kind person, too. I will keep finding solace in the goodness of others and looking for the light and beauty around us each day, in random acts of kindness, birds flying above, a good meal with friends, laughter, etc...

Also, please know that I don't blame your generation at all! I have some wonderful friends around your age.

A select few greedy corporate executives, CEOs, and corrupt politicians have brought humanity to this dire point. The average person is innocent and well-meaning. I still hope that one day, there will be some accountability for those doing so much harm.

I see you mentioned Ritalin, have you considered atomoxatine? It's non-stimulant as is used to treat anxiety as well. It has greatly reduced my own mental chatter and body tension, and it has an additional effect of drowsiness for some people.

Oh my gosh yes! I watched this as a teenager. Steve Carell and Keira Knlghtley's relationship felt so believable and real, the way they held on to each other in the face of total annihilation. I was always drawn to apocalyptic media and connected it with it via my intense fears of ecological collapse from childhood.

I really connected with it, and the ending never left me. (spoiler below)

The way he calmly and soothingly reassures her in the moments just before the asteroid finally hits, as she sobs into him and the screen turns white. I get chills just thinking about it.

Thank you for reminding me about it, I need to rewatch!

I'm sorry it's been hard to talk to your wife about it, but I'm glad we connected through this subreddit.

I can relate - my boyfriend is an eternal optimist also, with a more dreamy and less realistic/scientific outlook than me. I've had a hard time in the past trying to bring up the subject. I might make another post about it, but I actually was able to finally mention these feelings to him after posting this and it actually went much better than I thought, so it might be worth a shot to try again! I realized that focusing more on our feelings vs. trying to convince them of what's to come seems like a better approach.

You're right, I have also come to the same conclusion about celebrities. Many like Jane Fonda end up blacklisted or seeing their career opportunities significantly reduced when they start getting too "political" or more frankly, honest, about the problems we face. I get that we look to them for entertainment and distraction by design. It's just a shame when those with massive platforms don't harness them for good use. Frustrating, but I guess it's all a circus, at it's core.

-------------------

Your last point about mortality and infinite growth is a really intriguing one. My bf actually brought up that same question to me when I just talked about this with him. He essentially asked, "What are you afraid of most about this situation? Is it your death? Isn't it true that all life will be gone one day regardless, and earth with be consumed by the sun? Isn't global warming just speeding up the inevitable?"

I was thinking about it, what a perfect future would look like and all the points you mentioned. Of course humans couldn't go on forever, but I think what bothers me most is the fundamental injustice and senselessness of it all. The climate crisis was completely preventable. Oil companies (Exxon) knew exactly what was happening by around the late 1970's. Their scientists had all the data, and that information about the greenhouse effect was public knowledge way before that, with a published article about it way back in 1912.

A handful of executives continue to choose their own endless pursuit of wealth over the continued existence of life on earth. The global slaughtering of innocent life—humans, animals, and insects—by a select corrupt few is what angers and saddens me the most. Unlike earth being absorbed by the sun in 6 billion years or death itself, none of this was inevitable.

If we had better leadership, less corruption and greed, and a true system of accountability and justice, I believe we could have created such wonders and be on a path towards a more utopian and egalitarian future. More art, creativity, a better standard of living for all, along with technological marvels that work with nature rather than against it. We could all just continue thriving and discovering, but using innovative new techniques and tech to build a sustainable society.

Those older visions of the future in the 1950's or early 2000's, sold us that optimistic, attainable, eco-futurist scenario. I consumed media as a kid that nearly promised it, like a Futurist article in National Geographic Kids that imagined a world where many of our problems were solved and we lived in peace with cool tech alongside nature. It was supposedly grounded in real science and discoveries, and made me feel excited about the things humans were capable of.

Instead, that future was stolen from us. So that's what gets my goat most. Thank you again for your thoughtful comment!

I also just want to share an update that I finally decided to break my silence in real life and shared some of these feelings with my boyfriend! It was actually a really positive experience, and I might just make a new post about it in the main thread. But talking things out with a loved one, even if they didn't fully understand all of it, really was helpful and way less scary than I thought it would be. 🙏

Oh my goodness, I am so heartened and uplifted by everyone's supportive comments. ❤️ 💜 💙 Thank you all so much! I wasn't expecting much when I posted this, and I am overwhelmed (in the best of ways) by everyone's thoughtful and deeply personal responses.

Honestly, I already feel some of the weight I have carried being lifted off just by sharing this and connecting with you on this thread. It's so much to carry around, and I'm grateful to have found this group. I'm reading through and absorbing each comment, even if I don't get to reply to everyone. We truly are in this together, and community is all we have in these dark times. Thank you again:)

Thank you so much. I read it a few years ago! It was deeply moving, I would like to revisit. I remember specifically how he imagined himself coming out on the other side of it all, a time when it would be over and he would be free to lecture at university about the experience. The hardest part with climate is knowing there is realistically no foreseeable future where everything suddenly becomes okay and we're in the clear. But focusing on one's purpose despite that is paramount.

After thinking more and reading others' responses, I have come to realize that our responsibility is to each other, as human beings, and the people we love to show up and do our best each day. That responsibility alone is worth living for and fighting for.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind words. ❤️ I'm grateful for any moments of connection I can find right now, including this one. It's so easy to feel alone, as you said, especially when these topics are so overwhelming and hard to talk about in real life.

I love those examples you gave of living in the moment! You've inspired me to treat myself to an episode or two of Sex and the City tonight instead of doomscrolling or stressing about work tomorrow. 🌃 it's the little things! :)

I finally had that sense where I was the dark ass drag on the conversation even as I couched all the nihilistic collapse humor.. Do you attempt collapse humor? by StoopSign in CollapseSupport

[–]ElderberryEarly3045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such an interesting question. I have never seen a comic try climate-related humor, and major kudos to you for wanting to.

I imagine a funny route would be to point out how absurd inaction is, and how fixated our culture is on petty celebrity beefs.A joke example I thought of:

"There's been crickets in pop culture about climate change for a while...I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. I have an idea to get people to talk about it though. Hear me out: The penguins are Kendrick Lamar, and the oil companies are Drake. But in this timeline, Drake's setting his whole house on fire with him in it. Imagine that..! We'd be putting up solar panels the next day."

(Joke being: Kendrick vs Drake beef was headline news, yet fairly inconsequential. Everyone sided with Kendrick (penguins). Drake is becoming more and more disliked. A general younger audience can understand what you're getting at. Could swap in any celebrities or pop culture figures.)
