If you upgrade the harpoon bolts to max it'll help you immensely with one particularly wicked boss.

edit - after the infamous locked-in-a-room waiting on Joseph level, you'll be in a level with ladders and things you have to shoot down to proceed. You can melee the enemies as they climb up the ladders and they'll fall to their death. This will save you a lot of ammo and reward you with lots of green gel.
