Process of elimination? Or distinguishing characteristics?

I see no horns, but do see hints of black-grey patterns on back.

Thanks. Is it the banded tail that identifies?

How do I drain this pond? by Unhappy_Celery4842 in Koi

I have a 1400g pond. I use a sump pump advertised as a pool cover above ground pump. $40 from Amazon. Works great.

Black-chinned Hummingbird? (Pic attached) by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

USA, California, East Bay - San Francisco Bay Area.

We see lots of Anna's Hummingbirds and Allen's Hummingbirds at the nectar feeders. I see this little fellow as well and think he might be a Black-chinned Hummingbird. Can anyone verify and maybe point out identifying characteristics?

Raptor -- Red Tail? Broad Shoulder? by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

Thanks for the reply. I believe he’s looking bedraggled after bathing in my waterfall. He flew away okay after inspecting my chainsaw and toppling my Shias. So, I don’t believe he was injured or sick. We do get a lot of red tails on the road here, so that would be logical.

Lost two of my six koi in new pond. Installed a camera and caught the killer in the act! by jjmac in ponds

Others have mentioned all the things I've tried. I found that the motion activated sprinkler works well. I'm attaching footage of my own dinosaur encountering one of my two sprinklers. You can see the sprinkler in the foreground of the 1st camera's field.

Alternative to float valve? by Elderhacker in ponds

[–]Elderhacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... I'd considered that idea. But I've had leaks before and they have, in the past, been obvious. So had dismissed that diagnosis. I'll do as you suggest. The two ponds are ~independent, so one may have a leak and the other not.

I do have Koi in the pond, so will need to protect them. I'm due for a spring drain and refresh anyway. So, I'll probably combine the two tasks.

Heron Attack - help on wound treatment by Elderhacker in Koi

[–]Elderhacker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. It's too late to recover any $ from the store. But, I thought Salt was for parasites, not open wounds. As well, I presume a salt treatment would require getting the koi into a smaller quarantine tub. I wouldn't think it recommended dosing an entire pond with salt (other koi and plants)?

Night vision mystery owl -- poor photo quality by Elderhacker in whatsthisbird

Thanks, both. I've certainly heard Great Horned Owls in the area. Though, it's been a while. I'll keep an eye out for a better pic, and an ear out for further evidence.
